Title: Tipping Motorcycle Shipper
Post by: ZOSO on April 23, 2010, 08:29:53 AM
I am receiving delivery of a bike next week from a commercial motorcycle shipper and (assuming the bike is unharmed) I would like to tip the driver.
Any suggestions on what a reasonable/borderline generous without being stupid tip would be? (1200 mile trip if it matters).
Thanks in advance!

when i bought mine from new mexico, they said it would take a week to get it to chicago.  three weeks later it showed up, and i still payed full price for shipping.  he didnt get a extra dime out of my pocket TIP stands for to insure promptness, i dont think and extra two weeks was very prompt.

I can understand your situation.
However, what prompted my post was a call from the shipper scheduling delivery, early.
I was quoted 7-10 days shipping, they got it to me in 4 days!
Worth a tip for sure (again, assuming it's unharmed ;- )

How much do you have in mind?

it's a LONG ride.
dont have anything in mind yet.

A) How far is it being shipped?

B) What are you paying total?

I'd say somewhere in the neighborhood of 10% is reasonable without being gratuitous. (See what I did there? Gratuity/gratuitous? Oh, make the beast with two backs this, I don't have to impress you people.)

Honestly, tho, I'd say $20-50. Anything less than $20 for something like this is almost insulting.

maybe its a culture thing, but your already paying him to do something. why are you tipping him, unless he helps you uncrate it and hauls away the crate? if he just pulls up drops hte bike in front of your house. then i wouldnt tip, even if he was nice about it.

i generally dont tip unless he lives of the tip money, or theres something extra being done, laborwise.

They typically don't crate them-you just have a driver who rolls it on, secures it, and rolls it off to you.

Tipping the person who treated your stuff carefully to ensure it got where it was going undamaged is good practice.

If he *only* gets paid by pick ups and drop offs, he's going to be far less motivated to take care of your goods.

i agree with that 100%....but ZOSO isnt the shipper. hes just receiving the product.

edit: wait did ZOSO  pay and hire the guy for shipping? if so, my apologies. If hes comming from far away, $40 sounds appropriate, $20 if its  close by, like Florida to NY.

Tipping is way out of control. I don't tip anyone anymore other than wait staff and bar tenders. Once the gimps at Starbucks started putting a tip jar on the drive through window sill, I had enough.

I agree, if shippers need to make more money start charging more. I am paying for a service at a specified price, that is all.

Also to the OP it really is cool that the shipper got it to you in 4 days but what if you planned to be out of town because it was supposed to be 7-10 days. Then what?

i digress.

When I bought my bike off Ebay it was $540 to ship it. I forget what company I used at the time but they were great, no issues with it but I never felt the need to tip. I mean, they work on a grid, the truck only rolls out if it's full of bikes and heads towards it's destination region, all they do is ship bikes, it wasn't cheap, and to me the driver was simply doing his job= delivering my bike. Similarly I don't tip the Fed Ex guy either. I don't think a driver will turn down cash if you hold it out to him so I guess it's all up to you how you want to spend it.

With that said, I have tipped traditional moving companies generously but that's because they lugged my furniture for several hours. With the bike shipping the guy opened the back of the truck and I did most of the work to wheel the bike out, it was more like a package delivery than anything else...

If I meet a motorcycle stripper, I'll do my best to give her a tip.

Those were my sentiments as well.  I paid to have my bike shipped, and while the truck driver was a nice guy, I helped him get the bike off the back of the truck.  If it's moving guys, and they are literally picking up the boxes and packing and unloading the truck from/to my house, then I'd tip.  But for the bike, he was just delivering and I don't think that warrants a tip.

IMO.

I think the shipper would rather get couple cold beer than getting some tips !
ha , great info. I think I won't tip the driver the amount I had in mine originally then.
