Two weeks ago my oil sending unit went bad. So i installed a mechanical oil pressure guage. I was in a bit of a hurry so as a "quick fix" i zip tied it to the oil cooler line.

Since then i've been trying to find a permanent home for it. So today i started making a billet housing to mount it in.

This is what i have in mind.

I'll paint it black when it's finished. That will help it blend into the stock cluster somewhat. And i'm going to run the oil line and wiring through a grommet on the underside.
I'm thinking it looks a little bulky but reserving final judgement for now.
Tell me what you think.
Howard
It's not enormous, so go for it! Also, leave it billet IMO.
I say leave it down where it was - looks Italian, just kind of placed wherever they had an extra hole. A "to hell with the ergonomics as long as it works (maybe) AND looks fine" attitude that has been the Italian design trademark. On top of the cluster looks overcautious IMO.
I wouldn't say I have a great eye for these sorts of things, but, IMO I like where it is. Looks more hooliganish. Maybe mount it a little more securely, but if it's not in the way... Why not leave it?
I'm liking it where it was originally - very road warrior! [thumbsup]
Nice work on the housing, though.
+1 on the original location...it looks alittle clustered up by the main instruments.
i think it looks freakin sweet down in the original location also.
[thumbsup] on the billet though
mount it on the right side of the gauge cluster. it's too high up coming right off the top of the cluster. The "original" location (though very unique) makes it too vulnerable to a simple knock over and is not entirely intuitive to look at; you may not notice until it's too late. when you look at the bike from the side it shouldn't scream, "hey look, I've got this gauge that nobody else thought of!" just my $.014 of course- I think it's a brilliant idea though.
I really like where it is now.
There are two reasons i want to move it.
1, The oil light coming on all the time got me paranoid, whitch leads to.
2, I can't see the guage at all while rideing unless i lean to the right and look down.
Not a good thing to be doing in traffic. At least up top i would be able to see it at a glance.
Also there's the line and wiring to hide along with the underside of the guage being exposed.

I'll look at that tomorrow, might just be the ticket. [thumbsup]
I dont care where you put it, Im just envious of your mad billet machining skillz!!!
Given you have a mill/lathe -- why make an "add on" to the stock cluster? (which in my opinion is dead ugly)
Toss the idiot lights and go to small LED's instead. Machine a new aluminum housing with the speedo on left and the oil pressure on the right. If you get adventurous, you can make the left/right match and then add a LED tach via LED's around the ouside of the oil pressure gauge itself. (Bill / TurboMonster.com did one for his boost gauge like this)

Look at the second pic from the top of my original post. See the brass adapter that screws into the engine case? I made that too. ;D Literally took 15 minutes start to finish.

I wanted to cut my down time as much as possible, the add on was quick and simple.
I like your idea though and will more than likely go that route sometime in the future.
Billet works for me,i do like the original place for it though.IMO
one piece handlebar clamp w/a pocket for the gauge. [thumbsup]
Maybe it is just me, but an oil pressure gauge needs to be where it is in your view normal scan while riding unless supplemented with a warning light. Great machine work, Howard!
Keep it Billet, put it where YOU want it and where it will serve you the best. Nice work! [thumbsup]
I agree with C_rex, it0ll probably look best mounted to the side of the cluster... And that way you still have a lot of visibility...
Sweet work Howard !!! Brilliant once again. The only thing I would be worried about is the cappliary line rupturing running that far. If you trust it then I trust you [thumbsup] :L
Thanks for the compliments and input guys! [thumbsup]
I looked at it agian this morning. It looks like the right side for now. I'll have to mill the base down some, but that's a no brainer. Also will need to relocate the front turn signal indicators. I was going to do that anyway, so now i have a reason to get to it. ;)
Howard
The billet looks good.
+1 on right side [thumbsup]
Hooligan Machinist indeed!!!! :o [thumbsup] Great work!
Could tell me what guage that is and what fiting your using at the case? - Chris

No problem.
The guage is a 2inch 0 to 100psi SUNPRO. Part # CP8216 on thier website, i bought mine at autozone.
The adapter is sold separately also on the website. It's male end is M10 X 1.25 and the female end is 1/8 x 27 npt. Also has a 3/16" (.1875) hole thru.
I'd worry about that long nylon tubing busting open. :-\
Step 1, turn signal relocation completed.

Step 2 , guage housing finished and assembled onto cluster.

Sorry for doing this in multiple posts. Couldn't get it to work all in one. :-\
great mod ..looks amazing
how bout useing copper line instead of the nylon
the reason i say this i had a 70 Biscayne with a 400 (ex interceptor) had a plastic oil line ...yup it blew ..seized the motor after that all my oil lines are copper
Hey Nigel,
Good to see you here. You still sporting those pegs i made for you?
The pics you sent were awesome! Sweet ride. [thumbsup]
Sweet install Howard, I really dig that. You missed some hooligan stuff, man. I managed to grind one of the pegs you made me at the track. I have mixed emotions about it cause I actually touched one down [thumbsup], but it beat it up a little [bang]
Good thing I still have an extra pair, huh ?
Howard as usual nice work [thumbsup]
Looks store bought [thumbsup] Great job!!
see, now that looks good. it actually looks great.
dude...u got skillz
[thumbsup]
you better belive it
i get so many compliments on them ..................your new mod is very cool
Nice job [thumbsup]
Very well done, looks oem [thumbsup]
+1 on the complements! [thumbsup] Great work - chris
I finished up the install.
Found some braided stainless hose cover left over from an old dress up kit. I thought it would add an extra layer of protection to the oil line.

I agree, making a solid one piece clamp top with mount for the gauge would look really good.
It doesn't match up well enough to be placed up there.
Great fab skills though [thumbsup]
I'd zip tie it up where you can see it. ;D

I disagree, very little matches up on Monsters, naked and a bit untidy - so the out-of-place gauge actually looks right (to me, anyway). I especially like that it's so long. IMO the only thing that might make it better would be to paint the bottom/front part black.
Amazingness [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup]
I wish I anywhere near the fab skills that you have...
It looks incredibly good, the only thing that I would do is paint the holder black to match the cluster.
[thumbsup]

yay! I am not alone in my weirdness! ;D
This gauge requires a connection to the oil system, not a good idea to have a oil pressure line up to the instruments.
How did these pics get above our comments? hmm conspiracy
I like it on the side better, it opens up the vision in front of you.
But it wouldn't matter where it was put. Great job [thumbsup]
