Title: Winter Olympics! - Spoilers possible inside
Post by: Rev. Millertime on February 12, 2010, 12:03:55 PM
 [beer]

Who's watching?

Was stoked to find out that NBC is streaming all Hockey live online.... glad I got my HTPC set up and working!

Too bad all the other sports will be tape delayed and crammed with athlete profiles which will leave us with probably 10 minutes of actual coverage of the events.  Hopefully whoever gets the contract for coverage after NBC goes back to the old day of all day and night coverage except for breaks for the local/national news.

Didn't get off to a great start  :(

RIP to the Luger from Georgia who died this afternoon during a practice run.

Very unfortunate about Nodar Kumaritashvili.  Definitely opens the games on a low note.

I also hear they are trucking in snow, BC isn't getting the snowfall they expected.

That said though I do enjoy the winter olympics far more than the summer olympics, I'm a huge hockey fan.

The article I have read are saying they made that track to fast and its near impossible to control your sled at 90 plus mph.

I need to search the internet and find out what the speeds of the previous tracks were.

Apparently there were two injury's because of the fast track right before Nodar Kumaritashvili death =( RIP

Post by: muskrat on February 12, 2010, 02:39:14 PM
everyone interviewed was concerned about the speeds on that track.  some say you could easily hit 90 mph.  supposedly it's the fastest track in the world.

I saw the clip of his wreck on NBC right when the coverage started... Brutal crash.  Sad thing was NBC kept showing it over and over... It's definitely a tragedy and an awful way to start the winter olympics. RIP Nodar Kumaritashvili, your life was too short at 22.

Maybe we should add a spoiler alert to the title?

I am not sure if these are streamed at the same time from EST to PST.

I loved watching the moguls last night.

I think it sucks Apolo is getting more press than Hannah Kearney, the first US Gold Medal winner.

She kicked ass in the moguls.

I know Apolo tied the record for most US Medals, but Hannah got the first gold  [thumbsup]

and

Apolo got lucky as make the beast with two backs those Koreans took each out.

I don't know...part of the reason they took each other out was because Apolo was on their asses pushing hard. Luck is often earned.

Agreed it sucks the girl isn't getting more press though.

Agreed he was on their ass, but still no reason to get taken out and how would they even know that?

I don't know.........I think the kid got incredibly lucky.

but again........that is all part of sports in general. Luck is well......luck. It can go either good or bad.

Definitely went good for this kid  [thumbsup]

Yeah, Hannah got screwed. She threw down one hell of a make the beast with two backsing run.

I hear Shawn White is planning a new trick during the half pipe.

How could he do anything to possibly beat that 1260 flip whatever trick he does?

The men's and women's mogul events were both awesome.  The men's event coverage was crap, though.  At least for the women they showed more than just the Americans and the top four competitors.  I hate that highlight style coverage.  I don't need to hear about the hardships and trials and see the talking heads constantly.  Show the competition - how hard is that?

Don't bother watching it on NBC. It's done in highlight style. Perhaps as the Games progress, they'll start showing events in their entirety.

yeah, you're not gonna get full events on NBC... if you want the full event coverage, track down your sports on the sister networks.

NBC's coverage is a disgrace to the games. More advertising than anything, and the goddamn Dreamworks commercial that they intro about how snowboarding used to be back in prehistoric times just pisses me off now. WTF.

I also haven't found the games at all on any other channel. Oh well. What else is new with US TV...in 10 years even the shows will just be one giant commercial.  [puke]

I have a proposition for the IOC:  death penalty for all ice skaters who fall on a jump.  It saves us the agony of pity-watching the rest of the routine, and listening to the platitudes of the commentators as they try to put a slightly different spin on the "trained for 18 years only to fall on their face in front of the entire galaxy" narrative.  Just a sniper shot to the head, and a zamboni pass over the puddle of blood during commercial.

Sanguine fantasies aside, when are they going to update ice skating?  It is looking and sounding more  like a variety show from the 60s with the spangled one-armed unitards and garish piano music and clown makeup.

I can't wait for the curling!!

