That's what p*sses me off, did that Staffi not have a leash? Or was it roaming around by itself?  >:(

Poor Baby. Give her a gentle scruff for me. ;)

As usual, the responsible dickhead human who is SUPPOSED to be in charge of the Bully wasnt doing their job. And its the 2 animals that suffer. One gets munched and one potentially gets the Green Dream. >:(

Buy the girl a Schmako for me. [thumbsup]

That's so sad, mate.
That poor little thing.
I'd be gutted if that happened to my pregnant dog.
What happened to the other dog?  Injection I hope. Or at least the owner pays for the meds.

poor little defensless thing.
A staffy's face is pure muscle. They live to bite.
If you want to look on the bright side, at least you still have your best mate. The Staffy could have torn your little buddy into a million pieces.
They have no "off" switch.
And little dogs come back well form injuries.

It's just not right though.

that's exactly what has happened and in the middle of a city too

Or at least the owner pays for the meds.

well, that remains to be seen. as nice and apologetic as they were, the vet's bill was $1.597. they did offer to pay the bill.......time will tell

thanks for your kind words, guys   [thumbsup]

It's the bloody owners who deserve the injection. They buy the animal knowing it's reputation and convince themselves that "our baby is different" and then completely fail to protect others from their stupidity.

I'm sorry Melvin to her of her pain, hope she heals quickly.

Dickheads!

I had a Staf when I grew up and it was THE best dog I've ever had, but you have to be able to control them. One minute they are the most lovable dogs, next minute, they see another dog and nothing can stop them.

For mine, there was only one breed of dog it hated, German Shepherds, did not care about any other dog breed. I'd walk it down the street, dog's would be barking at him, he'd just look and keep on going. Then if he saw an Alsation, he'd nearly pull your arm out of your shoulder. :P

We used to hang a strip of leather off the clothesline, he'd grab it and we spun him around and he wouldn't let go.  [laugh]

Sorry for the threadjack.

Hope Jesse makes a speedy recovery and gets back to sniffing bums. ;)

they see another dog and nothing can stop them.

that is what has happened. and a simple thing like keeping a dog on a leash 24/7 would prevent it. i'm of an opinion that it's always owners fault; it starts with bad upbringing and later on only escalates

Rob, jesse was very lucky, staffy's usually go for the front legs and break them in their jaws so the other dog has trouble moving, then they just go for the throat and tear that out.

Sorry to hear what happened, just keep asking for that bill to be paid, I'm sure Jesse will make a full and speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear that melvin. The owness is solely on the owners.
Please do not make it about the DOG. I have a Staffy, he is my second, They are without doubt the most gentle dog when looked after, brought up and SOCIALISED properly. My Boy is 30kg and about 300mm off the ground, thats alot of muscle, he has been properly trained and socialised. Without doubt the best dog I have owned. I also question the "Staffy" tag, Pure bred and a dog with Staffy in it can be totally different. Your right the other dog should have been on a lead. Shame on the owners, make them pay, its the only way some people understand.
I hope they don't take it out on the dog!
My $0.02

sorry to see your pal in the wars, hope she gets better soon.
i have to ask though, was your dog on a leash?
by the way, i own two staffs and i consider myself a responsible pet owner, and mine are always on a leash outside my yard as common sense dictates. yes, they are powerful, and yes they usually dislike other dogs, but i agree with others who have said that the owners are the ones ultimately responsible, regardless of the breed they own.
again, i hope jessie gets well soon.

Please do not make it about the DOG

it always is the owner who creates a monster for whatever reasons. i've had dogs all my life; gigantic cane corso, int show winning alsatian, hunting dogs and now this "double trouble"
i know the "dog world" rather well and it's never about the dog

hey, i know that all staffs are not bad.................jessies and their best mate

Its the Humans that suck!!!!! >:(

Onya Jess. [thumbsup]

As the local vet says, humans bring their "PETS" in for euthanasia just because they are going on holidays. That just pisses me off big time!!! :o
What are these "adults" teaching their kids about responsible pet ownership for example?? :'(

guys, wondering what advice you can give me?

tried to get in touch with the owners of the other dog - they're not picking up the phone nor replying to messages. i can see why; the vet's bill is $1.600

now, what should i do in order to recover my money?
so far i've filled the report with city council, i know their first names and the mobile numbers

should i encounter a total lack of cooperation on their part, how do i go about taking them to court? any ducati-riding lawyers out there?  ;)

Find out where they live and show up on their doorstep..slap them with the bill or a wet fish...whatever makes you feel better. ;)

You can use a debt collector!! They will usually operate on a percentage of the sum your after!! And of course, can and will sue for the monies and could even bankrupt the turds in the process. Heh, heh, heh. ;D

Rob,
been in a somewhat similar situation myself, so I can relate to your anguish.
What you may need to do is proceed to a Civil law suit.
Engage a lawyer/solicitor to write a letter to the owners of the other dog (they will have the resources to find out where they live and usually have it hand delivered to them by a sheriif - yes, we have sheriffs in Australia). this will probably cost a few hundred dollars.
Usually, the mere threat of legal action is enough to get people to come good with the money.
If they decide to call your hand, you will need to decide whether you want to proceed with legal action. This may mean going to court.
First step is to make a call to a solicitor. They can advise on the best course of action. Then its up to you to decide.

