It is bad enough that third world countries experience retaliation when it comes to expressing their opinions
not excluding capital punishment. Is this still a free country??? When I arrived in this country many years ago
I was totally jazzed how everyone could express their opinion freely. What the heck is happening????

It's simple...
no politics.
The country is free...
this forum is not.
Why?
Quote from: Zaster on March 20, 2009, 08:44:51 PM
Why?
Because the seven people that started this forum say so.

If We all came over to your house, which you gave us the key for, stocked the fridge, said we could have a party anytime and started trashing the place and treating all your friends like douche bags, would you lock the doors and tell us all to go home once in awhile so other friends with a better appreciation for what you have provided FREE could relax and enjoy without fighting and other bullcrap? It would still be a free country but not at your house? Same thing...........get used to it. And just say "thank you" once in awhile. [thumbsup]

Were not going to agree on this.
We tried a politics board.
It degenerated into a place where little was expressed besides religious and ethnic hate veiled in political discussion.
The board guidelines are specific about the discussion of politics, and where that would be allowed. You have read them right? http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=107.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=107.0)
We no longer have a politics board..or political/religious discussion.
I'd love to hear your opinions on anything else.

along even if they have different opinions....what's wrong with that picture

The temptation to say things that would get this thread locked is almost overwhelming.
In other news, life isn't fair.

You asked Nate what was wrong with the 'picture' of people getting along even if they have different opinions.
The proven fact is, that folks here cant do that.
Indeed that's *wrong*.
When you figure out how to keep that from happening, let us know.
:)
zaster,...........
dude, maybe you should just lock this thread.
they're teaching tolerance.
how to express your opinion without offending anyone.
or there's no opinion to express.
this board is so much more fun when we all get along.
Reading line after line of name calling is no fun.

Actually, I think this is completely wrong. They aren't 'teaching' anything and, truth be told, they are promoting intolerance by their actions. People disagreeing, and vehemently so, is not "wrong" or "bad". It is a natural course of events.
The very idea that one
must express their opinion in such a manner which does not offend anyone is the height of political correctness, which leads to intolerance. In large part, it is the opinion itself which offends, not the mode of conveyance.
All that said, I agree that the owners (yes, they own it) of this board have the right to dictate what goes on here. Like it, or lump it...your choice.
How many times do we have to go over this.
It's not about offending or not offending anyone.
It's about us not wanting this motorcycle forum dragged down by people being assholes.
People are assholes about a few distinct topics. And communication online is very different than in person...forums can very quickly be overrun by a very small number of people having their own little pissing matches all over the place.
Fun motorcyclists whose company we enjoy leave when the forum is nothing but the active typists being jerks.
It's easier for us to get rid of one topic than to write to five assholes.
I'd rather have 1,000 members who actually want to talk about bikes than 5,000 who want to talk politics. Plenty of political forums out there.
I for one get annoyed when I open a thread and it's a lengthy diatribe about whichever political view the poster wants to rant about.
This is a motorcycle forum. Express any opinion you want about motorcycles, motorcycling, and or motorcycle racing and you'll get free discussion and an open, non-locked thread.
Discussion of political topics can be handled by a majority of the members here over a cold beer after a days ride, but the nature of the Internet and the limited nature of written Internet Forum communication makes the discussion of such complicated and emotionally charged topics incapable of being accurately represented or considered so the threads degenerate if you let them go.
Sorry, but I'm with the Flounders on this one. Thank you gentlemen for keeping the house civil.

a big problem with the natural course of events or "letting
adults work it out" is that there are always a few who will eventually take it too far...which in turn leads to threats, which leads to more threats, which can actually lead to litigation.
this happened on TOB, and i have no doubt that it would eventually happen here if (http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm285/s2r1000/FlounderIcon.jpg?t=1237649053)
did not set a limit on certain discussions.
And this is exactly why I locked my own "What's Going ON" thread. It was starting to change into a discussion on why we don't have a politics forum and that was not my intent. Does anyone else feel the need to call me out on this through my personal Email instead of a PM?
zaster... I think we need to go get a beer some time this week.. I know why u started this thread and doesn't have to do with politics.. I simply thank u for standing up and saying something. I understand why most threads are locked. We had a little debate in our own state thread and it got locked that's why he chimmed in.. Just wanted to say my 2 cents..
M
Statler very well said..
most of the local forums fly under the radar most of the time.
That's why there's stuff there that wouldn't be cool on the main boards and then suddenly something gets locked after lots of stuff that would have gotten it locked just went unseen. Which makes it look like some outrageous stuff is ok but then something silly gets it locked. Not realy how it happens....and I think people like that there aren't dozens of moderators looking around for stuff to be wrong.
Luckily it's now Spring so much of it will be moot as folks will be riding.
Realy wasn't a bad winter for us considering the growth and number of active members.
I have two kids so I'm just going to stick with "Because I said so" ;D
Seriously, every other forum I visit on the internet is awash with politics, opinions, arguments, name-calling, threats and hateraid.
Think of this place as somewhere where you can take a break from that.
And if I want to talk politics I can always go to every other place in the internet.

Call it "pc" or whatever, man, there's nothing wrong with basic civility. If the Flounders didn't keep this place civil, a lot of us wouldn't want to be here.

Just to be clear...
We allow topics that directly pertain to moto issues that are political in nature. They usually include legislation of some sort which is what makes them political.
We hope, and probably foolishly so, that the membership will deal with these topics in a non adversarial manner.
Everything else that is remotely political is off limits.

Well said.
I've actually experienced that and watched a strong solid online community completely fall apart and end up closing because so much animosity and division had happened. People took sides, took stuff personal, and soon even the RL part of the group end up falling apart.
As said, interweb is full of places to argue politics-religion-economics. Let's just ride.

Well, this thread proves to me that people can get along...even though there are a few folks that are in the business of trying to stoke the fire and help or seem to be proud of getting threads locked.
Not to blow sugar up anyone's behind, I'm especially proud of the way the moderators handled themselves.
In retrospect...if people would take a moment to try to decipher a poster's true intentions instead of coming out with blazing guns we would have way less conflicts to begin with. [thumbsup]
