Title: Proud step-papa
Post by: Grampa on May 20, 2008, 11:18:21 AM
Michelle's son Ethan competed with a team of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders last weekend at the Bakersfield City School District's Academic Pentathalon.  For those of you who are familiar with the Academic Decathalon, it's like that only for 4th - 8th graders instead of high schoolers and only five subjects are tested instead of ten.  For those of you who aren't familiar with either, Academic Pentathalon is a competition at the individual level for students who take tests in Literature, math, and science (and an essay for 6th graders).  As a team, each grade also competes in a Super Quiz (kind of like Jeopardy and the questions are all from each grade's social studies curriculum).  The individual testing was done this past week and today was the Super Quiz.

As a 4th grader, this was his first experience with Academic Pentathalon, but I have to say . . . he rocked!  He came home with 2 individual and 2 team awards.  He was awarded a silver medal for his score on the individual science test, he earned a silver in the overall category (a combination of his literature, math, and science test scores), his team earned a silver medal for the Super Quiz, and the 4th grade team won a gold medal for overall performance by all of the students (there were a bunch of individual awards for the 4th graders in addition to Ethans').  It was a lot of fun to watch the competition (even if I learned that I am NOT smarter than a 4th grader, nevermind a 5th grader!) and each of the 5th and 6th grade teams from Ethan's school also won medals for their Super Quiz performances and several individual medals.

I snapped I picture of it, as I left for work this morning. Michelle tells me that I was taking it from a bad angle, and that she had better shots of it she can give me, and of course I say.... I know what I'm doing. I had my phone camera set on a low resolution, and it came out tiny.... much like my brain  [cheeky]

a side note.

the other day, some of the kids at school, were teasing Ethan because of the shorts he had on. I don't really remember what the other kids issue was with them, but they kept say'n they were "girl" shorts.

Michelle told him that his response to them should  be a simple... "ok"

My advice didnt go over well.

I suggested he just say..... "ya, yer sister left them over at my place last night"

Um, they are a type of woman's apparel that is sort of a cross between shorts and a skirt. I believe the last time they had any real popularity was the early 90s. Should I be embarrassed or something?   ???

The real question is why you wimminz have a pair of panties but just a bra. Now THAT is perplexing.

Sorry. I was having a tussle with my bustle and a spat with my spats. You see, there was a nick in my knickers caused by a gator in my gators.

And for the on topic portion of this post: Joel, use this thread to enhance Ethan's vocabulary as it pertains to out dated clothing. That will make him smarter and keep him from getting teased . . .er . . .nevermind, teach him to throw a solid up cut. Kids on the playground never suspect it.

I wasn't trying to teach him to be sarcastic -- that time.  I think "ok" is a very simple and easy way to shut someone up when they're baggin' on you.
