Ok I am a newb here, and been trolling through all the threads in relation to bling, but is it really necessary? I love my Monster as it is, as the designer had intended. Ok I have made a couple of minor alterations but that is more for function rather than beauty. Don't get me wrong I love the work I have seen on here and the obsession you guys n gals have gone to, but I am not sure I can tamper with my baby that way!
Note: I have posted this on a Friday, being my mindless question day! ;D
Yes, bling is absolutely necessary. I don't know why, it just is :P
All my bling was added for function rather than form, it just happens to look nice as well.
Any true addict will be able to justify adding bling in the name of function anyway ;D

Ah bling that has function and form was a bonus? And here's me thinking that most of the bling was for pure vanity! ;D I guess I am still in the early stages of my relationship with my girl (the bike not the other half [laugh]). So the question is now what it truly bling and what is functional bling? Can it be separated? And who out there will admit they have bling for vanity vs form??
OMG!!! :o
Is a Lingam to a Yoni??
A Ying to a Yang??
A beer to a Barbie??
Its posalootly, absatively necessary! [evil] [roll] [thumbsup] [beer].
Its what makes it YOUR bike!! [bow_down]
Hah - you're just teasing, trying to stir up things on the DMF.
I'm not falling for it.....

Ah so what you are saying it is an exhibitionist type of thing? 8) I guess owning a Ducati is the first step in standing out in the pedestrian biker crowd! But couldnt I argue (and probably get shouted down [laugh] that the fact I am keeping it "standard" would stand out in the crowd? Can you go too far with bling? There is something to be said for an "original" Monster in it's pure form? ???

So your saying that this thread is a thinly disguised veil for some intelligent conversation on the pros and cons of bling? Or that I am merely filling in time on a Friday (here Down Under that is) ;D [laugh]
Ahh, another newbie with noble intentions ... that mindset doesn't last long around here generally ... but you stay strong!
Of course there is nothing wrong with the odd 'performance enhancing, aesthetically pleasing modification'. Bling is something that goes on an overweight SUV or a rapper's teeth not on a Ducati.
So time to 'fess up - the orginal post above was made by your other half in an effort to curb your spending wasn't it? Keep it standard indeed ... ha! says he with the full termi system.
Although admittedly when I saw a stock Monster (it was about a year ago now and it didn't stay stock for long), my thought process was something like:
. ohh, that looks a bit wrong
. maybe if you just changed a couple of things such as .....
. but in reality it is not a bad looking bike standard

You have the mod virus already. After your newb days, you'll learn to live with it and finally appreciate it. Some more time passes and you start throwing away the stock parts in your closet, as you realize there's no going back.

haha stay strong indeed - and no this was not made by my better half - I made the decision to get the bike and my better half supported it (no choice really - I do get to make those sort of decisions without repurcussion - I hope! ;D ;D [laugh])
Is the termi considered as blling? I thought more of a performance and safety aspect - loud pipes do save lives
And you do have a point Betty - I hate the ugly cow udder under the S2R/S4R. I guess there are some areas where standard is not so beautiful. But in years to come would a standard bike become a collectors item over modified?

strangely enough I do have the standard exhaust, but that is being kept for a legal perspective i.e. some police officer may lay claim to my bike being too loud [leo]

You're not listening ... ahh, so much to learn [cheeky]
Like I said it is a 'performance enhancing, aesthetically pleasing modification' ... bling is something you buy your partner as a trade-off for your 'performance enhancing, aesthetically pleasing modification' which as you add, incorporates additional safety features not found on the standard bike.

Yup, even I had to try to teach the OP a thing or two ;D
I got a few laughs out of it too - which was needed, so I'm happy ;)
The latest Monster models are made for bling, why else would they make them with those ugly pipes, mirrors and rear sets.
P.S. will be posting pics this weekend for some advise as I need extra BLING, have Bike Craft page open now.
as the designer had intended...
Don't forget my friend that anything that rolls off the showroom floor is a compromise between what the design team drew, the marketers thought they could sell & what the bean counters were willing to spend on production. Think of bling/upgrades/modifications as getting your baby a littlecloser to what the designers originally penned. That's my line & I'm sticking with it - so far the wife hasn't asked too many questions.

