Title: Healthy Snacks
Post by: He Man on April 09, 2009, 12:46:54 PM
What do you guys eat as helathy big snacks/ small meals that arent loaded with garbage? Something thats filling, low fat, under 800 calories, and low sugar?

on my list so far..

1) can of tuna, tsp of olive oil, loads of ms dash, and a handful of crushed crackers.
2) Whole grain penne/shells/etc with 1tsp of olive oil 1tsp of peanut oil, 5-6 pieces of shrimp, salt pepper, garlic and green onions.
3) smoked salmon on those whole grain breads with nuts and stuff inside them, crushed almonds spread ontop with a some butter.

Stuff gets old. need more ideas! Been realizing if i eat dinner at normal 6-7pm, im starving by 3am. and i cant sleep. need a snack in between.

ice chips.  :P   jk.

I just made the best thing ever. No idea how many calories. Regulate with ingredient amounts:

*Frozen mixed berries.
*protein powder (I like chocolate, you can get the lose weight kind, or the gain weight kind)
*a little peanut butter
*ice
*soy milk / fruit juice.
*banana

blend  - very filling, very energizing, very healthy
I use a submersible hand held blender. cleans up in 1 minute.

PS. Part of loosing weight/getting in shape is feeling hungry, weak etc. We get trained to over fill sometimes. That feeling of 'omg I'm going to burst' from over eating has become the norm.
It's good to just feel hungry. It's not damaging. It resets our caloric intake clock. It doesn't last long. After a while you don't get as hungry feeling.

One other thing I can't recommend enough:

Veggie Juicer!!!

Talk about massive vitamins/energy/ healthy X1000 without the calories/fat/bad carbs. DING!
Carrot juice - fresh pressed - gives me more energy than coffee without the crash after.
If you're eating less and feeling weak and tired from it. Bingo.

You can get really crazy with recipes: There are lots of books on it.

*Carrots, apples, + a stone fruit, peach or what-ev  (dessert)

*Carrots, beats, celery, TABASCO - (lunch - serious yum. )

*Carrots, radishes, fennel, cabbage. (May be negative caloric intake)

There are certain combinations that actually produce a negative calorie intake because they require more calories to digest than you get from them. Cabbage is one. However, you are getting massive nutrients this way. More so than you would from chewing up these same foods. Chewing is only 25% efficient in breaking the cell walls of veggies releasing the nutrients inside. Jiucers get more like 85% efficiency. Hence, more nutrients per pound juicing. You get all the energy, health, not the calories.

If you want to get crazy, then take all the carrot mash from the juicer and make a soup or carrot bread.

PS Get a juicer that's easy to clean. You'll use it way more often. One that doesn't have a bunch of nooks and crannies that you can't get to.
I highly recommend taking a couple displays apart in a store and seeing how quick it is to assemble/clean etc.

For late night, I would suggest staying away from complex carbs and stick more with high protein foods.  A little fat is ok too as long as it isn't covered with carbs.  Your body produces HGH when blood sugar is low during sleep.

Fat and protein before bed.  Simple carbs in afternoon and evening.  Complex carbs early morning and lunch.

Fish, fish, fish, and more fish.  I can't say it enough.  Too bad eating healthy is damn expensive (luckily I work at a seafood type of restaurant and get cheap shrimp, tuna, salmon, and scallops).

Lowfat cottage cheese is great because of the long lasting casein protein.

Lowfat yogurt is always good, just watch the carbs because some yogurt is loaded with surgar and don't eat it before bed.

I know you said tuna, but you can also get canned salmon.  I suggest the gourmet cut, not the premium cut.  It cost more but it is worth it and beats the hell out of tuna.

Just found this, good info:  http://www.shapefit.com/late-night-snacking.html. (http://www.shapefit.com/late-night-snacking.html.)

I'm by no means in shape, but when I do really stick to things like this, I can pack on the muscle and lose the fat quickly.  It's just all those late nights of drinking that kill me.

Excellent choice!  Mandarins are also very similar in size, ease of peeling & taste, but a bit more tart.

See, now that kind of talk is why your comments about eating babies was not well received in the past  ;)
I'll let you know if I don't like it when it comes out....hahaha..not that entertaining that thought is in the faintest corner of my mind especially after that scary April Fools scheme.

Depends...how many calories are we talking about per oz?

Tequila is actually one of the worst I think - it has the most carbs. Hence, they make a sugar sub. out of the same plant.
Unless, of course, we are talking "mentally" healthy snack...then by all means, tequila FTW.

The mercury thing isn't proven.  More of a myth.  Me thinks you'd have to eat a truckload a day.

As far as protein being bad.........yes, it can be.  Too much and bad things can happen, but, again, you'd have to eat a lot.  If protein makes up most of your caloric intake, that's when your kidneys have to work harder to remove the ketones that this creates.  And essentially, you get dehydrated.  Fluids are very important.

It is important to use what you take in.  If you work out a lot, then you need more protein to help repair muscles.  A lot of people think you can just eat protein and gain muscle without increasing your exercises, which is very much a myth.  Also, you don't want to eat more than 30 to 40g of protein at a time and, other than late night, you want some carbs to help with the insulin response associated with getting proteins to the muscles.  That's why I recommended eating carbs early in the day and protein for a snack late at night.  And as always, drink plenty of water.

If there's a Trader Joe's near you, their mediterranean hummus and flatbread are delicious.  I slice some feta on the side and chow down.

That's all I got.  Alot of the stuff I snack on is terrible for you.  I just polished off a bacon and velveeta sandwich.

i found the best snack....its called work on your bike. I've literally forgotten to eat lunch for the past 2 days.

and as far as the mercury myth.... well has anyone actually tried to prove it? Lol, it sounds plausible but far fetched if you really think about it.

Ummm, what does most of the Japanese's diet consist of? Fish. I think mercury toxicity is one of those "it could happen". Yes, fish eat things that could be tainted with mercury, but how much varies widely...

Title: Re: Healthy Snacks
Post by: Holden on April 12, 2009, 02:41:28 PM
There is measurable mercury in [probably most] food fish, so the question is simply whether or not it will harm you if you don't eat a whole ton of it.

But there are other toxins aside from mercury—no idea what health problems they may or may not contribute to.

Fixed for you.

BTW, if you want omega-3 EFAs without the risk of mercury, there are vegetarian sources including flax seed and walnuts.

My parents didn't believe me when I told them that until they went to the doctor and were both told they were dehydrated.

As for the mercury fish thing, it is true that fish contains mercury, with oysters being the most dangerous to eat raw because they filter the shitty water. But the FDA only warns young/old people and pregnant/nursing mothers to restrict their fish intake.

Just start training for bicycle racing- you'll be lucky if you can eat enough during base season.

The easiest rule to follow is to eat things that are relatively unprocessed and tampered with (whole grain bread compared to white bread, as an example).  Just burn what you take in, and take in what you will burn.  Of course, different things burn differently, which is where the glycemic index comes in.  If you're breaking something down, make sure you take in the appropriate materials to repair and recover as quickly as possible.  I'm no nutritionist, however, and I'm lucky enough to not have to adhere too strictly to some of that adivce (yet).

I really like Metabolic Drive protein from Biotest in Colorado Springs.  For a chocolate fix, I take 1 pack of organic instant oats, 1 scoop chocolate protein and 1/2 pack of sugarfree/fat free pudding.  mix it all up with cold water.  its like a no bake cookie.

love frozen grapes too

oh and organic peanut butter (no sugar and crap added), and low carb tortillas.  yum
