Language help - what is this sign called?
«

-
My last name is two names combined into one. The sign which pull them together is important to communicate when I buy stuff over the phone. It's like Joe Jones-Smith instead of Joe Jones Smith. In my country Joe Jones Smith would be considered Mr Smith, with first name Joe Jones. Joe Jones-Smith would be Mr Jones-Smith, with first name Joe.
So, when I spell my name, what will be the word for that sign - ?
Thanks

A hyphen, I believe.
As in "My last name is hyphenated."

"Hyphen" is the proper word.
Many people will also understand if you use "dash".

So,
"dash" is understandable, but "hyphen" is correct? I'll try to remember both

Ja! (Jeg er forfatter samt en geolog. Jeg snakker litt norsk
).
Brushing up on the Scandanavian as I might be back over your way somewhat permanently. Most likely DK though, but hey, at least it's written roughly the same even the pronunciation is a bit crappy.

Norwegian is a bit more articulate, but written is similar.

Hvordan har du det? Hvordan er været?
Whenever I'm next over your way, I will make sure I visit Oslo and catch up with you. Whenever work lets me go I will hopefully get to Copenagen (sorry, should really say København to keep the Danes happy), Århus in DK as well, Helsinki, Stockholm (and Luleå, as I have friends at the University there) and Oslo
. If it all goes to plan, that should be in November this year (otherwise it will be January. Yes, I realise the weather isn't so great then. That's the point. If I'm to move there I need to know that I can cope with the shit weather too).

Takk, jeg har det bra.
Været er pent, men litt kaldt. Solen skinner og jeg kjører Ducati.
