wow, their smart
[clap] [clap] [clap]
smart or dumb, you gotta give them something for it. i mean, what if they got it? could you imagine?
Aim high, because if you miss, you'll still be, uh, gunned down by a frickin' warship.
I dunno-doesn't have the same ring as the original.
The more I read about this the more I think these pirates are just huge idiots. They were doing fine and making a lot of money when they were keeping it low key. Now the more oil of ours they steal and even attacking our warships is just going to wake the sleeping giant. They might they the ocean hides them but if we get unmanned drones and spy planes looking for them, they are in trouble.
They are going to end up ruining a good thing for themselves.

that is a scary thought if they would have got it, it would have been a little harder to get back than any commercial boat
wake the sleeping giant, and then what?
these peoples' lives are SHIT. they are worthless, which is why they keep popping up. take a guy who makes the equivalent of $1 for a year of shoveling shit and give him an RPG and tell him he can make $100 grand with one ship.
He will do it.
that is the problem.
meanwhile, a single projectile from the warship in the article above costs $100 grand.
give me a warship vs an unlimited supply of those pirates each with an AK or an RPG, and I'll take the latter.

Thoughts of Steven Seagal and Under Siege come to mind...........
Well I always ask what drives someone to these sorts of levels of desperation...
why strapping C4 and ball bearings onto yourself and detonating in crowds seems viable....
why attacking ships from dingy's seems to make sense....
here is some interesting reading....trust me I am no bleeding heart but I hate getting half-truths and BS spun at me

interesting, why would USN disarm it?
Was gonna say...most WARSHIPS put to sea prepared to go to WAR at any time. Wouldn't make much sense for the GUIDED MISSILE frigate to be in marginally friendly waters unarmed for defense...
Just sayin'...

$$$$$
The missile it was designed to use (SM1) was retired, cost too much to upgrade to newer version or to a gun mount. It never had a "big gun". The ship's themselves are slowly being retired. Until then it's counter drug/pirate ops and missile sponge for the carrier battle group.

Guided Missile Frigate that doesn't carry missiles. ;) But I agree that they go to sea ready to defend themselves.
Well,I wouldn't call the 50mm Vulcan a small gun either. I mean I have watched the 30mm Vulcan on the A-10 cut T62s into scrap iron in seconds...methinks tthe 50mm Vulcan can do similar things to most anything short of a cruiser or carrier...

In all likelihood, they would have never figured out how to do a damn thing with it. Have you seen the level of complexity that goes into operating a sea-going warship?

The vulcan on this vessel is a CIWS system, which stands for Close In Weapon System. Basically a last ditch attempt to take down incoming cruise missiles, and it fires 20mm shells.
is a 20mm shell big?
what sort of building/house/boat would it take out?

building? most house? all boat? quite a few... But it's more complicated than that. Do a quick google for M61 Vulcan. The main thing with that weapon system is its alarming rate of fire. They can put out something like 6000 rounds per minute.

Sure do. The older ones used the 20mm version which is basically an M61 with integral tracking radar/systems attached. Some of the newer platforms have gone to a multi-barreled 25mm bushmaster set up.

Isn't that depleted uranium?
Anyway as it was explained to me on the Constellation (CV64) each gun has to be programmed as to it's firing window, lest they track an object to a point where part of the ship is in the way. They have a tendency to shoot off any part of the ship that gets in the way of the target.

And they most likely don't use depleted rounds for that weapon system. That sort of material is best used for punching through armor (think tank), not necessarily for taking out aircraft.

Now that's what I am talking about. Nothing quite like the sight of an A-10 turning in on its terminal run to take out some talibaddies that have been harassing you for the last couple of hours. Well, now that I think about it, maybe
one other aircraft has close to the same effect. [evil]

You are correct. The CIWS fire DU rounds. Very bad for the target...
Yea, that's what the Gunners mates told me. DU rounds... When those things fire it shakes that whole part of the ship.

I read an interview once from an A-10 Pilot that when he fired the Avenger Cannon (20mm, right?), it felt like the plane was moving backwards......
That's some serious shit.

The GAU-8 is the 30mm, six barreled cannon, that the A-10 was designed around. And by designed around I actually mean designed around. Take a look at the front of one of these aircraft and you will notice that the centerline of the cannon's bore is the exact center of the airframe and the front landing gear is offset to allow this. The aircraft was designed like this simply so the main cannon could be aimed "point and click style".
Also, the gun itself creates more thrust than the two engines are capable of at full throttle. So in effect, a pilot could stall the aircraft out quite easily if the cannon had enough ammo in the hopper to sustain a long enough burst.

How many rounds can the A-10 hold for the Avenger Cannon?

Around 1200. Not much when you consider it spits them out at a rate close to 3900 rounds per minute.

Whoa, that isn't a lot of rounds..........
I guess you use sparingly
Don't need all that many. They usually only engage targets with quick bursts of about half a second or so. Plus, according to the original design theory, these aircraft were designed to fly/fight in what is probably the most hostile airspace available. The cockpit is encased in a thick tub of titanium armor, but even then the pilots don't have the longest expected lifespan when shit well and truly hits the fan.
