Title: If you had to describe yourself as a Japan-bike person, which would you choose?
Post by: Duck-Stew on May 21, 2008, 10:25:08 AM
If the Japanese had NO other competition in the world.....what would you choose?  Or, which manufacturer makes a product you most closely 'relate' to?!?

Oh, and I'm just curious....  There's no hidden marketing BS here.

I say Honda, just always had good luck with them.

After my recent experience with my 2008 Kawasucki KLR650 I would never recommend that manufacturer to anyone.

I've done well with Suzukis over the years.  TS185, GS650, GSF600, GSXR600, GS1150 ~

I wanted to vote but I really don't identify with any brand... I'm pretty brand neutral.

I buy whatever has a good review and is being sold for cheap :D

Although I almost bought a 636 so maybe I should go with that option.. although I like the look of the Honda CBR

I'm a big Honda fan. But please bring back the sporty V4's!  The current VFR doesn't appeal 1/2 as much as the old ones did.

I'm a suzuki dude.  I started with a T500 (a real piece of crap but I loved it).  Later a GS450, SV650, and DR 650.  They make
some butt ugly sport bikes; but then I'm not buying the whole line.

I guess Yamaha.  The FZ-1 seems like a pretty fun, while still practical, moto.

Plus, then I could cheer for Rossi.  ;D

I have family who work for Yamaha, and I've enjoyed the R6 and R1 for some time now.  And of course, they have Rossi, Edwards, Jorge, Dimples, the Bostroms, Nori, etc.

Oh I think there IS a hidden agenda here. You are trying to get us talk about motorcycles in the NO MOTO CONTENT section. That way you can ban us  all and have more room for ad space. Well I see through your cunning plan. I will not participate in this talking-about-motorcycles nonsense! Now if you will excuse me I have a picture of a kitten in a silly pose I must create a caption for.

Motorcycles indeed! GOOD DAY, SIR!

Honda VFR's with the V-4 engine and geardrive camshafts and carb'd -- glorious sound and torque like an electric motor.  I'd still build my own trellis-framed chassis and bodywork though!

Serious answer: have very little experience w/ japanese bikes. But the brand Honda says "bullet proof" to me. Also I get wood whenever I ride Grio's GB. 500cc and one cylinder = fun!

Back in 1999, I was chosing between the R1 and the 996.  I ended up buying the Yahmaha because I didn't want to go in debt for the Ducati.

I started on a '96 Suzuki Bandit 600 because it was cheap an available.  After two years on that I traded up to my '99 TL1000R.

I was looking at SV650's when I wanted a street bike after making the TL track only but bought my S2R instead.   [evil]

The blue and white Suzuki racing color schemes are gorgeous (except for in 2000) and I like the styling of the GSXR's, particularly the 2006-2007 GSXR 600/750 with the stubby exhaust.

A great big capital YUP!!! The CBR is technically better than my old 98 m750 but it can't touch the cool factor of the Duc with a stick.

Do tell.  I thought the KLR's were 'bulletproof'.

You would think, after all a 20 year old engine design should be pretty rock solid (with the exception of the doohickey).  Besides the body work, the 2008 model had a few engine changes.  Most notably was thinner piston rings with less tension and a new bore.  The new bore was found to be a mirror finish by many mechanics and combined with the thinner tension oil rings allowed for oil to pass the rings and glaze the cylinder.  At least that is the speculation.

The meat and potatoes is my bike began burning oil during my 3500 mile road trip from Vegas to Banff National Park in Canada.  By the time the bike had 5k miles it was sucking down over a quart of oil every 400 miles.  Kawasucki rebuilt the bike under warranty and gave it back to me in worse condition.  It started drinking a quart every 350 miles (I discovered this in Death Valley).  This time apparently my valve guides were out of spec.  Needless to say the bike just passed its 1-year mark and has been rebuilt twice and in the shop half a dozen times for a total of over 15 weeks down due to the various repairs.  The worst part is its not just my bike, take a trip over to klr650.net and check out the oil consumption threads if you are curious.  Such a shame, the bike is fun and one of the only like it in its class.

