So about 6 months ago, when I'm parting out my 999 bike, a guy in Canada buys the frame from me. Wants me to ship it to a USPS office in USA, so he won't have to pay duties on it. Whatever, I'll ship it wherever he wants as long as I've gotten paid. What he does with it or where he lives isn't my concern.
Anyway, I overnight him the title, then get the frame boxed up and sent out. Of course, the USPS office rejects the delivery, and it comes back to me.
This was DECEMBER 08.
I've emailed him about a dozen times, no response. I would think someone would want a 1200 frame they paid for, but alas he is non-responsive.
How long do I have to keep this thing before I go ahead and turn it into a track whore bike? Title is signed over and gone, and I don't want to do anything illegal with it either. But I'm not sure how long I need to "hold" it before I do whatever.
Thoughts?

My first thought is the title alone was worth the $1200.
Do the 'math'.
12/08? I'd give it a couple of months more, making a total of 6. No good logical reason, just feels right ;D
put the money in a savings account (or whatever) for 6 months, in case he gets in touch.
and do whatever you want with the frame.

He didn't care about the frame, he just wanted a clean title...

If you have a 'warm' 999...
and can cool it off for a $1200 piece of paper...
why bother with the actual part?
and Chris beat me to it

Aaah, I get it. (Need a lightbulb smiley ;D)
Shit, do whatever you want with the frame then.
crazy canucks.
I think I'm the slow one today. Can someone explain how that works?
How do you reconcile that the VIN on the frame of the 'warm' bike doesn't match the VIN on the title?
This is why I ask, if I have a perfectly good (rebuilt) monster with a salvage title. And, I buy a totaled monster with a broken frame from craigslist BUT with a clear title. How can I use that clear title on the good frame?
more than likely he's had a fake vin plate made or the vin matching the title etched into the frame. either would probably work... What he probably did was report that he bought the bike he has now (with your vin) for $1200 so he could register it on the cheap and have the appearance of being legal... his bike is actually probably stolen... just a guess as to why he wont get back to you. but as suggested.. I'd keep any documentation you have on it... sit on the money if you can, and hold tight for a little while just incase everything hits the fan. OR... maybe one of our beady eyed floppy headed brothers from the frozen tundra can offer insight to the registration process up there.
hey wait... do you still have the radial brembos from up front and the front m/c?

The VIN is on the head tube. The head tube goes bye bye and is replaced by a new one. New, fake VIN is stamped on the headtube. Bike is sold for 8-10K with a cost to the thief of $2,000 or so. The $1,200 was probably stolen from someone as well.
Hey Taf
There are quiet a lot of Canadians on this board. If the dude is in or near Toronto, I would try and help you find the guy. If he is in Quebec, he's on his own. Hahahaha
Lojack
honestly I really don't care. I WON'T resell a non-paperwork frame that I suspect is being used north of the border. Then again, I could probably just apply for a title....I doubt the GA DOT talks with floppy heads.
JOKING!
Guess I toss it in the attic until I forget about it. Sometime in the distant future I'll find it again and make a track whore from it. [laugh]
I hate the fact that I feel I've indirectly contributed to some scum-bags theiving scam. I've sold about a dozen frames since I've been into motorcycling.....never had or suspected an issue like this.

Glad to hear your joking;
yep! this sounds fishy! .... you could / should go one step further and report his name and Vin to "Transport Canada" and the Canadian "RIV" program (importing vin registrar); this is exactally what they are trying to stop you will be doing the whole bike community an favor and someone may get there stolen 999 back ... if one was ripped off others probably have too .... or if they were trying to "wash" a title then the unsuspecting new owner should be notified through these programs also ... just say-in .... if you need the references let me know and Ill post. [moto]
can you check to see if the paper work has been registered or transfered into the new owners name?
I Know a guy who sold a 1098S to a guy in TX. They guy paid and said he'd contact about shipping the bike. That was almost a year ago... what do you do about that!!!

Maybe something hapened to the dude, such as being arrested. He might have had bigger worries than the bike. Unfortunate things can go down in a hurry. Or maybe the bike was paid for with drug money or stolen funds and he was caught before he could take the bike. Not just in the above situation, but in TAftonomos's as well
someones lurking, or has a buddy or something.
I was emailed an address this AM, asking to kindly ship the frame. Large ass box exit stage left [thumbsup]
