I was browsing for some info on a ford flex, and found this:

The OP can't be serious?
"I was performing an oil change today. I drained the oil but I couldn't get the oil filter off. Even my oil filter wrench was not strong enough to get it off and my wife insisted that I change the filter rather than leaving the old one on.
I drove 1/2 mile to the nearest store and completed the oil change in the parking lot rather than continuing to drive with no oil. I could have certainly walked the half mile but I was convinced that 1/2 mile would be safe to drive even with no oil. Now I'm having second thoughts. I suppose the engine was coated with oil and there was probably a bit inside the oil filter. I'm still nervous about it though.
Any chance that I did lasting damage with such a short trip?
So, that was pretty stupid. Won't be doing that again even if it is safe to drive a short distance with no oil."

Now if it was an old Slant 6 I would understand doing that.
That's some funny shit right there

You do mean the art of rhythmic vocalizations in jazz when you say scat right?

Hey look it's Hong Kong Fooey!
Unfortunately not, more so the stuff that would be very disturbing to see and I'm even upset that I know exists.
To return to the original topic, which engines do you think would survive best with such stupidity? How long would the slight film of oil protect it? We should all do some independent testing on members of our fleets and report back the results.
I bet he got the idea from those old Castrol commercials where they would drain the oil in two engines and run them until they died.
D'oh!!

I'd imagine most engines made by Ford or Chevy would run the same with oil as without. ;D

I might still have a mid 80's 2.5 GM four cylinder buried out in my garage somewhere. That one might be good for this test.

You'd have to get it running first to see if it'll still run with no oil...
I worked at a Chevy dealership during high school. One of the mechanics own cars had a cracked head or bad head gasket or something, but it wasn't going to be covered under warranty because the car still ran or something stupid like that. So, he drained the oil, I followed him in our tow truck, and we went out on the highway. It made it 2 or 3 miles before starting to smell like arc welding, and then it quickly seized after that.
Back to the original post - The more I think about it - the more I wish carfax was automated with the engine warning systems, so it could record "stupid" like this.

probably just a matter of time before stupid admissions like that automatically get tracked and come back to bite the dummy that decided to publicly post.
Some years back I worked at Wal-Mart, in the TLE shop, for a summer.
Long story short, never get work done at Wal-Mart. :P
I remember one of the guys (the a stupid one) telling another one of them (the gullible one) to move a large, full ton pickup from one bay to the other after they'd just drained the oil. So... he does. Guess which owner wasn't told about how we just shaved 10,000 miles off their engine's life...
I was only there for a few months, and this wasn't the stupidest thing I saw done while working there. [roll]

The one I had in My 91 S-10 wont send a signal to the distributor until it gets an oil pressure signal.

I'm keeping my opinion to myself about what I really think of all that.
An '89 land cruiser is a clunker?! That engine's got another 400k miles on it easy >:(

theyd run for a while though. lol
Many years ago my school would buy junkyard engines for the students to disassemble, measure, do some machining, then reassemble. The only new parts that went into the engines were head gaskets. The reason why they got head gaskets is, at the semester, we would run them to keep the students honest. Of course, they were run with only the oil the students coated the parts with and no coolant. They would usually thermally seize from overheating first. We would sometimes get them to restart several times before finally seizing.

if i had been in that class, i would have used moly assembly lube.. engine would still have seized but it would have taken a lot longer... :D

there are tons of videos like that, many of the 'clunkers' were even better/newer than the cruiser
To a car guy it feels like killing a farm animal.
To a person it feels like a HUGE waste of resources.

It doesn't just "feel" like that. :P
I hope this list makes folks feel better. I hated seeing that Land Cruiser die needlessly too, but most on this list will never be missed. The replacements may not be enthusiast's dream cars, but they will suck up less fuel and pollute less.
The Top Ten Cash for Clunkers Trade-Ins:

Sure, but the energy to build those new cars over using up something that was already built strikes me as a waste, too.
Don't forget, you cannot increase prosperity by destroying assets.
Also, this program hurt the poor by making very low cost cars less low cost and less available in general. Then there's the damage done to the used parts market, often used by the poor to find less expensive parts for needed repairs.
Cash for Clunkers was (is) a hideous program.

They weren't thinkin with their dipsticks :(
I keep thinking that while a lot of those "clunkers" may not have been great cars they sure are better than a lot of the cars that are on the road. I'm not huge into redistrubtion stuff, but I wonder if some of those couldn't have gone to charity programs to provide for things like single mother/fathers or wheels to help abused women get out of bad relationships... kinda like they do with cell phones. I just know that there are a ton of people out there that those "clunkers" would have been a huge step up for.
I am still waiting for my Cash for Crunkers bong coupon
