However, I'll bet that the primary drive on that thing weighs more than the engine in my S4RS. Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: LowThudd on January 04, 2010, 05:36:16 PM You are all over the place. It is fun to appreciate all sorts of bikes. I forgot what you were originally looking for? I was just lookin. lol. Not going to buy an HD for a very, very long time. I was first looking to buy an 03 M800 about three months ago. I found one, made a deal with the guy for $1500, had not brought cash and lost the deal when the uy backed out a week later and kept it to fix himself. I was so bummed(I fell in love), that I just bought the first bike I could find that I liked for $800(Yamaha Radian). It's a good first bike, but there are alot of things I'm not in love with about it. So I'm just looking for any Ducati in a low price range that I can find. Will consider partial trades + cash: heritage springer or a Prius or insight or BMW GS 1200 or 800 On the Prius forums, in an alternate universe, someone has posted a thread: "Thinking of trading up, what do you think?" Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: NorDog on January 05, 2010, 06:17:15 AM fyi, there's nothing "hd" about that bike. And then there's that. Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: Travman on January 05, 2010, 06:32:41 AM fyi, there's nothing "hd" about that bike. The Tiawan built RevTech engine is a copy of the HD Evo engine. So the engine design is HD.Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: kopfjÀger on January 05, 2010, 07:00:43 AM The Tiawan built RevTech engine is a copy of the HD Evo engine. So the engine design is HD. RevTech engines are built in Korea. afaik Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: ducatiz on January 05, 2010, 07:21:40 AM that's just the way it is, all the old school designs are being picked up by foreign makers. the AMC Powertech 4.0 I6 in all those Jeeps is now being made in China for the chinese versions of the Jeeps... and apparently is frigging awesome since they retooled everything with CNC lathes.
it's a shame they are enjoying that engine and we can't get it at all. Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: NAKID on January 05, 2010, 07:22:58 AM The Tiawan built RevTech engine is a copy of the HD Evo engine. So the engine design is HD. That's like saying you can call the Hyosung a Ducati because they copied the design... Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: arai_speed on January 05, 2010, 07:48:00 AM Is Batman selling his weekend cruiser? Times must be rough...
Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: ducatiz on January 05, 2010, 07:55:35 AM Hardly a copy! Watercooled, no trellis..
Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: Travman on January 05, 2010, 08:47:01 AM That's like saying you can call the Hyosung a Ducati because they copied the design... The RevTech engine's design is a copy of the HD Evo engine. It can not be stated in any other terms without distorting the fact. Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: VisceralReaction on January 05, 2010, 08:53:34 AM how do you turn left? very very slowly! :DTitle: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: NorDog on January 05, 2010, 08:59:01 AM how do you turn left? Make three right turns. Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: junior varsity on January 05, 2010, 09:06:19 AM Copy is a pretty strong word. Are the parts interchangeable?
Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: NAKID on January 05, 2010, 10:38:09 AM The RevTech engine's design is a copy of the HD Evo engine. It can not be stated in any other terms without distorting the fact. Point taken, let's say it like this. Aftermarket engine builder puts their version of a Chevy 350 into some other car. Does that now make the car a Chevy because it has a copy of a Chevy engine in it? Of course not... Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: junior varsity on January 05, 2010, 10:40:53 AM +1. Unless they ordered the engine from H-D, or removed it from an H-D, then its not an H-D. Its certainly a V-Twin. Or perhaps, H-D based, but not an H-D.
Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: LowThudd on January 05, 2010, 10:43:43 AM OK, I was just paraphrasing. Of course I know it isn't an actuall HD. But it is obviously HD based. Jeez [laugh]
Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: Travman on January 05, 2010, 10:54:41 AM Copy is a pretty strong word. Are the parts interchangeable? Not sure what you mean by that. It is not an accusation that the RevTech engine's design is copy of the HD Evo engine. It is a fact. For that matter, S&S, Ultima and a several other companies produce engines which are copies of the HD Evo engine design. How else should I word it? I doubt parts are interchangeable from an 80 ci Evo engine and a one of the RevTech engines. RevTech makes engines ranging from 88ci to 125 ci. I did not say anything derogatory about RevTech as a company. I'm sure that has been covered plenty of times on Harley forums. Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: NAKID on January 05, 2010, 11:13:59 AM You're missing my point. Putting an HD engine, real or copy, does not make the bike a HD.
Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: NorDog on January 05, 2010, 11:20:40 AM I think the phrase once used to describe these crate engines, like those from RevTech and S&S, is "clone".
But really, you guys are in danger of picking the fly shit out of the pepper here. Having said that, I think it safe to say, univocally, that had this bike been built with an S&S X-Wedge mill it would have nothing HD about it. In any event, Ben Hur coulda used that spikey primary cover-thingie in the chariot race. Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: LowThudd on January 05, 2010, 11:28:46 AM In any event, Ben Hur coulda used that spikey primary cover-thingie in the chariot race. Yea, I'm not a fan of the primary cover. Sticks out way to far. The rest of the bike, the body and frame work I really like. Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: Travman on January 05, 2010, 01:10:30 PM You're missing my point. Putting an HD engine, real or copy, does not make the bike a HD. I get that. I didn't realize I had made so many posts on this thread subject. Sorry if I drew this out. I thought you were missing my point. Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: NAKID on January 05, 2010, 01:13:01 PM It's cool [thumbsup]

