Left coasters - renting a bike?

if you're starting in SF, my vote goes to dubbelju. awesome, awesome, awesome.  

me and eltristo rented Beemers from them last year for a week


very helpful giving us route ideas and things to see, they even offered to hold luggage, but we pretty much had everything on us already so it wasn't needed.

Here's what I suggest:

Rent bike in LA.  Head up I-5 to 126 West to Santa Paula.  Take 150 to Ojai and call it a day.

From Ojai, ride 33 all the way to 166, turn around and go back to Ojai for the night.

Next day, hit 101/HWY 1 all the way up through Santa Barbara, Big Sur, and onto Monterey.

In the morning bail up to San Francisco and ride around town.  Stop at O-Reilly's Pub on Green Street, then drop down to the Buena Vista for an Irish Coffee, etc.

Then head across the Golden Gate Bridge and head North to where ever the heart leads.

Oh, and find time to drop in at Alice's Resturant.  http://www.alicesrestaurant.com/

Turn around and do it all backwards.

This allows for scenic long range cruising, some very nice twistys, and some cool urban riding in The City.

If I may expand on NorDog's suggestions for the "southern" portion of the trip...

By all means, head north on 33, but when you get to 166, hang a right and continue to Maricopa where you rejoin 33.  North to McKittrick and take highway 58 heading west.  Wind your way past the 101 and then spend the night in San Luis Obispo or Morro Bay.  Now you can hit highway 1 nice and early, you have all day to get to  Monterrey, and you can use that time to go back and re-run the best sections .  Ojai to Carmel without ever riding on anything  more than two lanes wide.

I second the Hwy 1 up to Monterey.  I lived in Monterey for a couple of years and the riding between there and San Luis Obispo is absolutely gorgeous.  Definitely better than 101.

These bikes are top kick and in great shape, and they are riders that know what they are doing...

BTW... the route should be

101 to the 33, 33 up and over to the 58, 58 back to the 101, Nacimento furgesson rd to hwy 1, 1 north.

Great experience both times. Couldn't be easier. Pick up the bike here at GP Motorcycles in San Diego takes about 15 minutes. Return when you're done takes about 5 minutes. Both times wee for friends visiting from out of town
