Title: Custom headlight bracket Post by: TAftonomos on September 16, 2009, 01:59:35 PM I wasn't happy with the flipped U bracket I made, and I didn't want to just buy some fork clamps to mount the headlight either...
So, I wasted about a day screwing around till I came up with something 1/4" stainless rod, .600" bungs I turned on the lathe. Turning stock (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/TheoAftonomos/DUcati%20S4Rt/DSC_0097.jpg) Bungs and rod (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/TheoAftonomos/DUcati%20S4Rt/DSC_0096.jpg) Headling bracket tacked up (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/TheoAftonomos/DUcati%20S4Rt/DSC_0098.jpg) On bike (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/TheoAftonomos/DUcati%20S4Rt/DSC_0099.jpg) Hmmm....this is boring.. I know, lets make it look like the frame (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/TheoAftonomos/DUcati%20S4Rt/DSC_0102.jpg) On bike (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/TheoAftonomos/DUcati%20S4Rt/DSC_0103.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/TheoAftonomos/DUcati%20S4Rt/DSC_0104.jpg) I was going to powdercoat it black, but I think the 1/4" is small enough I could PC it to match the frame and not take away too much balance on the bike. You can also see my headlight lens I made and HID Bixenon projector in the picture.. Title: Re: Custom headlight bracket Post by: Dietrich on September 16, 2009, 02:16:21 PM Nice work! [thumbsup] More details on the headlight lens? (I must have missed the thread)

Title: Re: Custom headlight bracket Post by: Slide Panda on September 16, 2009, 02:58:33 PM Nice work! [thumbsup] More details on the headlight lens? (I must have missed the thread) Besides the lens, there's a HID projector in there tooTitle: Re: Custom headlight bracket Post by: TAftonomos on September 16, 2009, 07:18:20 PM I made a small fixture and heat formed lexan to the approx shape of the stock headlight lens. I did this because I wanted to use a bi-xenon projector inside the stock bucket. The monster has classic lines, and I didn't want to deviate from them too much, hence using the stock bucket.
The stock headlight SUCKS, so I wanted a clean/crisp HID beam with the stock bucket. After learning how to form the lexan, I've got it :) Waiting for the tefzel wire to arrive, finish the wiring mods to the bike and RIDE it. Should be less than 2 weeks with everything I need. Can't wait, I havn't ridden the monster for almost a year now! A few quick things: 1) Awesome! 2) Are you still doing the headlight bracket swap and chop? 3) What's going on with the coloring of your forks? Is it just grease and a funny reflection? It looks reddish black. Just curious. Title: Re: Custom headlight bracket Post by: TAftonomos on September 17, 2009, 04:27:33 AM Hi beam, low beam, and I guess a running light as well (there is one of those LED "angel eye" spreads about the projector). All bixenon really means to me is there is a movable shield inside the projector that adjusts the height of the cutoff (and hence hi/low). This way you get the HID high beam NOW, because otherwise it would take a few seconds to a minute to warm up correctly. Also not good for HID's to turn them on/off rapidly either, so bixenon is how car MFG solved the problem.
1 - Thanks! 2 - Yes, and I've got one bracket sitting on the shelf at the moment. It's shaved completely though, so no fairing to be mounted on this one 3 - Forks are 1098 base model worked over that have been hard anodized black. They are dusty/dirty at the moment. I think some of the coloring you are picking up if from the flash of the camera and the red walls on my garage. Title: Re: Custom headlight bracket Post by: redial on September 17, 2009, 09:34:01 AM can you post some more pics and details about the kit you used for your headlight? and how you got the clear lense?
also whats going on with your forks there? Title: Re: Custom headlight bracket Post by: junior varsity on September 17, 2009, 09:39:20 AM For those of you who are looking for a clear-lens headlight but without the trouble involved in forming your own lexan and acquiring an HID projector, might I suggest the Desmoworld Monster Clear-Glass Headlight kit. Its the complete bucket/ring/lens. Its what is on my Monster, shown below:

Yeah, not a projector, but it was bright and damn those other drivers.) Title: Re: Custom headlight bracket Post by: corey on September 18, 2009, 10:51:27 AM taft you are a sick bastard.

(I must have missed the thread) scuse' the mess Low beam/High beam - same light/lamp etc...just the shield moves internally. I love the headlight bracket (bummer to hide it with black paint/PC). That brake rotor is hawt too. You made that some time ago, no? Title: Re: Custom headlight bracket Post by: Celli on September 22, 2009, 03:27:06 AM Taft, it all looks wonderful!!! OMG! [bow_down]
Title: Re: Custom headlight bracket Post by: jesse370 on September 23, 2009, 06:31:22 PM so when will you sell them?
Title: Re: Custom headlight bracket Post by: TAftonomos on September 24, 2009, 10:31:17 AM Errr....dunno if I want to sell this part or just keep the one for me. Lots of time involved in creating it, so it wouldn't be cheap. If you REALLY want one, email me and we'll go from there.
OR, if you are talking about the headlight lens/projector....I do have an extra one of the projectors and a few extra len(s) that I made. Damn, man, that isn't boring. That's a perfect modern interpretation of the classic spring wire headlight support brackets used on the '72-74 Ducati 750 GT and '73-'74 Ducati 750 Sport. Those are P.E.R.F.E.C.T. my friend! Just ordered 5' of .250 6/4 Ti to make the same bracket...but a smidge lighter [laugh] What's wrong with me? I guess I'll sell the stainless one once I finish up the Ti version. I can't decide between putting the trellis design on it, or just the bare min to hold the light up for weight... Title: Re: Custom headlight bracket Post by: xcaptainxbloodx on December 09, 2009, 10:49:04 AM how much you gonna sell it for? my attempt at u bracket hacking has left me with a reliable but very wobbly headlight and ive been looking for something to replace it.

Love the wire bracket. I may have to try my hand at making one of those. Title: Re: Custom headlight bracket Post by: junior varsity on December 09, 2009, 12:59:31 PM extra kudos if you do it out of popsicle sticks
Title: Re: Custom headlight bracket Post by: yotogi on December 10, 2009, 06:14:25 AM extra kudos if you do it out of popsicle sticks Tried to make a rear hugger out of that material and found that it didn't hold up to my satisfaction in the wet. If you are a dry weather only rider though... Title: Re: Custom headlight bracket Post by: TAftonomos on December 10, 2009, 03:21:53 PM Really don't know what to ask for the bracket...I've got a few hours in it for sure. PM me an offer if you are serious, and I'll see if I can live with it :) [thumbsup]
