Title: Ca. progressive insurance customers, has your rates sky rocketed this year?
Post by: danaid on April 20, 2010, 08:22:09 PM
Today I received my renewal bill in the mail from Progressive insurance and I was hoping to see a lower rate from the previous year, as has happened for the two previous years, but instead I read in horror that my rate rose from $532 year to $944 for this year!  :o  :'(  [puke]
This will be my third year with progressive, I have no tickets or accidents, married, safety course, 23 yrs driving experience(they use total years driving auto+motorcycle)etc. basically everything a good customer could have! What is also funny is that this rate is with a good driver and customer loyalty discount!
So I called the customer service to find out what was the reasoning for the steep rise in my rate. The customer service lady was understanding, apologetic and said only that everyones rates went up because of the cost of doing business went up this year. I than got very up set and told her my first year was $ 662 year, last year was $532, now this year $944, almost 50% increase in a year!
I stayed on the phone with her for about an hour trying to change the coverage to try to get the rate lower and finally lowering the annual mileage 2000 to 1000 miles the rate went down to $700 a year. So I have until May 11 to find a lower rate insurance company, hopefully this isn't happening to everyone across the board. I would like to hear some feed back on your rates and the companies you use here in California.   :-\

Sorry for the vent, but I'm cheap and that extra money paid to insurance co. cuts into my new summer jacket fund.

 Dan

I say this as much as possible.  If you can get to a State Farm Agent try them.  By far the cheapist I've seen and I know a few duc riders who use them.

Even state farm rates have increased though i think it is the same across the board  :'(

Could this be pre-emptive to Prop 17?

I have State Farm and I pay about a third of what you do and I got a ticket from last summer.  Sounds like you need to get rid of Progressive.

In the midwest here, but I had statefarm for years with my car and duc... when I first put insurance on the bike it was $52/month, this year it went up to $89  :o because of legislative change... i told them to pound sand.   Now with progressive for $23/month.  [thumbsup]

Same thing happened to me, went from $500 to $900.  I called them up and they said they were loosing money on Moto policies so the rates went up.

I shopped around and found Geico to be the cheapest.  Event switched my cars over to them and saved around $300 a year.

it's all arbitrary guys. they raise your rates because they can. it's a racket.
my RENTER'S insurance went $60.
I have no more coverage than i did. I haven't moved. Nobody has moved in.
Why then?
Because. That's why.

+1

I have Progressive for my car and my payment went up $50 a month, per car, on last renewal. I've had the same coverage for over 2 years with three cars on the same policy and no accidents or tickets.

The reason they told me.....changes in legislation
The reason I deduced on my own.....friggin bullcrap

Bottom line, there's nothing we can do about rate hikes. The last thing I want to do every year, or 6 months, is call every insurance company looking for a lower rate. Besides, they almost always take a larger "first" payment and I can think of better things to spend that money on than a new insurance policy.

Im with statefarm (Utah) and i pay $92 a month for my Duc, Truck and renter insurance. (I think the break down is - $9 renters, $65 Truck, $18 Duc.)

I have no idea why my insurance is so cheap, but I'm not complaining.  [thumbsup]

Thanks guys for all the info. and insight.
After reading the first page of this thread I decided to call progressive back to try and reduce my rate further. Well, I was able to bring the price down to $535 year from $900, than $700 yesterday!
I took the DMF member advice and called State farm and than Geico to get a quote, comparing apples to apples, progressive does offer a lot with its coverage.
The best State farm could do is $ 608.52 year with no road side coverage or free accessory coverage, the agent said the rate would be lower if I also included auto and home, which I use AAA.
The winner was Geico! I was quoted $286 year, $23. month,  [clap]  with road side assistance. for the same coverages as Progressive, minus the $3000 included accessory coverage Progressive included. Geico gives only $500. So I signed up and gave the agent my credit card Number.

Thanks for all the help,  [thumbsup]

  Dan

California is known to be a sue happy state along with the high population and cost of living in general, causing rates to be usually higher than most other states.

