Michelle's son Ethan competed with a team of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders last weekend at the Bakersfield City School District's Academic Pentathalon.  For those of you who are familiar with the Academic Decathalon, it's like that only for 4th - 8th graders instead of high schoolers and only five subjects are tested instead of ten.  For those of you who aren't familiar with either, Academic Pentathalon is a competition at the individual level for students who take tests in Literature, math, and science (and an essay for 6th graders).  As a team, each grade also competes in a Super Quiz (kind of like Jeopardy and the questions are all from each grade's social studies curriculum).  The individual testing was done this past week and today was the Super Quiz.

As a 4th grader, this was his first experience with Academic Pentathalon, but I have to say . . . he rocked!  He came home with 2 individual and 2 team awards.  He was awarded a silver medal for his score on the individual science test, he earned a silver in the overall category (a combination of his literature, math, and science test scores), his team earned a silver medal for the Super Quiz, and the 4th grade team won a gold medal for overall performance by all of the students (there were a bunch of individual awards for the 4th graders in addition to Ethans').  It was a lot of fun to watch the competition (even if I learned that I am NOT smarter than a 4th grader, nevermind a 5th grader!) and each of the 5th and 6th grade teams from Ethan's school also won medals for their Super Quiz performances and several individual medals.
