Title: Language help - what is this sign called? Post by: stopintime on September 23, 2009, 06:25:14 PM -
My last name is two names combined into one. The sign which pull them together is important to communicate when I buy stuff over the phone. It's like Joe Jones-Smith instead of Joe Jones Smith. In my country Joe Jones Smith would be considered Mr Smith, with first name Joe Jones. Joe Jones-Smith would be Mr Jones-Smith, with first name Joe. So, when I spell my name, what will be the word for that sign - ? Thanks [thumbsup] Title: Re: Language help - what is this sign called? Post by: zarn02 on September 23, 2009, 06:27:05 PM A hyphen, I believe.
As in "My last name is hyphenated." Title: Re: Language help - what is this sign called? Post by: somegirl on September 23, 2009, 06:29:40 PM "Hyphen" is the proper word.
Many people will also understand if you use "dash". Title: Re: Language help - what is this sign called? Post by: stopintime on September 23, 2009, 06:37:19 PM "Hyphen" is the proper word. Post by: NAKID on September 23, 2009, 06:37:38 PM In military terms, it's "tack"...
Wouldn't "dash" be typed / ? No, that's a slash Title: Re: Language help - what is this sign called? Post by: stopintime on September 23, 2009, 06:50:28 PM So,
"dash" is understandable, but "hyphen" is correct? I'll try to remember both [thumbsup] Title: Re: Language help - what is this sign called? Post by: ellingly on September 24, 2009, 03:08:04 AM So, Ja! (Jeg er forfatter samt en geolog. Jeg snakker litt norsk ;) )."dash" is understandable, but "hyphen" is correct? I'll try to remember both [thumbsup] Brushing up on the Scandanavian as I might be back over your way somewhat permanently. Most likely DK though, but hey, at least it's written roughly the same even the pronunciation is a bit crappy. Title: Re: Language help - what is this sign called? Norwegian is a bit more articulate, but written is similar. Jeg er forfatter og geolog. Jeg snakker litt norsk. VERY GOOD! We'll catch/meet up somehow when you get there...... Title: Re: Language help - what is this sign called? Post by: ellingly on September 24, 2009, 04:54:44 AM Norwegian is a bit more articulate, but written is similar. Hvordan har du det? Hvordan er været?Jeg er forfatter og geolog. Jeg snakker litt norsk. VERY GOOD! We'll catch/meet up somehow when you get there...... Whenever I'm next over your way, I will make sure I visit Oslo and catch up with you. Whenever work lets me go I will hopefully get to Copenagen (sorry, should really say København to keep the Danes happy), Århus in DK as well, Helsinki, Stockholm (and Luleå, as I have friends at the University there) and Oslo :). If it all goes to plan, that should be in November this year (otherwise it will be January. Yes, I realise the weather isn't so great then. That's the point. If I'm to move there I need to know that I can cope with the shit weather too). Title: Re: Language help - what is this sign called? Post by: stopintime on September 24, 2009, 12:05:51 PM Hvordan har du det? Hvordan er været? .............
Vel vel, nå slutter jeg å prate med meg selv [roll] Title: Re: Language help - what is this sign called? Post by: Holden on September 24, 2009, 01:14:54 PM I would like to take this opportunity to the distinguish the hyphen (-) from the en dash (–) and em dash (—).

Post by: ellingly on September 24, 2009, 01:20:02 PM I'll say this - what's nice about Norwegian, Swedish and Danish is that they are Germanic languages, like English, and their grammar is near on identical to English. Learning is more a case of learning some vocab, and not having to learn all the bloody nasty verb conjugation (without rules) that dominates English [bang]
Plus jentene elsker det. [thumbsup] Anyway, back on topic. - is a hyphen, colloquially a dash / is a 'solidus' or colloquially a forward slash Technically you have have different length dashes e.g. an en-dash is the length of an n, whereas an em-dash is the length of an m. Hyphen is the short dash :D. Off to work for me, now, kiddies. Play nice! Title: Re: Language help - what is this sign called? Post by: stopintime on September 24, 2009, 01:21:35 PM Holden, you made it absolutely certain that hyphen is what I was looking for. Thanks [thumbsup]

Som Ellingly skriver, Elling er forresten et kjent norsk navn, : det er jo faktisk ganske enkelt å lære. Til tross for bindestreker --- og bokstavene Æ Ø og Å Title: Re: Language help - what is this sign called? I can get a job there... good enough I suspect.I used college, too bad that one won't fly no more... I didn't bother with the javlaskit weather though... Plus, most of Scandanavia is more like my homeland (Tasmania) than the rest of Australia is. Finally, is saying 'zee wimmin' shallow enough of a reason? |