hey, pepsduc, a voice from the past!!! good to hear from you again, joe

as to your advice:
well, the owners did call me yesterday and arranged the meeting for today; they're offering to cover half of the vet's bill which is $800
now i don't necessarily agree with it but i did look into other options since posting the question
i can write a letter of demand and if this remains unanswered i can start the court proceedings which will costs $65. however, it will take forever, was told that 6 mths is a minimum wait before the case could be heard. if they won't appear, it will be postponed an so on and so on. it can drag forever and the reality is that i will be effectively chasing only $800 because that's the difference between accepting they offer and going to court
so i've decided to accept it, cut my losses and forget it. it's not worth my effort

what will also happen is that the owners will be dealing with city council because i did report the accident and the council is sending a ranger over to my place today to take pictures of the injured dog and take my statement. they need this to prosecute the owners as well as put their dog on the dangers dog list for the future references.
someone asked if my dog was on the leash @ the time? no, it was not but also it was an "off leash time" in the park. however, under the animals companion act the owner of the dog is fully responsible for dog's action. if the injured dog was on leash or off leash it does not matter - attacking another dog is unacceptable under no circumstances. period. that's what i was told during conversation when i described what has happened and the circumstances leading to the attack. hence the council decision to prosecute
so that's how it looks like at the moment

Title: Re: COMPLETELY of topic

I think it is a compromise to accept the offer. If Jessie was a little girl would you accept half the hospital costs.

Not likely.

Sorry your honor I didn’t know my killer breed dog would attack???
I bought him to fetch a stick and play in the park.

IMO you buy a weapon for its intended purpose. Not to play in the park with.

If I do not secure my fire arms apropriatly, and they are used in a murder or in any other illegal activity I am held responsible.

This guy should be held accountable for his weapon.

What to do in this situation is very much a personal thing.  Do you want to put it all behind you and move on, or do you want to exact some sort of fairness and justice.  A hard one.

Yes there are so many analogies one can draw.  But at the end of the day make a decision on this case, and on what you want out of the process.

We are all somewhat removed and so our opinions are easy to give and are all offered to help.

For what it is worth I would meet the owners tell them that it is my expectation that they cover 100% of the bills and gauge their reaction.  I would explain to them about not wanting to go through the hassle of recoveries etc.  At the end of the day if they are totally unreasonable I would take the $400 and leave it alone.

Let the council deal with the other issues...

Anyway I hope I am not out of line with my opinion ...  I am just glad you lovely Jesse is on the mend.

She looks so much better.

Cheers

Bret

look, vince, i see your point and totally agree with it

but the reality is that it will take for ever and ever. and should i eventually have my day in court all i will receive is a court order for the owners of the dog to pay for my vet's bill which was $1.600, as that will be a nature of my civil case
it won't end with a penalty or criminal record for the owners. all what will happen is that they will get a court order to pay the money. now that in itself also presents problems; they're a couple of young people. they may say that their income are too small to pay a lump sum and they will offer to pay an  x  amount monthly. it will never end. there might be never ending excuses

from the financial standpoint i rather take the $800 and write off the rest
as to punishment for what has happened? i'm happy with council prosecuting them. it's a government institution so they will never stop until they will get their way. let them do their thing

It's a very hard decision Rob, whatever happens you know you will what is right for you.
I totally understand about taking what has been offered and leaving the council and it's departments to take care of the rest.
At least this way there will be some sort of legal action that concerns you but does not consume you.
You may have to go to court in the future but it would just be as the owner and witness instead of still looking for your costs to be recovered.

Knowing you as I have come of late this is what is best for you, getting it sorted and done asap then focusing on healing Jessie Jnr.

cheers
Matty...

I had something like this happen to me many years ago and did the same as you (and as Matty put it). Got what I could for the least amount of stress. After all we have enough sh...t happening in our lives  [bang] with out adding to it. Then you can focus your attentions on Jessie and her recovery........ Yes Rob, it has been a while, thats for sure! :(
my very bad. been meaning to maintain contact with everyone (have very fond memories of my visit to Sydney), but life has been leading me all over the place lately!

I do hope this siuation resolves itself soon and that you can put it behind you and move on. It is very disappointing when the actions/irresponsibilities of others affect us when we are just trying to mind our own business and live our lives. Unfortuneately this is the price we pay for living in a society, full of people from all different walks of life and with different morales and agendas.

I tend to agree with the general consensus here. half of something is better than all of nothing. If closure is what you're after, than accepting the $800 and being greatful Jessie is still alive may be your preferred resolution :)

There are always the old sayings....... 'what goes around comes around', 'the circle of karma', etc, etc.

I do wish a speedy recovery to little Jessie.

well, the city rangers have just left
they've taken my official statement, took pictures of jessie, copy of the vet's bill, cd with my photo-documentation of the extent of her injuries. what happens now is they will take the statement from the other party and than issue them with a penalty as well as with issue a "dangerous dog" notice on their dog. what it means that the dog will have to be on the leash 24/7 no exceptions, wear the muzzle at all times and possibly have a cage built inside the house
should they contest the penalties, i might have to go to court as a witness for the city council
all i want is to get the offered half of my bill and forget about it.............jessie seemed to forgot already. she is so much better now
however, she is extremely timid now and afraid of her own shadow but hopefully it will vanish at least partially as the times go by

what over emotional, uneducated completely over the top CRAP!!!!
staffordshire bull terriers are not a killer breed, we (the majority of staff owners) do NOT own these dogs to look tough, eat the neighbours pets or bet on at fights. if you had any contact with a staffy you would know they are the softest, kindest and most loyal dogs. just like any other owner will say about their particular favourite breed.
my pair are socialised and trained and i take them to the park, but, i am a responsible owner and i respect the nature of my pets and keep them on a leash outside the yard.
in short, this issue is about an irresponsible owner and not about the breed of the dog. keep your out of context sensationalist tabloid style comments to yourself.  >:(
and melvin, good to see jessie is on the mend. [thumbsup]
