Title: Honda Hawk GT Post by: the_Journeyman on October 17, 2009, 01:18:33 PM So... I'm in good with the local Japanese bike dealer. He called me yesterday and said I needed to swing by and take a look at something they just got on consignment. I did. It was a Honda Hawk GT. Interesting little bike. SSS, v-twin, 58HP, 43ft/lbs, 370 dry weight.
Should I jump on that for $2200 for a 1st bike for my wife? Input and suggestions are welcome [thumbsup] JM Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: superjohn on October 17, 2009, 01:25:43 PM The Hawk GT should be a fun little bike. For $2200 I think it'd be an excellent first bike for anyone.
Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: Speeddog on October 17, 2009, 01:27:01 PM They're a pretty good scooter, with a definite cult following.
Pretty easy to get more HP for cheap with a couple mods. Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: rendler on October 17, 2009, 01:29:19 PM Great first bike! I owned one and found it to be an easy to ride fun bike. I sold it to a girl who took the train from NYC to CT to look at it. I picked her up at the train station in New Haven. She bought it and rode it back to NYC without plates! Test ride it and I think you'll like it.
Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: the_Journeyman on October 17, 2009, 01:40:16 PM Already test rode it. Super smooth despite the cold & rain I test rode it. Brakes felt good, no unusual vibrations, Responded very crisply to the throttle, almost as snappy as my FI 900SS.
Also note: FULL Supertrapp system that sounds great. 8500 miles. JM Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: BPT on October 17, 2009, 03:36:53 PM I bought one for my son as his first street bike. Very cool bike with character. The Hawk GT was "the" bike to race before the SV came out. I imagine that is why they are so hard to find. I wish I had kept it to use as a track bike.
Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: m1moto on October 17, 2009, 04:58:14 PM Buy it - great little bike
Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: ducatiz on October 17, 2009, 05:14:51 PM they are great. one of my riding buddies has one and i always feel dirty looking at it cause i would have loved one.. that's a good price too, i'd hit it. they are well balanced bikes, lots of parts available.
Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: jwoconnor on October 18, 2009, 11:25:34 AM 58hp? More like 45.
Great little bikes, I had an '89 back in the day. My S2R1000 is the bike the Hawk wanted to be when it grew up. Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: angler on October 18, 2009, 11:28:26 AM I ride with a guy that has one and he loves it. Good aftermarket and cheap parts. We swap bikes often. I find it is noticeably less powerful, but easier to ride hard than my S2R. That said, my friend lusts over the monster every time we ride.
Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: Statler on October 18, 2009, 11:33:14 AM had one to commute on through college and grad school. Loved it. Sold it for more than I paid. Buy it.
Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: kopfjÀger on October 18, 2009, 11:35:58 AM You can mod the hell out of it. [evil]

The Hawk GT is everybit a small displacement Monster... with Honda refinement.

I'll know more in a day or two ;D I'll also be sure to pass along what happens too ;) JM Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: Statler on October 18, 2009, 04:58:38 PM G just told me if we turn her 620 into a trackbike she wants a hawk gt custom painted by Nate for her streetbike because of her fond memories of the bike (and I assume by extension my awesomeness as its owner before we got married).
and she asked me to slap you in case you were waffling on it's purchase. Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: LA on October 18, 2009, 05:35:22 PM Most Excellent bikes. You should buy it.
My old 850 Norton with worn out k81's and shocks will hang with the best of em though. Ass me how I know. ;D ;D LA Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: ducatiz on October 18, 2009, 05:44:45 PM Ass me how I know. ;D ;D LA Wouldn't you like to be well lubed first? Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: RetroSBK on October 19, 2009, 04:27:42 AM Great bike... Its a Honda, really no issues to worry about, as is the case with most all Honda motorbikes..
Keep it clean and pretty much stock, and pass it on after a cpl years... My Funny Hawk GT story. In all my free time, I instruct at a couple of track days as a riding coach. As a rule, Hawk GT's are either riden well and quietly by women, regardless of the pace although most tend to be more conservative) or they end up being picked up after trying to rail on the thing and flicking it down the road... Great bike! and GREAT wife's bike! Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: ducpainter on October 19, 2009, 04:50:31 AM I have a buddy that instructed for years at Penguin school on a modded Hawk...with street tires
It's amazing how fast those things will go in the right hands. What about the left hands? Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: Buckethead on October 19, 2009, 04:58:47 AM You can twist the left hand all you like, but since the throttle's on the right, it won't make you any faster.
Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: ducatiz on October 19, 2009, 05:02:31 AM What about the left hands? smart ass! When I was looking to get number 2 son up on 2 wheels the Hawk GT was on my short list. Lucky for us (I am a Yami dude) we scored a SRX6 first! He successfully passed that course and graduated to a Monster a few years back. I would have bought the Hawk GT as well tho, it would have hurt (just like the wife's Kawi) but I would have bought one! ;D Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: Adam in TX on October 20, 2009, 04:48:03 PM check out my buddies Hawk transformation:

" I know what you mean... *glances over at YELLOW M750 and YELLOW 900SS* and Holly-Hawk says "Blue girls need love too!" JM Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: DesmoDiva on October 20, 2009, 05:15:03 PM and we all know yellow is fastest...... [evil] ;D

When is the missus getting started, or does she already have some riding background? Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: ducatiz on October 21, 2009, 04:27:09 AM very nice piece and looks 100% stock too -- even the mirrors!
Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: somegirl on October 21, 2009, 06:31:54 AM Congrats JM, looks good. [thumbsup]
Hope to see some action pictures later on. Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: Rameses on October 23, 2009, 11:49:43 AM Nice score JM!! A guy I used to ride with once in a while had one. He'd modded his heavily and turned it into a total hooligan bike. And Nate's right. With the correct rider, those bikes're a lot faster then anyone would think they could be. Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: Buckethead on October 23, 2009, 05:07:53 PM And Nate's right. With the correct rider, those bikes're a lot faster then anyone would think they could be. But not blue. Blue is a slow color. Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: Monsterlover on October 24, 2009, 07:16:31 AM Not as slow as yellow.
If i had my way. . . id build a machine who's only purpose is to smash yellow bikes and cars. Title: Re: Honda Hawk GT Post by: the_Journeyman on October 29, 2009, 03:04:35 PM Cool little bike, JM. Congrats! When is the missus getting started, or does she already have some riding background? She's had about 10 minutes of getting familiar with my old, beat up TS185 in the backyard and that is it. We've had our first lesson though! Very first thing we did - I found a small incline and we spend some time coasting down the incline, motor off. C had to get an understanding for the fact the bike will balance itself and will go where you look & point your shoulders. We then turned the bike uphill and practiced using the clutch and riding the bike under its own power up the hill. Might have another lesson this weekend too! JM |
