Title: Left coasters - renting a bike?
Post by: Slide Panda on December 28, 2009, 12:18:05 PM
A riding buddy is trying to work up a west coast trip. He's planning to rent an HD from eagle rider. I've ridden harleys and am quite fine limiting my experience on them to the past tense.

So based on the offerings from eagle anyone have bikes they would suggest?  Any other rental options out there to pick up something on the sportier side? Fuel range is a concern since he'll be on a touring bike. So as much fun as a rental hyper would be I'd be stopping 3x as often

Whereabouts on the left coast are you talking?

Does he have a route planned or know what city he wants to pick up the bike?  I know that the Eagle Rider in SF has/had more than just Harleys.  Here's the Bay Area local resources thread for bike rental options around here.

Frankly, if he's gonna spend any significant amount of time riding, he should just buy a used bike, ride it and then sell it right after.

Dave Johnson has Rent a Duc operation out of a shop in San Diego and one in L.A. Check him out.

Plan is in the most vague of stages. Tentativly it's going from LA to SF or perhaps vice versa. The plan might be a little more your than is really to my favor but that's tbd.

I've looked at Eagles selection but it doesn't really say shag bikes are availible at what location. They do list An ST3...  Honda and kawi STs also. I do have a thing for the big ugly 1200 GS.

It's probably going to be a week long trip - so I don't think a buy n sell is in the cards.

Got a website for that RC?  Problem is it might be a one way trip

San Francisco has like, four shops one could rent from-really depends on your starting point, but that would open up the realm of what's available.

I rented from the Eagle Rider near LAX about a year ago. Got a BMW r1200rt and had a good rental experience from ER.

The big Beemer was easy to ride, but beware of the tall seat height. (I'm 6'4", so I had no problem with it) Lots of storage in the huge cases. That bike might be a good option for you. I prefer its handling to that of the GS. YMMV

try www.admotours.com (http://)
LA county rentals are here (http://www.rental-motorcycle.com/namerica/usa/california/los_angeles_rental.html)
i've rented from them a couple of times, or through one of their affiliates.

i have also rented from
www.sportbikerentals.com (http://) in vegas. they are actually based out of LA though. I believe I had unlimited miles.
i don't think they will do a one way though. their security deposit was also much higher than the other guys, but the guys running it were riders and on the ride back to the hotel we were discussing just how fast the 1098 would go   :)

???

I always trip out on guys posting on the internet for people to look for a website for them. I right clicked his statement and googled "rent a ducati" and (holy shit!) found this:

 http://www.rentaducati.com/ (http://www.rentaducati.com/)
 :)

They have offices in both LA and SF so a one way trip probably is doable.

Who peed in your corn flakes today? Ive got hundreds of posts helping people out who could have found the info here or on google - I ask for one little favor and you 'trip out'

I'm doing all my current posting from a phone at my folks house in small town NC. Not exactly the ideal Internet environment.

I appreciate the link thanks for that. But I don't appreciate the sarcastic commentary

Relax brother. Just pointing out the absurdity of people actively posting on the Internet asking people to look up stuff for them ...on the Internet. I think it's funny, weird, odd, whatever. Not enough of an issue for you to get "unappreciative" over.

Can anyone recommend any good online seach engines?  I've heard there are some good ones like Goggles and Yippee, or something like that.

And while were at it, can someone recommend a good web board for monster owners?  ???

Seriously, there's nothing wrong with asking for advice about resources you can find easily on the web. I'm sure the OP is also interested in who's cheap, who has a good reputation, who is active in the community, etc.

Thanks to the internet, while we can find information easily, sorting through it is another matter.

Entirely different questions which would be reasonable to ask.

"Hey are the vendors associated with the DMF generally reliable?" -Legit question...
"Hey I heard there is this website called the Ducati Monster Forum, anyone got a link to the site?"  ;)

And I don't appreciate your tone.  ;D

so anyway.

if you're starting in SF, my vote goes to dubbelju. awesome, awesome, awesome.  [thumbsup]

me and eltristo rented Beemers from them last year for a week

very helpful giving us route ideas and things to see, they even offered to hold luggage, but we pretty much had everything on us already so it wasn't needed.

Here's what I suggest:

Rent bike in LA.  Head up I-5 to 126 West to Santa Paula.  Take 150 to Ojai and call it a day.

From Ojai, ride 33 all the way to 166, turn around and go back to Ojai for the night.

Next day, hit 101/HWY 1 all the way up through Santa Barbara, Big Sur, and onto Monterey.

In the morning bail up to San Francisco and ride around town.  Stop at O-Reilly's Pub on Green Street, then drop down to the Buena Vista for an Irish Coffee, etc.

Then head across the Golden Gate Bridge and head North to where ever the heart leads.

Oh, and find time to drop in at Alice's Resturant.  http://www.alicesrestaurant.com/ (http://www.alicesrestaurant.com/)

Turn around and do it all backwards.

This allows for scenic long range cruising, some very nice twistys, and some cool urban riding in The City.

If I may expand on NorDog's suggestions for the "southern" portion of the trip...

By all means, head north on 33, but when you get to 166, hang a right and continue to Maricopa where you rejoin 33.  North to McKittrick and take highway 58 heading west.  Wind your way past the 101 and then spend the night in San Luis Obispo or Morro Bay.  Now you can hit highway 1 nice and early, you have all day to get to  Monterrey, and you can use that time to go back and re-run the best sections .  Ojai to Carmel without ever riding on anything  more than two lanes wide.

I second the Hwy 1 up to Monterey.  I lived in Monterey for a couple of years and the riding between there and San Luis Obispo is absolutely gorgeous.  Definitely better than 101.

Call the original and the best - Sportbike rentals - www.sportbikerentals.com (http://)

Santiago is the guy that started the whole rental thing, and the other guys just dont do it as well.. Sorry.

These bikes are top kick and in great shape, and they are riders that know what they are doing...

BTW... the route should be

101 to the 33, 33 up and over to the 58, 58 back to the 101, Nacimento furgesson rd to hwy 1, 1 north.

Best. route. ever.

I have rented twice from

http://rentaducati.com/?gclid=CML6o5Xt_54CFRsFagod13IEGw (http://rentaducati.com/?gclid=CML6o5Xt_54CFRsFagod13IEGw)

Great experience both times. Couldn't be easier. Pick up the bike here at GP Motorcycles in San Diego takes about 15 minutes. Return when you're done takes about 5 minutes. Both times wee for friends visiting from out of town
