Title: Unsure what to do about my clip-ons... (updated, job completed w/pics on pg2) Post by: eesnas on April 05, 2010, 07:24:15 PM Ok, so here's some pics of my current setup, sorry for the HDRs but it's the best look at the bars I have. There's a point to this, not trying to show off my photo skills (or lack of) or my bike but looking for some advice and figure it helps that everyone gets a clear look:
(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n193/tonyranieri/Post%20Mods/Foliage200_1_2_tonemapped.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n193/tonyranieri/Post%20Mods/Foliage037_8_9_tonemapped.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n193/tonyranieri/Post%20Mods/IMG_1821.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n193/tonyranieri/Post%20Mods/JJ_Duc_sm.jpg) So, here's the deal... I love the way the low bars look, it's really exactly what I was going for when I had it all worked out in my mind, of course now my body seems to want something higher. It's been more frequent lately that I am riding and I just feel like a bit higher would be a hell of a lot more practical, especially considering it's a 620. Sometimes I love it and others I just feel like it's too much of a reach. I'm 6ft and 235lbs, if I were 10 lbs heavier or 2 inches shorter I don't know if I could even ride it like this, I don't plan to get fatter or shorter but does anyone here agree these bars might be a bit too low for practical street use? It's a real pain too because I hate to spend $180 for 2" rise versions of what I have but there is something to be said about the potential added comfort. I'm a bit worried about line clearance, but I am sure there's a way to get it to work. So I guess I don't have anyone but you guys to bounce this off, should I tough it out a bit on the comfort and stick with what I have? Or should I be a bit more practical and get the 2" rise clip ons (http://www.woodcraft-cfm.com/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=18061 (http://www.woodcraft-cfm.com/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=18061))? FWIW the 2" does not look like it's a true 2 inches, more like 1.5"- just judging by the pics it looks like the hole for the actual bar takes up some of the rise, this is good because 1.5" is about what I think will look and feel pretty good. Title: Re: Unsure what to do about my clip-ons... Post by: eesnas on April 05, 2010, 07:40:12 PM Oh wow... I just found out the Woodcraft store or company is not too far from me... I might just bypass shipping and ride there next week to see how they fit. Part of my hesitation is I don't want to buy the wrong stuff and then get stuck with it if it's a bad fit. Hopefully at the store I can see the different risers and figure it out in person. Feel free to still chime in though, curious if others have had similar issues between preferences of looks versus comfort...
Title: Re: Unsure what to do about my clip-ons... Post by: MAXdB on April 05, 2010, 08:56:53 PM sounds to me like you'll be much happier with a little rise to your clipons.. i say go for it.. I doubt the 1.5/2 inch rise will even change the look of your bike dramatically. good luck. LOVE those pics, btw.. bike looks amazing!

Post by: transplant on April 06, 2010, 01:08:28 AM When my clip-ons started bothering my back I looked around for a way to bring them up and back a bit to ease my discomfort. I took my stock bars, cut them and installed.
The price was right and it's really comfortable for me. (http://www.tallyriders.com/bars.jpg) (http://www.tallyriders.com/bars1.jpg) George Title: Re: Unsure what to do about my clip-ons... Post by: He Man on April 06, 2010, 01:33:29 AM thats nuts i like it!
try buying a cycle cat pair. they have 3.5" rise and you can move them up and down the fork to your liking, Title: Re: Unsure what to do about my clip-ons... Post by: Punx Clever on April 06, 2010, 07:56:33 AM Epic... just epic
Title: Re: Unsure what to do about my clip-ons... Post by: NoisyDante on April 06, 2010, 10:10:43 AM I have Woodcrafts, gotta say they were the easiest things to install.
Nice bike, I was wondering how dark green would look with a black frame. Title: Re: Unsure what to do about my clip-ons... Post by: stopintime on April 06, 2010, 10:45:04 AM The George-ons are brilliant [thumbsup]
I bet you could also do that with fork clamps mounted under the triple, thus keeping true to the George-ons. Title: Re: Unsure what to do about my clip-ons... I'm in the market for a new set of clip ons and I want them on top of the triple!

I'm in the market for a new set of clip ons and I want them on top of the triple! Nope, they are under the triple. The multi clips position the bars in front of the triples while the monster clips position the bars farther back. I'm 6'4" so the extra distance is a good thing. Title: Re: Unsure what to do about my clip-ons... Post by: The Bearded Duc on April 06, 2010, 12:57:42 PM P.S.
Sorry about the treadjack... Title: Re: Unsure what to do about my clip-ons... I'm in the market for a new set of clip ons and I want them on top of the triple! Yes, I dropped the tree just enough to fit the clamps on top. I was concerned the handling would get twitchy, decreasing a small amount of trail like that, but it actually handled even better. George Title: Re: Unsure what to do about my clip-ons... Post by: Billyzoom on April 06, 2010, 07:00:58 PM Even if you WERE showing off your bike, you'd have good reason. Your bike is very nice.
There is no way I could ride a bike with bars that low, though it looks great. I think you could easily get bars that are significantly higher and more comfortable, yet have a similar look to the average onlooker. Ultimately you bought it to ride I assume, so whatever makes it more pleasurable to ride and enjoyable is what would drive my decision. Good luck. I actually think I just need a bit of a rise, it's not that it's massively uncomfortable it's just that I know a little bit higher would be lot more comfortable. My Suburban Machinery bars were just about perfect, maybe a tiny bit taller than I need, which is why I am thinking 2" rise under triple will be good. For some reason I really like the design on the Woodcraft stuff so I will probably get something from them next week. Title: Re: Unsure what to do about my clip-ons... Post by: eesnas on May 05, 2010, 04:28:53 AM Here's what I ended up doing...
2" rise Woodcrafts, do not look much taller but the comfort is so much better for me now. Such a subtle adjustment and a huge improvement, I can ride much more relaxed now. I managed to find some pics that should give a good idea of the before/after difference. You can see now the bars are the same height as the top triple, rather than completely below it, for some reason this small chance made a big difference in comfort. Before and after pics... Before: (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n193/tonyranieri/Post%20Mods/IMG_4079.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n193/tonyranieri/Post%20Mods/IMG_1819.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n193/tonyranieri/Post%20Mods/IMG_1818.jpg) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After: (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n193/tonyranieri/Post%20Mods/IMG_4094.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n193/tonyranieri/Post%20Mods/IMG_4093.jpg) (http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n193/tonyranieri/Post%20Mods/IMG_4097.jpg) Bike is much more practical now, also added an aluminum flywheel which turned out to make a big improvement too!
