Title: Trader Joe's...
Post by: ZLTFUL on June 04, 2010, 05:44:52 AM
...and why should I give a shit.

So West DSM is getting a Trader Joe's. I understand the allure. Fine organic and natural foods at reasonable prices along with $2 a bottle wine. I mean who doesn't love a $2 bottle of wine, amirite?

But it turns out, we already have a local grocery chain that leans very heavily in the direction of a Whole Foods...in fact, Whole Foods has avoided the market because of this local chain.

My question though is why is this news important enough to supplant the top news stories on the local news 2 days ago?
Those stories...
Mom leads police on high speed chase with a 7 year old and 3 year old in the car.
1 teen killed and 2 teens seriously injured in 2 vehicle crash.

I mean great...we have a Trader Joe's coming to the most overdeveloped part of the city and it will create something like 43 new jobs or some shit. But is that seriously important enough to push those other 2 stories down to numbers 3 and 4 on the 5 local news outlet's websites?

I have little to no hope for our society.

it replaces those stories because trader joe's also has a 5 layer nacho dip that is like crack.
i can go through 2 of the big containers of it in one sitting without even realizing it.

They don't have 2$ bottles of wine anymore.

I believe two buck chuck as it as referred to (Charles Shaw is the real name) is now 3.39$ a bottle.

...and it sucks ass. Seriously.  [puke]

Trader Joes should not be compared with Whole Foods, or any other high end (possibly organic) grocery store. Trader Joes is just a store. They have great deals on quite a few things, and their frozen/pre-packaged meals are usually very good (considering they aren't fresh)...but I've never seen one that has a meat/fish/produce/beer/wine/etc dept. that is even close to a nice grocery store. I honestly don't understand why so many people think Trader Joes is such a great place. It's OK, but if you have a high end grocery around then that is far superior.

+1  The one near me surely isn't a "high end" grocery store.  Their produce isn't all that great and the meat isn't butchered there.   The cheap booze is nice, but I haven't actually purchased a bottle that was good enough to buy again.

I go there for three things: bags of roasted almonds, frozen indian food and $1 cliff bars.

Out here there's a place called Grocery Outlet.  Affectionately known as Trader Ho's.

Trader Joe's is nowhere near the league of a Whole Foods or Andronico's, but damn, their Mediterranean hummus and their chocolate covered espresso beans are both addictive.  My family (in/around Memphis) always puts in an order of stuff they want from TJ's when I come home.  They have a decent cheese selection.

TJ's is more newsworthy than whoever the hell Justin Beaber is, but I don't understand why either is considered news.

I've never liked Trader Joe's. They put on in about 2 miles from my old place, tons of hype, blah blah blah, walk in, look around and I was really underwhelmed. I just don't see the draw. Yeah, they have some items that are great but I'm not a snack person and the vast majority of what they had were snacks/dips etc.

I go to Whole Foods to fill up on smug.

When I'm out of hip I go to Trader Joe's.

I go to the farmer's market just to smell the hippies.

That's news?  Unless you live in a real small town, which I am guessing that you don't being that you say there are 5 different local news websites, then I wouldn't really think a Mom's car chase is anything but People Magazine/National Inquirer crap.  The teen car accident sounds tragic though.  I used to watch the local news, but grew tired of hearing about traffic fatalities, house fires, robberies, etc.  Didn't seem to be stuff that I really needed to focus on.  :-\

You are in the Spelling and Grammar Nazi section staring at the Nit-Picky Bullshit. Sarcasm and Spite are four aisles over. Go past the Intelligence and hang a right the rack of Curmudgeon and you'll see it.

No no no. You are thinking of the store at the intersection of Young Love and Hope. You need to go further up the road to Disillusionment and Regret.

got that right...after 2 passes at that place I refuse to go to the one near me...ever again..

The Entitled Elite do their designer food shopping there...and the food is sub-par compared to no-name markets in my area

Uncle Guiseppe's Italian Market (local chain) does laps around Ass-Whole Foods

and even better, it isn't an approved venue in the instruction guide for where to shop as one of the Special People

4 best things at TJ;
1 dark chocolate bars
2 chocolate chip cookies
3 frozen pizza
4 ice cream

Their TJ branded stuff is great and cheap. Just don't drive any vehicle that you like into one of their parking lots.

Maybe the lady in that car chase on the news was on her way to the new TJ

We like TJ a lot.  Like mentioned above it IS NOT a Whole Foods type of store.  Their focus imo is affordable sometimes cheap good tasting food.  I always buy their hummus, juice, organic milk, mandarin chicken for the kiddo, tamales for me to take to work, and yogurt.

I worked at a TJ's in Concord, CA before I joined the Navy 12 years ago. It really was a great place to work. I've enjoyed the produce. Better than most chains. But, not as good as a FM. The bread is good. But, not as good if you go to a "real" bakery. Their organic stuff is fine. Never had any issue. I like the variety of what they offer. Their coffee is good and cheap. I've enjoyed their wine And the ones I don't like, I return. They have a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

As for the 3 buck chuck (yes, I know the price went up - sucks). It really does vary by case. People would come in and buy a couple bottles from different cases, go out to the parking lot and test each bottle. They'd find one they like and come back and buy the whole case. It would really piss us off because they'd open all the sealed cases at the bottom of the display to test the case (obviously once the case has been opened, bottles would get moved as the display grew/shrank).
