Title: GMC Cyclone
Post by: cyrus buelton on May 17, 2010, 06:01:49 AM
So I live right by this weird sort of car dealer called The Toy Barn.

They can only lease new vehicles or sell used. They are not allowed to sell new vehicles based on their dealer license.

Anyway, so out front they usually have very high end vehicles. Porches, a ferrari, Aston Martin, etc etc.

So I drive by yesterday and there it was.............a pristine GMC Cyclone.

They only made them in 1991 from what I recall. Basically a Sonoma with a turbo charger in it.

I did some reading and it will do a 1/4 mi in 13.6 seconds.

Accelerate from 0-30 in 1.3 seconds.

that is some fun shit right there.

I guess Car and Driver said it would outperform a Vette, Viper, and Lambo Diablo at the time.

has anyone ever driven one?

I have little interest in buying it as it would be a summer only vehicle and I don't really have room and would rather by my wife an enduro motobike

but..........

Is it worth it to take dealer harassment to go on a test drive with it????

Not many of them left since the driving experience was so unexpected a lot of them ended up wrapped around telephone poles or into the rear end of the cars in front of them.

From what I read, the vehicle was really ahead of its time.

It was the first vehicle or maybe first truck to have all wheel anti-lock brakes in them.

Also, it was all wheel drive.

I just find it funny they are automatics and not manuals...........

Sorry for the spelling, it is a Syclone, not a Cyclone.

Might be fun to go make the beast with two backs around with it on the dealer's time.

A couple relatives who work(ed) for GM have them back in Michigan.  I was the passenger a few times.  Like Mitt said..unexpected acceleration.   They do go fast!!  [evil]

You ride a Monster though.  Keep the money for the Enduro.

I remember reading this article back in the day...still remember the quote below:

It clears the quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds, compared with 14.5 seconds for the Ferrari, but the Ferraris is moving 6 mph faster (99 mph versus 93). The Ferrari grabs the lead very soon after the quarter and never looks back. Its top speed is 166 mph. The Syclone's is 126.

That is one fast truck...even if it can only carry a keg.  ;D [thumbsup]

I remember that comparison too.   There was a GMC Jimmy version of this called the Typhoon

Maaan... "ground effects."

The Typhoon ended up being a better vehicle since it had more space. The Syclone had all the ride and interior quality of an S-10 of that era, but the AWD and the Grand National derived turbo V6 made it a blast to drive.

I'm a sucker for old school (ok middle school) muscle these days, especially the race trucks.  I'd take it out, but you may take it home too...which isn't a bad thing.

All you need is a pair of pliers and a hammer to fix those things.

I looked on ebay to get a general price

They have one on there with 37k on the odometer and want 20k for it

:o :o

You gotta think whoever has owned one of these things has driven the make the beast with two backsing shit out of it.

I came close to buying a Typhoon in the mid 90s.

I went to the sellers home to check it out.  I told them I was serious about the truck and I would like to have my mechanic check it out.  They were on their way to work and tossed me the keys.  Said to take it out and put the keys through the mail slot when I was done.  [evil]

Luckily my mechanic was about 15 miles away.

THAT IS ONE FUN FRIGGIN VEHICLE!

I didnt rag on it but definitely got a feel for what it could do.  Acceleration off the line was different that any other car Ive ever driven.  Felt like it was lifting up as it took off from a stand still......you'll see what I mean when you drive it.  Because you know you will!  [evil]

I ended up not getting it.....brakes and shocks were shot and there were a few other things it needed.  That and insurance was big $$ for an unmarried 20 something.

Back in the day, I saw a Typhoon race a 5.7 GTA down Francis Lewis Blvd.  Off the line it appeared the front wheels of the Typhoon were coming off the ground.  I couldn't quite tell, it happened very quickly.  Everyone who saw it said the wheels were off the ground for a slight moment and when the car came back down it was gone.  The typhoon made the GTA look like it was standing still.

I'd consider getting rid of my RX300 for this Syclone, but have no idea how it would do in the snow.

Sure, it is all wheel drive and would need snow tires, but still think it would suck ass.

I absolutely would help my neighbor go get some mulch if they needed it; Used to help neighbors with our truck growing up.

it's a 35% front / 65% rear split....

i think most awd porsches have even more of a rearward bias (31/69).

It's all-wheel drive, in a similar sense to most "4-wheel drive" vehicles, and most cars are "2-wheel drive". Not many have lockers for the axles.

I bet it wouldn't be terrible in the snow with proper tires.

You could also put a boost gage on it (if it doesn't have one now) and keep it in vacuum when the weather is crappy.

Take off in second gear and throw some weight in the bed and it probably would be ok in the snow.

lots of fun. it's basically a corvette mini truck

I do remember it needing wheel/directional specific tires and not much adjustment in the seats

allwheel drive power meant it it really hooked up despite not having alot of weight in the back.

Yeah, I realized that later. Sorry, my bad. They came on the heals of one another, so it looked like a steady progression. I also had a friend who was a big Buick Turbo enthusiast who liked to credit Buick for all GM turbo development with the exception of Pontiac's Turbo 4.9   [laugh]

I agree on the looks. It is a total white trash truck. It has some awful stickers on it, etc.

It'd be a fun 3rd car to make the beast with two backs around with..........but as Triple J said........it is 20yrs old, 84k miles...........you know the make the beast with two backser has been ragged.

by the way........

I opened the box and powered it up Sunday.

That thing actually kicks ass and is exactly what I needed.

I played around on scrap piece of wood by tracing out some small designs.

Going slow is clearly the key. It is also nice as I can set the depth of the "blade" so it isn't hanging an inch under the board.

Overall, I am impressed thus far.

good old days of random posters.

I love it.

Back to the thread.......

the wife agreed to go with me to the dealer so I can test drive it. I didn't want to go solo as it would leave an open seat for the salesman to ruin my fun.

Udddddd sure I can. Bring it to my dealership, the service writers will write it up, and you can pay the $135 an hour for me to work on your cars.  I may not be the best choice though since I know nothing about VWs or Lexuseseses. I have customers that I do favors for. Just yesterday I did a tech inspection, oil pan gasket, and track day alignment on a viper.

I actually bathe in the crick (you guys might call it a creek) down from my homestead.

I have 10 dogs living under my front stoop, as well as 4 cars on cinder blocks.

You my friend are potentially correct.

The only problem is a friend is moving back up here (the local rock station is finally bringing back a local morning show and my buddy is one of the guys. He is on his way back up here from Tampa, where he usually resides)

Also, my wife hurt her neck, so I need to make sure it is OK for her to go for a ride and not hurt it with whiplash

Yeah, I have the suction cup mount.

So you suggest mounting on back window looking through the cab or over the top of the roof?

Looking through cab is impossible as the windows are tinted

That would be an easy set up too.

That way I wouldn't have to stop and get out, mount it, etc.

I would like to move it to the front bumper for some close up action of the road just melting away as the engine hums.

definitely will have to safety wire it somehow

Mostly concerned about light conditions for the GoPro.

It seems to be a little dark on cloudy days.

I could give two shits about a wet road, but I don't want it to be an all out rainstorm as that really isn't much fun.

Well, it is fun but are lots of paid people that enforce traffic laws here that love to write tickets and I prefer not to tempt myself. I need one more year of zero infractions to get the 4pts off my license (back to zero) that I got from my little riding incident a few years ago.

It is almost 2 years to the day and I believe points drop off in Ohio after 3 years.

I would think the Typhoon would hook up much better due to stiffer chassis and more weight in the rear.
