QuoteThey heard shouts and screams from a neighboring house and found the suspected burglar suffering from a nearly severed hand and lacerations to his upper body, he said.
Now that is the old school version of protecting one's property!
Well...
I guess these things happen?
Hell yeah!! If someone was breaking into my house, and I had a sword, I would use it. Or I'd grab my pistol.

Guglielmi said it is legal to possess a sword in Baltimore, and "individuals have a right to defend their person and their property." But the police spokesman said he was not in a position to comment on whether it was appropriate to use a sword, baseball bat or other means of defense.

/\ Ha..
Yea I've got about 4 swords, for now, and will deff use them real quick...
Gotta stock up for when the zombies come.. cuz bullets run out quick..
Based on the initial investigation, the student killed the man with only one strike of the sword,
Damn..one slice?! That definitely MUST have been a Hattori Hanzo sword!
;D
If guy with the sword was trained to use the sword then I wouldn't be surprised. It doesn't take much to cut a person in half with a even a semi decent sword. The (semi?) severed hand was probably a defensive wound - he probably put it up to stop the sword.
Goza (bamboo mats) are used for practice. A single one is close to what would take to go through a person - this guy is cutting triple rolls:

LOL..doesn't take much to cut a person in half with a semi decent sword?! What Japanime cartoons are you watching?! Even at a midsection cut..you'd still have to go through the spine and/or maybe a rib or two. ;)
Ahh..can't wait to start up at my new Aikido dojo.
;D
It's all about the speed and technique. Ribs won't do much to stop a good cut.
good reminder....deadly force, even justified, will result in a stay in the slammer. Defending property, you have to consider the value. Defending life, I'll take some time in prison while they sort it out because I'm still alive and that's better than the alternative.
Big sticky legal mess when you kill someone and it's likely not over in terms of legal fees if the robber had family.
But he's alive. And his roommates are alive. [thumbsup]
people suck. own a giant breed dog. carry where legal. learn self defense and train hard. very hard. broken bones and bleeding hard. (my ribs still hurt when it rains; thank you, sensei).
My criminal defense attorney is in my phone contacts.

It's such a shame it comes to that, but it is the reality of the situation.
Hopefully the prosecutor will not pursue charges against the kid.
I wonder if the "intruder" had a weapon? It doesn't say that in the article.
I think chopping off the guys hand was enough, but don't know if he did that after the chest swing cut.
but again.......I'd fire til the clip was empty or heard a body hit the ground.
I like to think my 66lbs doberman would tear someone up, but I am not so sure.
as for the defense attorney in your phone.............I have mine as well. Always good to have a lawyer on stand by. My wife has the number too.
IIRC here in NY deadly force is not justifiable for defense of property.
Doesn't mean the make the beast with two backser wouldn't deserve it according to my rules. [evil]

'my rules' almost always different than law in most states. good to learn your local issues. and even then it takes a lot of money to take a life without major ramifications.
As far as I'm concerned, this should be pretty cut and dry.
When you skulk around stealing shit from folks, you're involving yourself in a high risk business. You want some of peoples' stuff without paying for it, and other people would like to keep the things that they own. If you get injured or killed while plying your trade, you shouldn't be surprised and it really isn't anyone's fault but your own. [coffee]

Except in Texas.

I'm amazed that he wasn't just blown away with both barrels which is the De rigueur burglar way of death in this country.
this is why my swords aren't that sharp, but my knives are very sharp. if my katana or samurai swords were properly sharp, they would have no issues going through a person far enough to kill quickly. that does not include stabbing. plus the weight of the words alone would injure the person even if they were completely blunted.
the knives however, i want them to slice quickly, i can't get enough force behind them to really sever anything without having the person incapacitated first. if you get a good cut on someone and they see the blood flow they will most likely go defensive and just try to get away. remember "there's no art in killing with the tip."
the "home defense axe" would prob split wood, but if i pulled that on someone it would be just to scare them.

Damn right. And that includes protecting your car, even if it's out on the street or driveway.

You should test it out - preferably on Kanye West. Let us know how well it works. ;D

I'm pretty sure it is the same in LA too. When I lived down in NOLA I remember hearing about a guy that blew away another dude trying to steal his car. The owner was on his porch, the thief was in the car on the street, and there was nothing wrong with what he did (legally)

took the concealed carry course in Louisiana recently. They said we could not shoot to protect property legally.
This story presents one of the best reasons I can think of NOT to live in Baltimore! The DA had not yet determined whether or not to press charges on the burglary victim? Really?

Wow guys defending with swords amaze me, mainly because I have no experience with them.
I would think it's much more "personal" defending yourself with a sword, you have to be close.
I'll stick with my 1911 and tactical training, remember don't look at the intruder, concentrate
on that front site. You'll never miss.

I've got of these too. A nice, hand made, two foot half moon balanced with a 7inch spike. I'm all about feeling it, shooting someone is too impersonal.

like this but with a broader head that is more rounded.
I know i put up a picture of it somewhere around here.
i like the idea of swinging it witht eh blade away and not having a puncture wound. either that or you could hold it in a wide grip and use the backside to bash.....
i think this is getting off topic here though.
Yeah we probably are but melee weapons are cool!!!
I'll try and get a pic of mine soon. Looks exactly like what Perrin carries in the WOT if you've read the series.