V-4s are my second favorite engine. Had an NC24 for a while, that was a fun machine. I'd still consider picking up a an old Interceptor for a daily rider (there is a Rothmans replica 750 for sale just north of Montreal, yum yum). And of course the RC-51 is a pretty cool twin, even if it isn't a Ducati. Stomping power, decent looks, Honda engineering, cheap used prices, can't really go wrong with one of those.

i can't decide

i started on a sv, and have one now for the track...but as a brand (other models/racers/etc) meh.

For brand appeal, I've somehow always been drawn to yamaha.  The color scheme and looks of the r1/6 have always just moved me.  I like Rossi & Edwards and I'm gaining massive respect for Jorge lately.

Honda? meh...except for cafe'd out cb's & the rc51.

I've owned a lot of Hondas, but They all make good bikes. I might own a ZX600 pretty soon.
3 of My favorite bikes were Hondas though. The VFR with Gear driven Cams, The CR250 was pretty Boss, and the VTR 1000 I feel is highly underrated. This bike caused me to want real Ducati. Not some Highly reliable Bullet proof Japanese Knockoff of a Ducati. It made decent power and sounded awesome with those two brothers on. But Honda just ran the design into the ground by not updating it over it's ten year run. It was Fun though...

On the other hand I bought that CBR600F4 to go to the track with and Im kind of lukewarm about it. It's just a tool to go down the road on. Thats why I'm going to try this ZX600. Or it might just be inline 600's that don't do it for me I never rode one before this. I see getting some kind of twin for trackdays at some point.

I've always liked the big Zuka's my ol' GS1100e was a beast and I rode it like it was stolen everytime I got on it. THe engine always stayed strong even at 50k+ on the 25 year old aircooled engine. Unfortunately it became cost prohibitive when all the parts around the engine and tranny started wearing out, and hard to find.  :'( In a straight line I could roast newer "faster" bikes all day long. In the twisties though all that power and skinny tires, + poor suspension it looked like I was doing the Humpty-Dance on that thing.

I have only ever owned one Honda street bike. !983 750 Intercepter(Voted bike of the year). It had a recall on the cams. Lots of Honda dirt tho. I have owned plenty of Kawi's, Yami's & one Big Bore Suzi twin(The Suzuki/Davadison)

I think that they are all the same.
The 2006 Suzi M109R had a few things that needed to be taken care of. Leaky coolent hoses & fuel lines.
Inline 4s are inline fours. Different colors & different shapes.

A few other ppls mentioned the RC51  [thumbsup] [thumbsup] I almost bought one after I sold the 996 Bi-posta. I still like the RC51.
There is nothing wrong with "SOME" of the Jap bikes.
So,,,,,possibly A Kawi man. Yrs ago Yvon DuHammel raced for Kawi. I always cheered for the Green machines

I like the old CBs... I'd still love to have an old twin to cafe out...

my first bike was a GS500.

but for the modern crotch rocket (which is how I voted) yammie gets my click. ergonomically, it's the most comfy I've felt on any of the bikes.

that, and the RC51 feels like climbing on a cow... not how a v-twin sport bike should feel like [cheeky]

There's a local shop with an RC51 and I think I might go test ride it.  I've wanted one for a long time.

That's the only reason I voted for Honda.

that's my opinion is all.... the 999 is just so... compact... and lithe... in comparison.

And..... ugly.   :P

999,, I like them. 1098,,, I like them more. But probably just because of the "MORE" Hp.
RC51 feels like a cow,,,,,,,hmmm. Ya maybe compared to a 999 or 1098 or even some of those nimble 600's

Man I'd keep your 1K, it's nice. I like the 05 750s and the 06 1000s. The new ones are ugly and lose midrange for top end power...

thank you
that why i'm leaning more towards the honda cbr 1000rr "08
my friend has the red and sliver one
and it's light, fast, and quality build
but i might just wait for the 09 models
I'm hoping Suzuki will redeem itself for the past model
and the 06 suzuki 1000 are hard to find

If only japanese bikes existed, i'd have to modify them to something like.............
yamaha

If I was 23 years old I would own a Kawasaki ZX6R.. when I´m old I´ll own a Honda, until then everything else is game. I´ve had good experiences with Suzuki´s GSXR-750WX & L, Yamaha VMX1200C, Kawasaki ZZR250...

Anyone who thinks that *isn't* damn cool, or chock full of character, is not a motorcycle lover.

I miss my stolen R6 and voted Yamaha, but I'd be more likely to get a Honda CB cafe racer if I was to get another bike now...