Just to add to the pregnant doging about NBC, as a former X-C skier the event I'd love to see more of, is never shown.  Okay so the American's never do well in the nordic events, except jumping, and we never will if we never see it.  I move for  a little less ice dancing, more X-C, no up close and personals, and  less of Bob Kostas interviews (no, make that no Kostas).

As for the death penalty for skaters that fall, I have to say that is a little extreme.  I now live in Texas, death penalty central, and we don't do much ice skating here, but I doubt if we would put a skater to death for falling, but ya never know.  Maybe we could just end their program after they fall  [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

We just saw the Asian and the french guy (turned Italian).  The music was horrible!  How long have they been doing the triples now?  Show us something new!  I realize they're the required moves but it's all the same.

OK ..the Canadian and his musical selection are better.

He didn't even need to make his second run.........and even killed his first score.

I met the kid back in 2004.  Nice kid. That was before he was Shawn White. I had no idea who he was, a friend told me he was going to be the next big snowboarder.

boy was he right.

I have the picture of him with Shawn, I opted out as I don't take pictures with people I don't know.

I gave up a picture with him for one with the Bachelor Jessie Palmer, now ESPN Football analyst.

How can anyone be so fast and good looking at the same time.  I wonder if she is smart too.

Awesome night.  I think what I need is less figure skating and more action sports.

I'm looking forward to seeing Apolo race for another medal.  There is just something I like about that kid and the sport
of short track.  With his attitude he'd be a hell of a linebacker if he was about 6" taller and weighed 150#s more.

Since I'm a fan of the winter biathlon, I was thinking they could try an  indoor variant, combining ice dancing and curling. On the same patch of ice, simultaneously.

The curlers could get extra points for knocking out dancers.   [clap]

I say you put 2-3 ice dance teams on the ice, with 1 nhl defenseman to through hip

South Korea DQ'd in the pairs race, Vonn crashes on the slalom, and two big crashes in womens luge.

I feel soory for that Dutch skater who lost his gold due to his coaches mistake.  :-X

USA had little trouble with the Swiss team...USA ~50 shots on goal with 2 goals...Switzerland 17 shots on goal...

Maybe Canada will get another opportunity to get beat on by the USA.  [cheeky]

Hope so. Though the Canadian team that showed up last night looked a lot tougher. Luongo was solid. We'd have to hope Miller could win the game himself again.

Anyone else think the Koreans was robbed from a gold  ???

At first it looks like a shove but there was no shove and it was a skate trip.

I have seen far worse in this years Speed Skating games that were not called on.

We pissed the Canadians off by beating them at "their" sport. I hope we get to stick it to them again in the gold medal game.

I must be whining.  NBC pays the IOC for rights to broadcast.   Commercials offset NBCs costs.  IOC does what with the money?  I have no idea, and I don't think anyone else does. (http://money.cnn.com/2004/08/19/commentary/column_sportsbiz/sportsbiz/index.htm)  Ad revenue is not going directly to the athletes -and the companies that are advertising and sponsoring are paying out twice, but only some of that money is going to the athletes- if that's what you're getting at.  Now that I think of it, what are you getting at?

USA has 37 medals, which is the most ever in Winter Olympics history. USA won gold in Men's bobsled yesterday and won silver in Mens hockey game today. Germany is in second with 30 medals. Canada has finally started to win medals and is now in third with 26 medals.

The last sentence is my favorite.  ;D

I wouldn't call him a henchman.

I admit I don't watch NHL hockey anymore.

When I did watch there were a few henchmen around.

O'Reilly...Schultz...to name a couple

None of them had the talent that Crosby has.

While I'm sad about the US losing in hockey, at least it was Crosby who ended it (that guy if f*ing amazing!!).  I missed the first period, and almost turned it off in the second when the U.S. puck control and defense was HORRIBLE-they just looked FLAT-no passes were on the tape.  They turned it around about halfway through the 2nd when they started playing a little more physically and it brought them back into the game.

That was a great hockey game....and a fitting end to a pretty good Olympics.  I like winter better than summer (maybe because sliding on ice and snow is faster than people running).
