I would spray some S100 on it while the bike is COLD, let sit for about two minutes, the take a soft brush to it with some water.  That's worked wonders for me in the past.

thanks for the tip...I will pick some up tomorrow and give that a shot.  Appreciate it.

Looks like there may be excess sealant along the case/cover seam near those bolts.  Do you know if that cover was off?  I'd get the torque setting for those bolts and check them.  Getting the stain off is one thing but you may still have an active leak that needs fixing.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. +1 on the fuel stain. That's exactly what it is. I have the exact same issue. My tank had warped slightly at the fuel pump flange underneath, and leaked fuel. Now I have those stains all over my engine. Find the leak and take care of it, when I first noticed the leak on my bike it was after a long spirited ride, and the bike was smoking due to the gasoline leaking onto the cylinder heads. Could have been a 'great balls o fire' moment.

try the simple green DILUTED and RINSE VERY WELL afterward

it will eat aluminum if left on.  but it will clean most stuff.