Crime rate, type of vehicle, value of vehicle, zip code vehicle is stored, credit history, miles driven, coverages selected. Those affect the rate. Lawsuit rate, population, and cost of living don't factor much (if at all) into insurance rates. I raised my coverages to reflect the fact that if my wife totals her car with a like car the property damage cost will likely be over 100K, I pay a bit more but know I'm covered.

i have seen my insurance rates drop every year since i turned 25. and thats with three different companies.

i use state farm for auto and home owners, 'cause they are the only ones who will insure my rottie. but i have always used progressive for my bike...just cant find a better rate anywhere (that i qualify for.)

USAA. No better option if you qualify.
USAA is getting out of the Motorcycle insurance business.  They will insure current customers, but aren't taking any new customers.  They have raised their rates considerably on their remaining motorcycle customers.  Call them and they will admit you can get cheaper rates elsewhere.  They will even refer you on to another insurance company like Progressive.  They want to keep your auto business though.

The other thing that I wonder when insurance threads come up is, what kind of coverage are you all taking about?

I pay $500 with Geico for:

Bodily Injury Liability      $100,000/$300,000 Non Deductible
Property Damage Liability    $100,000 Non Deductible
Uninsured Motorist & Underinsured Motorist    $30,000/$60,000 Non Deductible
Comprehensive    $500 Ded.
Collision    $500 Ded.

Unless we are comparing apples to apples (as far as coverage is concerned) then the disparity in rates will always come up.

I have USAA for the house and car but they directed me to Progressive for the bike.  I wish that they would have covered that as we have been very happy with them.  That being said, my progressive bill dropped from $420 to $285.  Midwest here, so I am sure that plays into it a bit.

None of the above is true for California based customers.

I was in Florida at the time.  I called because my rates had gone up and that is the story they gave me.  Maybe it was just a Florida business decision, but I've heard people in Virginia say the same thing about USAA.  You might want to check your rates.

I just went through this rate hike last month! They moved my post though :( Anyway, I was with State Farm and when my renewal came......BAM 40% rate increase.  I was pissed, same thing perfect driving record no acc. no tickets.  I called and they told me sorry that it is what it is.  I then called progressive and they gave me a rate that was lower than my original State Farm rate.  I signed up with them right away. I then called State Farm to cancel and they panicked.  I said it was absurd that they raise my rates like that and if they wanted to keep me with them they would then have to come in much lower than Progressive.  15 minutes later my total insurance for the year is $278.00 for full coverage, uninsured motor, under insured motor, $1000 deduct.

No need. I pay less then $33 a month on a 08 Hyper for 1M/300K/1M coverage with a $50 deductible. I also had no bike for a year and when I reupped with a bike I asked about the rumors. They said it was true for other states but not CA. Too much business here.

That is a great rate, especially with that low deductible.  I guess it all comes down to business decisions as to what state they choose to do business in.

Unless we are comparing apples to apples (as far as coverage is concerned) then the disparity in rates will always come up.

I paid $506  Progressive:
California

Bodily Injury Liability                    $100,000 each person/$300,000 each accident
Property Damage Liability             $50,000 each accident
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist    $100,000 each person/$300,000 each accident
Comprehensive                                         $500 Ded.
Collision                                                  $500 Ded.

Uninsured Motorist Coll. Ded.        $500 waived
Accessory Coverage                    $3000

I had one no fault accident, when a mercedes was hungry, and I had one traffic ticket for speeding on appeal (which I since won)...

I agree with arai_speed. If you don't mention what you are covered for and where you are, the information is less useful. The only thing one assumes generally is that the majority of you are under the age of 55.

Oh, I also got that policy renewal that doubled in cost too...

The best coverage so far was the guy with the 08' Hyper 1M/300k/1M with a $50 ded. in CA pays $32 a month.

 Property damage, $50,000
 Uninsured/underinsured, $30,000/$60,000
 Towing
 Deductibles $1,000

 Premium $257 year.
