So how do I fix this problem? As you can imagine my bike runs like hell. It's a 2001 M750 if that helps. Thanks in advance.
Did it skip while running? :o
This might help: http://www.ducatisuite.com/beltchange.html (http://www.ducatisuite.com/beltchange.html)
Your going to have to put the bike on a rear stand which makes it much easier to locate the timing mark. I'm not very familiar with the 750 but would imagine its similar on most ducs. On the left side of the engine case there is either a small glass window or an allen screw that you can undo to reveal where you can find the timing mark. Inside you will see a metal disc (flywheel, correct me if I'm wrong). With the bike up on the rear stand put the transmission into the highest gear. Rotate the rear wheel slowly while looking into the sight window/sight hole. After enough spinning of the wheel you will see a hash mark on the flywheel, this is the timing mark. Some ducs have two other lines you line this mark up with, on my bike I just center the mark in the window.
Now that you have the timing mark center, flip over to the right side of the bike and pull your belts off. Your going to have to locate the belt timing marks now which vary on a few models. Usually there is a dot on the cogs and a dot on the engine itself. Line these marks up on both of the pulleys. This could be a bit trickier than it sounds as sometimes the marks will be located in such a way where the pulley resists movement. I used a set of vice grips to hold the pulley in place while I slipped the belts back on.
Once you have done this rotate the rear wheel slowly to ensure there is no interference.
Thats the most basic way I can explain it, I'm sure someone familiar with a 750 will chime in.
That should pretty much be it.
How did you detect it skipped 2 teeth?
Remove your belt covers, put the bike on a rearstand, put it in top gear, rotate engine until:
Cam drive pulley looks like this:

Horizontal should look like this:

Vertical should look like this:

It is important to figure out *why* it skipped, and fix that as well.
They don't skip without a reason.
Your bike will likely still run like hell, as chances are good it bent a valve.
Speeddog didn't mention it above, but you're lining up the dimples on the cam pulleys with marks on the belt housing as his pictures show (in case you didn't notice).
I fixed the why it skipped. My finger caused it. A hazard of open covers and not paying attention. I hoping the valves not bent but expecting it to be. So the pulleys will turn? I figured they would but haven't been able to as of yet. Vise grips huh?
jeez man, how does ur finger look????
Do a compression test first to see what`s next on your to-do list....
Broke it half way between last knuckle and tip. It was hanging by a small piece of skin. Nail popped out and was horizontal. Very grusome looking and so f**king painful. Still hurts and it happened on April Fool's Day. Yeah I get the joke. So now I really just want to ride my bike again.
heh, i had my pinky severed off and was hanging by a skin too. but it was cut by a tin can.
wait, so you stuck your finger in a running engine?! Drunk?
2 teeth probably means bent valve, you should do a compression test like stated before.
HOLY SHIT! :-X

2 teeth also means one hell of a trip for that finger. PICS OR IT DIDNT HAPPEN!!!!
F**K U it happened. Pix one of these days. Wish there was a Ducati mechanic closer to where I now reside. As soon as I find more time, I'll fix it.
<mod>
Everyone back it down a notch, please.
Thanks.

Whoa. And for my next trick, lubing & wiping a chain on the stand with the motor running (I've considered this). Hope all's OK man.
We should sticky this for everyone that asks about running open belts. [thumbsup]

I felt that way at one time. I was sure that I was to smart to ever do that. So yeah it was definitely user error. No offense taken, I just think that my covers painted black and on the bike look great.

Fixed. ;D
When I was building bicycle frames, I saw a picture on the internet of someone who'd chopped the end of his finger off while cleaning his chain. So when making decals, I came up with the following:
The text reads "keepum fingers outta doze ouch hurty bits". I think maybe the OP needs a sticker like that near his open belts.
I'm thinking that if you don't intuitively know and understand this, all the stickers in the world won't help. Natural selection needs some room to work. ;D

Yeah, agreed. Put a sticker on it that says "NO ITS FINE STICK YOUR FINGERS HERE, NO PROBLEMO!"
seriously.

Then clearly you have not acknowledged,,, made the acquaintance of,,, or been helped by your "inner-idiot" .........................yet
We all have one....they are watching us constantly looking for the opportunity to jump in and help us out,
and he will strike with lightning speed when we aren't looking, thinking or when our guard otherwise is down
maybe you won't mangle your digits in an open belt drive...
but trust me your inner-idiot will find something special for you to deal with
so that you will stop ignoring him ;)
It may come, but it wont come in the form of me sticking my finger into a spinning gear. thats along the lines of playing wiht a match next to big truck is pumping gas into the main tank.

perhaps not a gear...but never say never...the inner-idiot has a lifetime of patience and will strike with horrifying speed and precision when your guards is down.....
he can make a whole feast of disaster from the merest crumb of oversight
