Title: Electrical - 96 M900 - Obscene screeching buzz & no juice - FIXED!!!!!
Post by: dropstharockalot on May 03, 2009, 10:40:30 AM
Multi-part question.

1) What the hell is this thing?

Same part, removed from it's rubber frame mount... the pale brown plastic cover sez: "Type 23  /  B 047   / 12V.40A"

Once the cover is removed, the coiled wires, springs, and little contact arm are exposed - but not so clear in this crappy pic:

2) Why is it emitting an awful, high-pitched buzzing sound whenever I flip the key to "on"?

3) Is that awful, high-pitched buzzing sound the reason that none of my lights or indicators function, and my start button is not starting the bike?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

To show my appreciation, please enjoy this image:

It is the main relay, and yes it is the reason nothing works. ;D

I think there may be some replacement info in the sticky thread at the top of the page.

When you turn ign on, you see how it works now w/o the hood.
The little copper thingy should connect/not connect.
Simply adjust that and wetsand just a little & clean the mating surfaces and it should work again.

The "Cheap Replacement Parts" thread?

mine did that (made the high pitch buzzing) when I had dirty contacts on the battery cables. I'm guessing that resistance in the leads ment that there wasn't enough pull to make the relay work properly?

anyhow, cleaned the battery leads  (after checking relay) and all good....

Quote2) Why is it emitting an awful, high-pitched buzzing sound whenever I flip the key to "on"?

Because contact is bad.

Try my little recipe, simple & funtional.
Done it on at least 5 bikes by now.

Main thing is to adjust so it clearly connects-disconnects when you turn on ignition.

I'm trying to work the main relay free from the connector, but it doesn't want to come free - am I missing a toggle or connector or latch or something, or is it just wedged in there pretty good?

///doesn't wanna apply leverage and have the thing detonate into a bazillion pieces...

Thx again.

Put the cover back on the relay, so you can grab it without tweaking things.

Then hold the connector body and wiggle/pull on the relay.

Sounds like the terminals may be corroded, likely part or all of your problem.

Maybe my English is too limited, I`m talking about connection inside here:

The flat copper thingy w a round spot that makes contact w the spool of copper.
Make sure it connects/disconnects as it should.

I think what Speeddog was saying is the fact that the connector won't come apart is an indication of a corroded connection which may prevent the relay from receiving enough voltage to work properly.

Yeah, that's what I meant.

Once the relay's disconnected, you can test it, no need to futz with the innards of it if it's working.

Quoteif it's working.

That`s the key.
The buzzing indicates it`s not.

greenmonster, thanks for clarifying.  I thought that was what you meant, but I wasn't sure.

Last night I pulled the relay from the connector harness.  I took a fine sandpaper and sanded the connection greenmonster was talking about until it shined - there had been some dark deposits there, but I can't say if it was enough to prevent contact.  To be thorough, I also sanded all the prongs that connect the relay to the harness.  Plugged it all back together -

same buzz, no juice.

Soooooo.... I went here next:

I've got the battery out and on the trickle... I should have it in the green by tonight after work.  The + connector screw had some corrosion on the top of the screw itself, but not on the part of the screw that connected to the lead or the lead itself.  I've got the corrosion worked off the screw, so I'm just waiting on the battery to charge.

Stay tuned...

And w that done and the hood off, the relay clearly shuts on & off when ign is turned on-off?

I believe so.  The arm visibly moves into contact when the ignition key is turned to "on," and back when it is turned to "off."

Update - It's up and running!  My neighbors are probably furious that I had to test it at 10PM local, but they can always move...

A day on the trickle seems to have done the trick.  When I picked the battery up and returned it to the bike, it was audibly bubbling.  It wasn't doing that before I placed it on the charger, so I'll guess that low spark was causing my relay to not close.  Looks like I'll be springing for a new batt if I don't want to ride in fear all summer... probably money well spent.

Thanks to all for the helpful advice.  Bacon for everyone.  Or beers if I run across you at the MotoGP.

good to hear!  :)
I think you probably dont need a new battery, just keep ALL contacts clean, your bike'll love ya!
