Alright Am i allowed to talk about the form?
THeres a BUNCH of things i find hilarious/disrespectful/ and down right wrong on it.
just got mine monday, I still haven't opened it
I agree. I also think that Article 1 tells us that the Fed should count the citizens for purposes of taxation and representation. It doesn't say anythingabout collecting personal data.
"Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons . . ."
Accordingly I simply fill out the number of residents in my house and ignore the rest of the thing.

The census was pretty lame. :-\ Filled it out and sent it in, I can't see much useful information in it.

+1.
Why do they need personal info??
Everything I filled out they already know. Not a big deal.

If they already know, why bother with the census at all??
One of the irritating issues is how much money they spent advertizing and administering this lovely program

I'm legit. They know my info. Other people aren't, that's the info they seek.
Is it a big deal if you fill in all the extra name spaces with fictional illegal-immigrant-sounding names?
Cuz that's what I did.
Just got it today. Might fill it out when I come back from the St. Patty's festivities.

I was going to list every arab friggin name I could think of...
and then I remembered I spent my youth in Saudi....
then I thought about how good I wouldn't look in a black hood, black socks and a diaper
getting water-boarded in Gitmo or some new secret hellpit

I don't understand all the consternation. I've had magazine subscriptions ask for more personal information.
Call me niave... I don't see what the big deal is. I am filling it out and mailing it in.

I simply think my time would be better spent sitting on my deck staring at the ocean. Or drinking. Or riding. Or riding on my deck while looking at the ocean and drinking a beer. Plus I simply don't know if I'm 1/27th Cherokee or not and don't want to try to figure it out. No drama. Just a waste of time.

While not filling this is may sound like a fun thing, my understanding is that they will send a representative to collect this information at a much higher cost if you don't respond. Think mail response vs. person coming to your door. Most already complain about government waste and higher taxes. Plus, if there is no accurate count of people it effects the amount of tax dollar accounted for by your state, th number of representatives your state gets, etc. Like Nike says "Just do it."

Come to think of it, that is the first time I have been to the post office in months.......
my understanding (and i am the first to admit that i dont understand jack shit) is that the census plays a large part in how federal dollars come back to the various states.
with that it mind, given that i am moving (again) to a different state in the next few months....cant decide whether to toss the paperwork or not...
does anyone realizes how much they spent on advertising alone for this crap? [bang] Oh and they are about 25% over budget already. ridiculous!

But it is a constitutional requirement. I read in the paper today that the $85 million spent on sending out notices that the census form will arrive will increase the response rate by 6 to 12%, thus saving up to $500 million.

Wow. That's retarded. I didn't get my pre-letter for some reason, but I did manage to wrestle the census out of the mailbox and fill it out without throwing it away. But I haven't mailed it yet.
It would probably make more sense to send out a letter a week later that says, hey, dumbass, remember that thing that said census on it that you got a week ago. Yea, so fill the damn thing out and mail it back.

I filled it all in and sent it. Blockbuster has more info on me...

The "race" question was bothersome. I checked other and wrote in HUMAN. They use the race data to allocate funds to specific minority groups, but if you're talking $$$, class rather than race should probably be used. They get that info by April 15 every year.

I can't say any thing more with out crossing the forums political line.
Let's see how I can word this without it becoming very political very fast... [roll]
The only part of the census authorized by the constitution is a simple head count. This isn't a political opinion, this is a legal fact.
One might be bothered by the information collected because it has been used for unsavory purposes in the past. Example: Used to find people of Japanese descent during WW2 so that they might be "interred." And as for the remark about Blockbuster having more information, Blockbuster doesn't threaten large fines for not filling out boxes on their membership card.
Besides, simply because they're on the public payroll doesn't mean it's any of their damn business. :P
i can get fined for not giving them my name and phone number? :o
i missed that part of the instructions.

Without a name how would they know who to fine?
I guess they could call you...
;D
I was reading a magazine column by some guy who had entered some lame drawing and used fake names and his real address, but he left the phone number blank. He got a call from an Army recruiter wanting to talk to Mr Joe Strummer about possibly joining the Army. If the Army has been purchasing mailing lists as leads, maybe a more detailed census could save money? I don't know. I don't have a dog in this fight. I'm pretty ambivalent. That race question did bug me though.
just did mine this morning.
was tempted to add the cat...

i looked up my great grandpa's census information now that it's public (72 year rule)
they asked how many, names, ages, race and origin (where born). i saw his signature (that was cool) as they used to go door-to-door with a log book and everyone put a single name on each line.. there was his name, granma's, then my grandparents and great uncles (all 11 of them).. and after each name, age, race, and place of birth.
big deal.

Good point...I was able to trace a big chunk of my family's dreadful tour across America for over 300+ years because the ancestors usually allowed someone to identify them before they were run out of town into the next wilderness....I figure I owe the same for anyone down the road in my family who tries to back-track to figure out why they are so incredibly farked-up :)

LOL....not too far from the truth....we made the newspapers a lot in the 19th and early 20th centuries...
