I'm about to do my first oil change for my Monster 696 and was wondering what oil and oil filter to use. Also I'm on a budget so what are some good inexpensive ones?
Thanks
Mobil 1 motorcycle oil is what I use.
I use the 20W-50 for the Ducatis but I put this stuff in the Honda:

If you want to be cheaper than that, there are some Castrol products specifically for motorcycles that work well enough.
Hi-Flo filters are the cheapest on the market and a lot of people say they are just as good as OEM and K&Ns.
I look for sales on mobil fully sythentic and pick up a 6pack. good for half the year.
Genuine Ducati oil filters aren't all that expensive and you know that they're the best quality. I won't even consider anything else to save two or three bucks.
Sometimes the K&N go cheap and I get them then.
I am using the fully synthetic Motul 7100 as my dealer said the so called (labelled) Shell fully synthetic was not really fully synthetic and they won't sell it as such. This backs up the Oil According to George thread. I use the Mobil MX4T when I can find it.
the money you will save buying "budget" items is so minimal its not worth it. You have a Ducati, its going to cost you more...bottom line. If you cannot afford to own a Ducati trade it for something that takes less maint. just my .02
K&N filters and Shell Rotella Full synthetic from Walmart. If you can run it for 50,000 miles in a diesel you can run it for 2,000 in a Duck. [thumbsup]

$19 @ the local dealer. In my view that's expensive, certainly so if one changes it hot and often. The gripe that dealer filters are needlessly expensive is a valid complaint.
hiflos are about 12 a pop if you buy 4 at a time.
i'm wondering who makes the ducati or oem filters for any car/motorcycle, afterall ducati is in the business of building motorcycles, not making oil filters or air filters.
i would guess that all these car/motorcycle companies farm out their filters and just then slap their name on them.
are we saying that ducati has more experience with making oil filters than k&n? or that k&n has more experience with building ducati pistons than ducati does?
then again who knows, right?
OEM oil filter, $12.63 at our sponsor Commonwealth plus you get a member discount. Just sayin.

Not bad. I need a green card.
I'm stitching to K&N filters at ~14.00 a filter, and Amsoil, the distibuter here is willing to sell it at wholesale about $8.00 a liter and deliver to my house if I buy a case at a time. Can't beat that price for oil anywhere, the local shops sell it for 16-19 a liter.
The OEM filter is $21 per, and the mechanics at the shop I deal with use Amsoil in all thier bikes and track bikes so I figure it is good enough for my commuter.

i got my last KN from CA-cycleworks and it cost me $12
i run oil from the dealer but i hear you can run mobile one gold cap
if you can find it in the right weight, you can get it by the gallon at wal-mart
on a side note. I went to the dealer to get some 20-50 and the tech (not the counter guy)
said to run 10-40 or my clutch could drag. no idea what he was talking about but i figured he knows more than
me so thats what i went with
any thoughts?
i was getting 6qts of mobil 1 4T from elite etc for like $70 shipped, but found a 4L jug of Repsol on amazon for like $30 shipped. and i may start using commonwealth for my filters if OEM are only about $12
i run the mobil 1 racing 4t (formerly mx4t) in my s2r800, as well as a K&N filter.
I'm not too anal about oil filters, i just really like the 17mm hex head on the bottom of the K&N. Makes install and removal really simple.
rotella t syn
has worked fine for me

That's exactly what I was going to say. That little extra add-on makes the K&N my favorite. I love it when products include simple, smart, things like this to improve the product.
I've been thinking about including a small tool kit in the product I manage (big computer rack) and this has cinched it. Damn bean counters can eat it.
It would be nice to attach the tool to the case with one of those spring loaded lanyards. I like to attach my chuck key to the drill press this way. Keeps it out of the way and I never lose it. I also tape the allen keys and such for my self assembled furniture to the bottom of the piece so I can find it easily for seasonal re-tightening. Neither is probably such a good idea for the oil filter though ;)

I agree with the Ducatitech video, most of the oil filters on the market are of high quality synthetic filtering medium. I've always done my own oil changes. Did the first one on my Monster yesterday. I used the K&N and Motorex Power Synt 4t 10w 50 (ex$pensive oil, but it's what's been in the bike since day one.) The oil change was uneventful, and I like the hex head on the K&N.
remember that it's the job of the oil to suspend and carry dirt and debri, and the filter's job to clean the oil. You can spend as much money on an oil filter as you want, but chances are it's going to do the ONE job it has about as well as the 12$ job! [thumbsup]

UFI and or Athena make the Ducati oil filters and have for the last 30 years. I don't think Athena has made any for about 10 years.
HiFlo makes the K&N filters. They are identical inside.
UFI filters are good. HiFlo are good. Baldwin filters are the best.
^ he'd know. ;D
Check out his thread. [thumbsup]

Holy old thread Batman!
Knowledge, wisdom and experience are timeless! We have a saying here in Nevada about "Never let an old mine go to waste." Maybe the same applies to old threads.
I wonder who makes those Amsoil EAO oil filters that George thought so highly of? Pretty sure that Amsoil doesn't make their own filters.

Yes they are. Worth a sticky/ Not this thread, this one http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=39672.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=39672.0)
I get K&N filters and Mobil 1 from Amazon, low cost and free shipping, then I add rare earth magnets to the filter case to catch any ferrous bits.
We use Mobil 1 and K&N filters.

I use the magnets too, they were another suggestion from George. Haven't as yet cut open a filter to see what they're attracting.
