I've wanted to build one for a long time, and now that I have a three week old baby, I feel like I have the time and money to invest into this project. Or I'm insane.
Either way, this is a project that I've been researching and I'd love to do. Anyone have any personal experience they'd like to share?
"...and now you have a three week old baby" you have time???
what the hell, do you own a tardis? when my boy was three weeks old, i didn't have time to take a dump.
Reminds me of the 'I love Lucy' episode where Fred and Desi try to build one in Desi's back yard...you can guess how it went. [laugh]

I'm voting for the "insane" choice. [cheeky] No experience here, but just wanted to wish you good luck with the project. :)
I grew my beard when I was home for 6 weeks' parental leave with my son after he was born. I couldn't find time to shave!
Yeah, I think we got a good one, she's easy as can be. She only cries when she's hungry (and not much then) and she sleeps great, especially at night. We get a good five hours of sleep in one stretch every night, and usually only get up twice a night (if we want to sleep in, sometimes only once). So maybe I'm not as insane as the voices in my head say?
Of course, managing a wine shop does keep me well stocked on good wine and beer, so maybe I'm not insane, just drunk. Weird. I don't feel drunk...
If your going to make a built in brick oven, you better make it so it doubles as BBQ grill to!!!! Good job with the kid! One of my friends had a baby back nov, and her husband was a zombie for about 4 months. Missed the whole football season and then some.

[laugh]I just watched last nights episode of doctor who ;D
I have a friend who grew up in Rome and insisted on building his own backyard pizza oven. It makes the most amazing 'za- and I don't even like Roman style pizza.

Pizza is like sex. When it's good, it's really good, when it's bad its still pretty good. (Yogi Berra)

Actually since a pizza oven is used for food prep, it is legal to use even on no burn days, as long as its not commerical use.
There are several free plans and internet groups concerning out door pizza ovens, I'm going to build one in my back yard...
they can cost anywhere from really cheap (200) to really expensive.
I agree with He Man, it better double as a BBQ.

That actually is the plan, I just haven't gotten around to designing something that would work as both. Those pizza ovens are pretty particular; the dome has to be a certain dimension in relation to the floor, the door height has to be 63% of the height of the dome, the walls have to be at such a thickness with this type of brick or this thickness with this other type of brick...lots of little variables.
Plus, I want a design that doesn't look like Homer Simpson built it.
It'll be good though.

Classic episode.
That sounds pretty complicated. Good luck and I look forward to pics.
Hey at least I've made an educated determination!! I've put many, many, many slices of the 'za in my big, fat pie hole and from many parts of the world. I even tried in Tokyo but struck out as they seem to have an affinity for wiggly/squishy foods still having occular organs (or worse) for which I have zero compulsion. My first pizza- Pepperoni at a place called By The Bucket. I was 6 years old. It has been my favorite food ever since and I'll stand by my tastebuds as PWT as they are. Hmph! [laugh]

+ a whole bunch. [thumbsup]
Forno Bravo supposedly makes a really good oven. Their kits are pricey but they give out free brick DIY plans (probably to scare you into buying a modular kit)

The pre-cast kits start around $2,000...you can probably build the brick one for $200
Next year I plan on building the brick oven..my wife thinks I'm nuts....but good pizza in Indianapolis is a very rare find
