4. X, See How We Are
5. Faith No More, The Real Thing

one in every crowd...
around here...you're doomed. ;)
Considering the advancement of the portable, large capacity, MP3 player and corresponding digital music industry such as ITunes, Rhapsody, et al., perhaps the concept of the traditional album has become archaic and so last century. I respectfully withdraw the question :)

By using the word...
you're dating yourself.
I honestly can't pick 10...or necessarily know which tunes are on which compilation (notice how I skirted the issue?)
If I did pick 10 I'm almost positive 90% would be from the last century.
It's too hard for me to pick my favorite ten. :)
But they would all fall between 1965 and 1995.
At this current point in my life, it appears as follows...
10. Temple of the Dog - Temple of the Dog
9. Stone Temple Pilots - Thank You
8. Alexisonfire - Alexisonfire
7. Pearl Jam - Ten
6. Rage Against the Machine - Battle for Los Angeles
5. Stevie Ray Vaughn - Greatest Hits Vol. 2
4. Dance Gavin Dance - Downtown Battle Mountain
3. Metallica - Symphony and Metallica Set
2. glassJAw- Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence
1. RUSH - RUSH in Rio Set
Can I put all of the Metallica albums as 1? ;D
Megadeth Greatest Hits
Dire Straights Geatest Hits
Ted Nugent Greatest Hits
Sublime- Sublime- Have to have this one
Kid Rock- Devil Without a Cause
Tom Petty- Greatest Hits
Chilli Peppers- Greatest Hits
See a theme here- I love greatest hits albums. [thumbsup]
Hard to pick just 10...and I'd probably be pissed I left some off when I got there. :P
1. Pearl Jam - vs (better than Ten IMO)
2. Alice in Chains - Dirt
3. Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
4. Penywise - Unknown Road
5. NOFX - White Trash, Two Heebs, and a Bean
6. Tool - Aenima
7. Metallica - Master of Puppets
8. Charlie Hunter - Sounds from the Analog Playground
9. Medeski Martin & Wood - Last Chance to Dance Trance (perhaps) Best of 1991 - 1996 [cheating, I know]
10. The Doors - The Very Best of the Doors [ya...that's cheating again]

1. Pearl Jam - vs (better than Ten IMO) There's no accounting for lack of taste. [laugh] [cheeky]
2. Alice in Chains - Dirt OOOOOOH!! Well done!!!
Hell, I hate these things... but I'll play. Lemme consult my last.fm and see what I listen to most. [cheeky]
So, in only semi-particular order:
1. Jawbreaker - Dear You
2. Sunny Day Real Estate - How It Feels To Be Something On
3. Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand
4. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
5. Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West

7. The Weakerthans - Reconstruction Site
8. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
9. Cursive - Such Blinding Stars For Starving Eyes
10. Fugazi - Red Medicine

3. Further Seems Forever - The Moon Is Down
4. Blink 182 - Enema of the State
5. The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
6. Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E
7. Rush - Test For Echo
8. Glassjaw - Worship and Tribute
9. Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
10. Michael Jackson - HIStory
I didn't want to list film soundtracks, though I have a list for that too:

I have not heard anything of any redeeming quality in many many years, I agree with you. Might move my deadline up to 2000, but definitely nothing in the 21st century has any sort of longevity to it.

"The older I get, the more stuff made recently sucks."
Every decade has good stuff, it just may not be on the radio. You have to be willing to put forth the effort.
*says the guy whose album list features an overwhelming majority of albums released in the 90's* [roll]
Of course there is good music for every decade, I'm not literally saying it is 100% hopeless out there right now, I just heard a group the other day called 'Islands' which was promising and a local guy here named Geoff Earley is really innovative. Things have just gotten too pretentious for my taste lately, and being an audio engineer, I've seen how the technical advances have collapsed the industry I was trying to get into. I do not like the production techniques of popular music on the radio right now, and I also do not like the indie hipsters in the garages. I am wondering where true talent has gone. That's me though, just my opinion, and obviously everyone has their own opinion.
I will say though the lack of new enjoyable music for me has allowed me to look into the past for bands I missed, and I'm finding gems I would have otherwise not found.
Fair enough.
Having been in a band that opted to record using "modern techniques" I can say I'm not a huge fan. Give me live tracking and no tone correction, please. :P

Love a good, tight, garage band performance. [thumbsup]

Now we're talkin [thumbsup]
when rock 'n roll was young, the bands drew from many sources : blues, gospel, r & b, rockabilly, folk, etc.
Now that rock has such a huge compilation to listen to, the bands seem one dimensional. Led Zepplin was the king of mixing in those influences, as well as old rolling stones. Dave Matthews seems like the last big group to mix styles and come up with something innovative (I didn't forget Nirvana. they were great, but before dave).
start the burnfest
Holy God I hate Dave Matthews Band. They're technically interesting, varied, multi-dimensional, talented, and bore the living shit out of me. :P

and some of the bands mentioned bore the shit out of me. But, that's why they make chocolate and vanilla.
ps - for the record, Dave wouldn't make it in my top ten. But I do enjoy it for a change of pace.
So zarn02, do you think rock is getting less dimensional? Maybe it's the record industry that's not willing to risk a lot of money on something different. not sure how it happened, just sayin' I see it.

Fair enough. Not meant as an attack, just a remark. Different strokes, and all that.
I think that the traditional record industry is in its death throes, and right now are trying desperately to survive using an outmoded business model. In order to keep themselves above water they're pushing whatever they think will pull the most sales. Lowest common denominator.
Interesting music comes out, but it's being released by smaller labels (or independently.)
That's my underinformed observation, anyway.
didn't take it as an attack, but thanks for caring :-*
hard to hear those not in main stream music. Pandora's opened a few groups up to me, and a local college radio station (but it tends to be more mellow than I like). 'what are you listening to' has some unusual stuff also.

nope, its a good question.
if I was going to be trapped on a desert island I don't really care what 10 CD's I have. there going to be strategically positioned to help me get attention from passing by search air craft I hope would be looking for me. a MP3 player won't do me any good, especially once the batteries run out.
or.
1. Deftones Adrenaline
2. Tool Lateralus.
3. stevie ray vaugn the sky is crying.
5. Iron Maiden power slave.
6. Metallica Master of puppets.
7. Portishead dummy.
8. led zepplin IV
9. Beastie Boys Ill Communication
10. Rush exit stage left.
In no particular order
Rush - Different Stages
Dream Theater - Live Scenes from New York
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Marillion - Thieving Magpie
The Who - Live at Leeds
Queen - Innuendo
Savatage - Dead Winter Dead
Van Der Graaf Generator - Maida Vale
Peter Gabriel - Secret World Live
Frank Zappa - You can't do that on stage anymore.
I just googled the list I'd want.
I figured this list would give me motivation to escape the island or if others were stuck there too at least I could enjoy pissing them off.
10. EILERT PILARM: Greatest Hits
9. MAE WEST: Way Out West
8. PADDY ROBERTS: Songs for Gay Dogs
7. SAMMY PETRILLO: My Son, the Phone Caller
6. THE NATIONAL GALLERY: Performing Musical Interpretations of the Paintings of Paul Klee

Well I do prefer side two of Santana - Abraxas
I keep an LP of Falco's 'Rock Me Amadeus: Urban Tropical Remix' in my studio. It is the ultimate conversation starter. It just sits where anyone coming out of the voice booth can see it, and I've had everyone from Ozzy Osbourne to Tom Hanks come out and say "a Falco record?! The Urban Tropical Remix?! wtf?"
I wore out the grooves on side 1 of Black Sabbath's Vol 4--those were the days :)
