Post by: cyrus buelton on July 30, 2009, 06:50:15 AM
I am looking at a bike on ebay located in Long Beach.

For a case of a beer.......could someone in that area do me a huge favor?

(mods - if you feel this should be in local socal section instead, please move for me)

We should get a gang to go visit the bike and intimidate the seller.  ;D

If nobody else pipes up I can help you out. It's about 50mi away for me but I bet that's a lot closer than you are.  :P It's been a while since I've looked at buying a bike though so you'll have to remind me what to look for.  :P

Dude, 50mi is way to far to drive!!!!

I have no idea either. Just basics:

1. does it start right up, how does it idle, etc.
2. does it look as clean in the pics
3. any spots of leakage, etc

Check for signs of a drop. Have the guy ride it up and down the street. Listen for weird noises.

Cyrus is not from socal.

He like most of the US think 10 miles is a long  commute.

50 miles here is nothing, just getting around a mountain can be 30 or more.

No kidding. He must also be from one of those odd places where they compare commute times in distance or minutes instead of hours.  [laugh]

Seriously though, if you'd like be to drop by, I can. I don't think I'll ever be able to test ride it for you though. I doubt I could even put 1 foot on the ground while the bike is upright.  :P

Thanks very much for your help, guys.

Yeah, commute difference is a lot different for me.

Yes, I live in a million population city, but you guys live in a multi-million citizen city with a huge geographic area.

I live 1.5mi from work.............. ;D

How tall are you, erkishhorde?

I am 5' 7" and sat on a GS1200 with a lower seat and actually had more "foot" on the ground than on my S4r.

I PMed Hbliam and he works by Long Beach, so he is a very potential recipient of my gift.

Which, by the way, has been upgraded to a bottle of liquor. However, it has to be a "reasonably" priced bottle  [laugh]

I am going to test ride a GS1200 on Saturday and after that.........I will know if this is a bike within my size limitations.

Thank you everyone  [thumbsup]

Wanna buy mine?  ;D I'm considering selling after the brake bleed discovery (it's getting fixed Saturday). Already has a custom dished out seat.  ;)

I'm in   [thumbsup]

JJ had a clip that came loose which caused his rear brake to loose all the fluid.

He can tell you about the trainwreck it is to bleed the ABS system.

A co-worker said there are 13 bleed points on the system..............

I can't confirm or deny that claim.

Mine is an '05 which has servo-assisted ABS brakes...essentially power brakes. Depending upon who you talk to the servo assist is good or bad. BMW quit using servo assist on the '07 GS.I don't really mind it, other than it being unneeded complexity IMO.

Anyway, like Jud said, the steel line that feeds my rear brake circuit popped out of the ABS/servo unit and pissed brake fluid all over the ground. I rode home with only front brakes no biggie, pulled the tank (really easy) and found out that nothing had broke, the clip that holds the line into the ABS/servo unit had just come undone, presumably from not being installed correctly.

But now I need to bleed the rear brake circuit. 10 minutes on the Ducs. There are tubes and shit everywhere on this thing so I get onto advrider.com and find instructions. First thing is I need a special funnel with a threaded end and o-ring on it...this screws into the ABS/servo unit where you add fluid. $200 at a BMW shop, or I can order a couple things and make one for $30. After that the rear caliper is fairly simple. The rear brake pedal portion though requires 3 separate reservoirs on the ABS unit to be bled. WTF. So for the rear brake only I have to bleed 4 things...and build a new tool to do it.

At this point I was disgusted, and still am a little...so I'm thinking of selling it and waiting to see what Ducati comes out with, then deciding on that, a Tiger, or a Stelvio.

I know that after I have the tool this isn't that big of a deal...but it makes what should be a 10-20 minute job into more like a 2-3 hour job, which is lame IMO. The local BMW shop charges 3.5 hours to bleed the brakes, the local mechanic that I prefer charges 2.5 hours. Sucks, as this should be done yearly.

Anyway, not a huge deal...especially if someone doesn't work on their own bikes. Seems like BMW over-engineered the system to me though.  :-\

Oh yeah...I'd like $9K. 18K service, and final drive service just completed...entire bike given a good bill of health. BMW vario side panniers, and new Caribou top case. Brakes just flushed.  [roll] Custom dished out Rich's seat...so anyone over 5'-10" will need to invest in a Sargent or something.

Still not positive I'm going to sell it...but I'm thinking about it.
