Bullet points:
- Last night a giant boom was heard in the Portland area
- It was enough to rattle windows, shake houses
- Police and fire dispatched, couldn't find the cause
- Military and aircraft personnel both claim it wasn't military or aircraft related
- As of this morning, still no one seems to know what caused it
- Boom was heard as far as towns 20 or so miles away
So let's hear your theories about what this could have been. It's making me a little nervous, I must admit, but I've seen too many doomsday/cloverfield type movies. Still, I'm getting an emergency pack together. Some comments in the article say it sounded similar to the Mt. St. Helens boom right before it exploded it's top.
Military isn't telling the truth...or doesn't know what one of their pilots did. ;D
Meteorite would have been tracked.
Volcano would have data.
Bomb would have caused damage.
You live in one of the most active seismic regions in the world...with active volcanoes to boot. Always having an emergency pack at home is an extremely good idea...loud boom or not. 3 days of food and water is the general rule...5 days is better. :)
My bad. I didn't know it was gonna be that loud or I'd have moved it farther away.
;D
You'd think this would be reported, but maybe? http://www.terraresearch.net/articles/earthquakeboom_article1_file.html (http://www.terraresearch.net/articles/earthquakeboom_article1_file.html)

+1 aliens.
Another interesting twist...
Nothing was heard or felt out here on the mountain, about 40 miles from where the reports were.
Personally, I like the "earthquake boom" theory. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/booms.php (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/booms.php)
Or maybe zombie gas explosion.

given to humans by the aliens
It wasn't me....I live nowhere near there. ;)
Bean burrito.
I like the earthboom theory. Kind of interesting.
Or it was the super secret Mach 5 spy plane on the way to take pictures somewhere.
Here's what they are saying was the culprit: http://www.kptv.com/news/22990857/detail.html (http://www.kptv.com/news/22990857/detail.html)
Pipe bomb. Must have been a big bomb, the boom was heard for miles. It was reported as being heard from Vancouver, WA all the way to Happy Valley, OR. That's about 300 30 miles. Sorry for the typo.

There was no way to know how the microbes collected by the Mars probes would mutate when passed between the albino ESP warriors and the mole people army unless they were exposed in the actual tunnels. So things got out of hand. Who could have predicted the mutated microbes would start producing bioluminescent chemicals that made the mole people army paranoid and stabby. Quit blaming the military. Why do you hate America?

I got really drunk last night. Hope I wasn't in the Portland area.
Don't really see how it could have been heard that far away, even with cloud cover and an embankment.

Put the magneto back in the Bonneville and it was out of time. The boom was my knee hitting the handlebars. Ask me how I know this.

I know right?! Doesn't that sound convenient? I know I may be crazy, but in all the doomsday movies it's the crazies that saw it coming first and the crazies that survive the longest. [laugh]
A bomb so big it rattled windows and was heard 20 miles away would have been seen. Nobody saw anything.
It was the Large Hadron Collider, when they ran it today the sound was heard elsewhere yesterday.

Agreed. I still say sonic boom...but the earthquake boom theory could very well be it too. I hadn't ever heard of those before.

probably not far from the truth. Clocks don't keep very good time around me for some odd reason. My Blackberry gains a minute a month, my alarm clock gains about a minute or two a day and my car radio will randomly set itself back 10 or 15 minutes every once in awhile.

Reminds me of the following from "Waiting for Guffman".
UFO Abductee: "They took me off into a separate room; I seen 'em takin' different people off; different ones of us off in separate rooms and put me on a big white table and uh the guy that took me in there - to examine me I guess - he probed me and then I was in there I bet more than three or four hours, in that room, being probed and at one time or another these different ones of 'em came in, four or five or six of 'em at different times, and all of 'em probed me, uh, not all at once, you know, individually. Later on, years later, now, even still, uh, it's a funny thing - it happened on a Sunday and every Sunday about the time I was taken on board that ship I - find I have no feelings in my buttocks."

return to the Large Hadron Collidor for unbending.
And for the op, I can't see how a pipe bomb that big could ever go unnoticed.
They really expect us to buy that it was a pipe bomb?
Maybe a sewer pipe sized pipe bomb :D

Many people are saying that around here. It just seems too convenient. "Hmmm, sounds like it originated in this area. *dig dig dig* OH LOOK! A giant hole with some *toss* pipe bomb remnants!! Mystery solved."
Is Hoffa in there too?
;D
