Title: Help me identify this engine spooey...
Post by: Billyzoom on March 01, 2010, 04:08:30 PM
Hi, all.

I haven't yet posted and will soon do an intro and some pics of my new bike (07 S4rs)...first things first, though.

The bike was virtually stock and super clean, except for a few things...here's one of them.  I don't know what this is, but I'd love to have a sense of how I might get it off to clean up the engine.  It's just on this one section...I tried WD-40, which is the wonder clean-all of my youth, but to no avail...

Thoughts on what it might be and possible solutions to remove it?  I'd appreciate it.

Okay, I don't know how to post pics here...lame.  Let me give a description...

The engine stain is light yellowish brown, and above the front sprocket cover on that case...not super noticeable, but is an abomination to the sanctity of my new beauty.

Love the board!  Appreciate any help, including how to attach pics...

Joel

Sheesh, what a knucklehead...my only question now is that on Photobucket you can click it to enlarge it...here, it seems to stay small which makes it tough to make it out.  Any thoughts on why it comes across so small?

Thanks.

could that possibly be overflow of battery acid?  If it is, I think you are out of luck.

That *looks* like a fuel stain to me.  There has been some discussion on this forum about the weak fuel fittings on the bottom of the gas tank.  The stain looks about where I would expect fuel to drip if there was a leak in the fuel pump flange area.  I would check the fuel fittings at the bottom rear of your tank and see if it looks like there might be a small leak.  When I removed my S4Rs tank, I could see that one of the two fuel connections had a small leak, but it was very small.  You can see the 'out' side is discolored here:

I think that's a fuel stain too.

Thanks, folks.

If I can't get it off and that's the biggest problem in  my life, I'm doing pretty well.  Good thing I bought it to ride and not just look at!

Next question is...

is there a fuel leak?

I checked the bolts earlier, and later today I'll be checking out whether I can identify any leaking...here's to hoping it was something that happened before I bought it and was already fixed.     [beer]

I have a false sense of confidence in my mechanical abilities from successfully removing the emissions canister and chopping the tail over the weekend...maybe this is a divine test...

I would spray some S100 on it while the bike is COLD, let sit for about two minutes, the take a soft brush to it with some water.  That's worked wonders for me in the past.

Looks like there may be excess sealant along the case/cover seam near those bolts.  Do you know if that cover was off?  I'd get the torque setting for those bolts and check them.  Getting the stain off is one thing but you may still have an active leak that needs fixing.

mine looks about the same in some places on my 05 S2R.  Beppo was lazy that day.

+1 on the fuel stain. That's exactly what it is. I have the exact same issue. My tank had warped slightly at the fuel pump flange underneath, and leaked fuel. Now I have those stains all over my engine. Find the leak and take care of it, when I first noticed the leak on my bike it was after a long spirited ride, and the bike was smoking due to the gasoline leaking onto the cylinder heads. Could have been a 'great balls o fire' moment.

try the simple green DILUTED and RINSE VERY WELL afterward

it will eat aluminum if left on.  but it will clean most stuff.

Looks like you need to buff it out.  Try this from Meguiar's, maybe with a soft toothbrush.