Seriously? So what you're saying is you'd rather buy one right off the showrrom floor that they claim to be a new model when all it really is is old technology in a warmed over leftover that they threw the parts bin at and has is a different fender and a different paint scheme? Do I have that right? [laugh] I'd rather have the custom. Take a good look. It has a lot of higher end components than the standard HD. Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: junior varsity on January 06, 2010, 05:20:35 AM but it can't turn left...?
Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: ICON on January 06, 2010, 05:31:43 AM Here's my Chopper/Bobber. I'm at the wiring stage at the moment. I'm still waiting on some brake and clutch lines. Hope you like. [moto]

[moto] The bike and the garage are awesome. http://www.flickr.com/photos/monsters4rs/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/monsters4rs/) If I was ever in the market for an HD clone/copy/similarity [bang], that'd be just right. Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: NorDog on January 06, 2010, 05:58:08 AM Seriously? Do I have that right? [laugh] I'd rather have the custom. Take a good look. It has a lot of higher end components than the standard HD. Ah, do you have it right? Not quite. My FXDX actually handles rather well. I was trying to be nice and find something positive to say about that custom, but the fact is that style of bike is (_!_) ugly; that particular custom just a bit less so. Those types of bikes are made primarily to be seen, not ridden, and I don't care for what I see. Sure it has "higher end components" but so what. Components must also be evaluated for how that contribute to the whole; this one's a whole mess imo. ICON's chopper comes much closer to what I would find interesting in a HD type custom. Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: Speedbag on January 06, 2010, 06:23:32 AM Seriously? Do I have that right? [laugh] Not really. You are correct to some degree that they mishmash parts for maximum bang for the tooling buck, but they constantly evolve the guts of the old air cooled engines while keeping an old-tech appearance. They still use pushrod actuated valves (for now) but they are a far cry from the old days. And for heavy bikes they handle quite well. Me, I'll keep my Street Rod. ICON's chopper comes much closer to what I would find interesting in a HD type custom. +1 And here's a sneak peek of my Never Ending Project, to be done by spring, of which only a couple very select folks on this board have seen: (http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/oo118/Speedbag/Chop2.jpg) Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: ICON on January 06, 2010, 06:30:11 AM Are you running some baffles in that exhaust sir. I was able to squeeze some in my after modifying them first. [thumbsup]
By the way, thanks for the kind words. The paint job will be very simple. All black with an Ace of Spades on each side of the tank and a tiny line coming down the tank and fender. Sweet and simple like my S4RS. Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: Speedbag on January 06, 2010, 06:59:26 AM No baffles yet. I'll consider after the first traffic stop. Not much room for them though....
Maybe the pipe wrap will help. [laugh] Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: junior varsity on January 06, 2010, 10:25:46 AM might i suggest ensuring that it can turn left without dragging parts even at slow speeds, unlike the one above.

Icon, I dare you to put an Ohlins sticker on your seat shock ;) Title: Re: If I was ever in the market for an HD... Post by: Privateer on January 09, 2010, 08:31:04 AM cool looking bike, but it's a trailer queen.