Good point about the design intent - it is, after all, what the Monster was designed for ... personalisation. Geez, the
porn bling accessories catalogue that comes with every Monster has been able to sustain the entire Italian print industry for 15 years.
Also don't forget that you are helping the world economy ... social sustainability is a good thing, right?
Just to let you know - Your first OZmo group ride is allowed bling free.
One piece of bling must be added to gain admission to every ride from there on........
Thems are the rules

Ah so that is the cure for the GFC? If everyone bought a Monster and then purchased enhancements or modifications (bling is such a cheap filthy word ;D ;D) then we would be contributing to the bigger picture. Plus reducing the carbon footprint? ??? [roll] [laugh]

But my bike refused to stay blingless. It damaged itself in it's effort to get bling. The rest is history.

yeah I know temptation will probably get the better of me, then it will turn in to an OCD.
Just another thought years down the track will bikes without bling be more collectors items? I am making a loose (and that is my disclaimer) statement based on what I have seen in the car market - classic cars that is (I am a Pontiac nut also). There is better value in an original than modified vehicle. I am sure the Monster will become a collector bike as it is bike that changed the course of the market and started modern naked bikes. So therefore bling could be bad?? ??? ;D
Nice theory but the 'classic' market is extremely fickle. Depending on your perspective it could be argued that the Monster was Ducatis only truly mass produced bike.
Mass production rarely points towards escalating values ... if you were to hope for a stock bike being much sought after it would need to be in mint, original condition ... but where is the fun in that? Also if there is going to be any increase in value I would think you would need an extraordinarily long timeframe.
Collectable, classic and value are often have conflicting ideals.

Just keep all your original bits in a box so you can change it back to original. But to be honest, everyone likes bling. I have a long way to go as I am still a Bling Virgin. Slowly but surely I am sure the corruption will get the better of me. ;D

to be considered classic or collectable is only a time frame of roughly 30 years, which could make the first 'series' of Monsters collectable by 2024 approximately - or is that your definition of an extraordinary amount of time?

agree there, and it is a matter of perception. An example of that is the aussie muscle car market a few years ago had that massive boon and I thought "why?" ???

Its a bit like the first time I saw a Toyota Corona station wagon at a classic car show ... neither classic, collectable or valuable ... but that's just my opinion.
As you may know we had our Fiat and Lambretta on display for Australia Day ... neither are original ... and yes it is easy to 'bling' a 45 year old scooter ... but we don't own them as investments. Interesting conversation with the bro-in-law that he was offered a decent amount of money for one of his scooters (which was not for sale) and he said he couldn't sell it for that because he simply doesn't think it is worth that much [laugh]

Yeah I get that with my HQ Premier - it is in original condition (and I mean original down to the venetian blind and badly faded paint) and people offer me what I consider silly money. It is not for sale - I am leaving it to my daughter.
BUT back on subject I think the responses and comments have satisfied my curiosity for a Friday afternoon! Thanks all!

exactly!
remember Ducati has made many choices in spec throughout the years in the name of ensuring that the most expensive bike is 'worth' the most, so ever bike is a compromise. A stock bike is beautiful, but you can also view them as blank canvases ready for your paint - are you Pollock or Van Gogh?
Me? I'm not blinging - I'm building the bike ducati forgot to make, the S2rs, they always upspec the top of the line 2 valve except when the S4rs arrived and then they didn't want to cannibalise sales. So I build it the way it should have been done.
Other than a carbon headlight mount and a dash cover nothing I have done is bling....even the oil cap got replaced because the stock one leaked.

I am curious to know further what you mean about your S2RS. It looks pretty top spec to me, and I did a couple of years looking before I found the right Monster (i.e. looking at 900, 1000 - had to have dry clutch!) What other mods have you done? So far I have put a carbon fibre rear hugger to protect the shock from excessive dirt, and a spacer kit on the clutch cover to open it up. Maybe that could be another thread or point me in the direction if there is already one in existence! [thumbsup]
bling, from the latin, spendeth till broke! is the cornerstone of monster ownership! [evil]if you're happy with a standard monster you would be happy with say..........a standard cbr600. [roll] it's just not in our (as monster owners) DNA to leave things alone. it's one of the attractions, sure you like dukes, of course you do! how could you not? is there even any other brand? want a really fast one? get a 1098, want a comfy one? get a multistrada, want an old school one? get a sport classic, want a tourer? get a st3s etc. etc. the monster was created to be messed with. It would seem however we have a disbeliever among us. [bang] those with a lack of conviction can be spotted easily, std mirrors, udders, nothing to polish on a wet day, you sir stand out like a sore thumb! [leo] It is your duty to modify. you must lighten, hot rod and polish something with every pay cheque, failure to do so has dire consequences, you will be cast from the glory of blingdom and cast down into the abyss of mediocrity! Bling! What in interesting topic. Bling for the most part is just that, BLING. As I think back over the bikes I have owned, bling has been a factor in every one. Be it functional-performance enhancing or merely eye candy. LOL I have even dipped into the "mother of all bling" bikes and rode an HD for a few years (please don't beat me as I have since woken up). I view bling as a two-fold process. A match if you will between custom-make it your own (paint, shiny bits, anything CF) and funtion (clip-ons, rear sets, Ti, weight reduction ((although cutting back on cheese burgers would likely be more effective and less costly)) but I digress...The point is though, bling can only be defined by the beholder and is very personal, but then I say this as my machine is currently in pieces and parts are awaiting powder coat, not too mention, I took the day off just so I could drop by Monster Parts a bit later and give up more deneros for more bling. Meaningless ramble off, now go enjoy your coffee [coffee]
