Title: Cracked Exhaust Bracket, I need help...FAST (please) Post by: Jumptship on December 14, 2009, 04:44:20 AM Just noticed this morning...anyone else ever seen this happen?
What are suggestions for fix/repair? I am supposed to ride in a Toys for Tots run this Saturday... They will also tell you if they installed Termis it would be covered. I would take pictures, then go to the dealership see what they say and make a decision if they have bad news to have it welded. IMO it could be welded and painted by you in no time and that break will not affect the frame at all. just my .02

or get a tube of mighty putty. Title: Re: I need help...FAST (please) Post by: Buckethead on December 14, 2009, 04:57:40 AM One more reason you should have gone with Boom Tubes. [coffee]
Title: Re: I need help...FAST (please) Post by: Howie on December 14, 2009, 04:58:28 AM Go to your dealer, see what they say. Then get the tab welded so you can do your "Toys for Tots" run.

Title: Re: I need help...FAST (please) Post by: Jumptship on December 14, 2009, 05:06:32 AM It is an '05 so it is out of warranty...
I planned on getting the 12K done soon and can get it repaired at the dealer then (no Duc dealer close by...damn you Valdosta, GA!) I am just let down by not able to ride it in the T4T ride if I can't get it resolved by this weekend. Title: Re: I need help...FAST (please) Post by: gage on December 14, 2009, 05:58:04 AM anyone can weld that... There would be no reason to have that done by the dealer
Title: Re: I need help...FAST (please) Post by: teddy037.2 on December 14, 2009, 06:24:17 AM +1 on the zip tie if you can't fix it before the ride.
no need to drill, just take out the fastener and run it through that hole and around the frame tube Title: Re: I need help...FAST (please) Post by: hackers2r on December 14, 2009, 07:26:14 AM Since it's out of warranty, get it welded and find some touch up paint. Should solve the problem.
Title: Re: I need help...FAST (please) Post by: Spidey on December 14, 2009, 07:33:57 AM Like others said, I'd ziptie and safetywire in the short term and get it welded in the long term.
Another short-term option is to put a hoseclamp (one of those with rubber on the inside that you get from the hardware store) around the frame tube. Then you can use either a ziptie or a piece of metal (who know the kind they sell with holes already drilled in 'em) to connect the hose clamp to the exhaust hanger. But frankly, that's more complicated than it need to be. Just ziptie it. talked to a local welding shop and gonna take it to them this week. Now, where did I put that trailer...? LOL Title: Re: I need help...FAST (please) Post by: Monster Dave on December 14, 2009, 08:27:36 AM I agree the that zip tie idea sounds doable. But a more suitable fix would be to use a little JB Weld on it. That would hold itin place no problem.

Title: Re: I need help...FAST (please) Post by: Porsche Monkey on December 14, 2009, 08:56:50 AM Welding is the only way to go. Then make sure your pipes line up without having to force them.
Title: Re: I need help...FAST (please) Post by: herm on December 14, 2009, 12:12:35 PM plumbers tape, a few nuts/bolts, and some red spray paint, until you an get welded.

best bet is to sand it down, weld it tig/mig/arc whatever you have available, grind it own and it hit it with spray paint. I doubt any shop would really charge you money for a short 20 second weld if you bring the pieces cleaned and ready. If they dont, be sure to throw them a nice tip. Title: Re: I need help...FAST (please) Post by: Raux on December 14, 2009, 01:21:13 PM trailer? take the cans off, throw em in a backpack and ride to the shop [evil]

Title: Re: I need help...FAST (please) Post by: Adam in TX on December 18, 2009, 04:26:17 PM Drill hole and Ziptie. ditto. Then, in like three or four months when you remember again, have it welded... Title: Re: I need help...FAST (please) Post by: Jumptship on December 24, 2009, 08:42:07 AM GTG, got a welder to fix it up in a hurry, rattle can primer and paint...job done. Did a little altering of the exhaust hanger to make the hole longer so there isn't any pressure on the bolt so should be a long term, solid fix.
BTW Toys for Tots ride was excellent. >2200 bikes (mostly HD's or wannabe's) did see a NEW Monster 1100S in the lot though. very nice, anyone on this board? |
