Had a call from George this afternoon with the question do you want the good news or the bad news. I said well, the good news is it's fixed, the bad news is it cost $$$ to do so. Basically I was right, fixed it is and in the end it was the starter motor causing the problems. So reco-ed starter in and she's back to life. I'll be going out Thursday to collect it so I'll let you know after a ride of course. I can now say I'll be there for our next little outing in April and not on the scooter. On sunday dropped out the starter it was shagged and the sprag gear clutch. Have to take of the alternator cover just to remove the starter motor. and remove the fly wheel to get the sprag clutch out. Got good low klm used parts coming from the US Desmo porsche. There is something to be said of self diagnosing of car/bike problems. You were correct in the starter motor yet it's taken a while for mechanics to find that out. Drawing too much was what George said. quite common with big V twins, the usual cause is a discharged battery, if you don't ride the bike every day use a battery tender, trying to start a bike with a partially flat battery causes much greater draw in amps which not only burns out the brushes but can/will also shag the sprag clutch also. cheap insurance for the starter as well as extending the life of the battery and the reg/rec unit as well. paul. With the starter motor struggling and the noise coming from the sprag bearing the end game is coming up fast. The bike tuned well and with the co's reset it really was running nice.

With the starter motor struggling and the noise coming from the sprag bearing the end game is coming up fast. not necessarily, my post above yours is from experience with the same issue, and mine croaked at about 15K. i've had it since new so i know the klms are correct, and the reason was as stated above, i never start mine unless it's been on the tender overnight and have had no more issues. paul. In Robs case he uses his bike as a daily commuter, the battery voltage and the charging rate checked out ok - I don't know the history of the bike, this is the only time I've seen it.
