Title: Balding and denial
Post by: tonyj311 on June 04, 2008, 08:25:36 AM
I have come to the conclusion that I am in denial about my hair loss. I am trying to find the courage to cut the remaining hair off. I have the clippers charged up on the bathroom counter and ready to go.
How short do I take it down?
I dont know if I could go down to a razor blade. Was thinking 1 or 2 guard on the clippers.
Do I stay in denial for 4-5 more years while hair cloning technology is being perfected?
I wont use Rogaine- I cant commit to doing that every day.

I dont have a camera with me at work, so no photos to share at the moment. Maybe I can find one in THCM from a past group ride. THere is one pic on there I recall that made me feel ill when I saw it.

Who has taken the leap and shaved their head to embrace their baldness?

-Tony

Please post a picture of yourself. If you have a nice shaped melon, I say shave it off. Liberate yourself from the anxiety of your hair loss, and move on.

Plus, buzzed/shaved men are handsome as all hell  ;D And you'd never have to worry about helmet hair.

Buzz/shave = way more sexy than a few strands.  You might be surprised at the reaction you will get from women.

IMHO, I take the shaved head is a sign of intensity, not a "I gave up" gesture.
Let's see the before and after.

My dad, who's been bald since 30, likes to say "God only made so many perfect heads, the rest he covered with hair"

Then I usually ask him, "well, what about your face, then?" (he has also had a beard since he was 20, & NEVER shaved it)

Shave it off.  I wouldn't bic it, that's pretty hardcore and only a few people can pull it off.  Go to a barber, spend 20 bucks and have them do it right.

In my past life working for a celebrity hairdresser, I was personally there when my boss finally convinced Michael Bolton to give it up and shaved it off.  He never looked better (too bad his music still sucks ass, but whatever).  Do you wanna be good Michael Bolton or bad Michael Bolton?  ;D

Unless you have a really conical head, take it down to a 0 blade.  You don't have to bic your head in order for the balding not to be as noticeable.  I know of plenty of guys who now just run the clippers over the noggin once a week because they were balding.  For every one of them, it took 10 years off their appearance and really improved their self image.  If you don't like being bald, it will (mostly) grow back in a few weeks anyway.

It's great if you're gifted with a full head of hair, but if not, chicks dig bald heads.

I found the picture. Keep in mind that this could quite possibly be the worst picture ever taken of me before you start making fun. I am the guy in black in the middle with the "receeding" hairline. Hopefully Ducati Fan doesnt mind me stealing it from his website. I may just have to take care of business tonight. I think my daughter would get a kick out of watching me do it.

Ducatista is right - a 0 clip would be nice as well. My ex used to take the guard off the clippers and take it down almost to his skin, leaving just enough fuzz to leave a shadow (also sexy).

A note about the shaved down but not quite off look - his head was like velcro.

i'm so glad that all the men on both sides of the family have a full head of hair still. the only bald one is the one that smoked 5 packs a day since 1975, and even then it's just kinda thinning.

besides, my melon looks awful shaven, yes i found that out the hard way.

You already ride a ducati, so you've got bonus points right there.

Shave, wear dark clothes, grow a goatee: you'll look like your from the future.

Thats a good plan. I have a big gray cat who is quasi-evil. No laser beams though. Well, the inlaws dropped in last night so no-go on the hair cut. I give myself till the end of the month to take care of business.

shave it.  you'll only appreciate it once you've actually done it.  the lack of maintenance necessity alone is worth the cost of the most expensive clippers you can find.

skip the goatee though.  they're also just another thing you've got to maintain.  my wife loves it when I grow one but it makes me feel 20 years older as half of it is grey now. I can bring it back in 4-5 days so I let her have her way around her birthday or our anniversary.

hair or lack thereof is just a fact of life.  don't deny anything- just take action!  now!  go!  what are you waiting for!? go!

Scruff can be sexy, but hurtful if your man has coarse hair! My beau's scruff is very rough so he never lets it grow. But that's ok... he has a shadow even when he's freshly shaven. Now THAT is hawt!

Mmmm... shadow...

I have sort of the opposite problem.  I haven't cut my hair in ages (Only once since I got out of the Navy) and haven't shaved my goatee since then.  The goatee isn't going anywhere, but I'm trying to get up the nerve to cut my hair... a lot shorter.

i like IZ_ more than full shine, but i think if you go in and have it buzzed - have them show you some stages.  ask em to cut the long off and show you long fuzz, if you don't like it slip on the lower guard and go super tight, don't like that - go all the way.  you'll have a pre-view of grow out looks.  ...i like IZ_.
[coffee]
and about meester threadjacker: if your hair is something special and you get the "it's so thick, it's so pretty" all the time, maybe it's worth having long, but if you're just another guy with long hair - HACK IT!  have a look at yourself, don't like the look, well - it will grow back!  i speak from experience, i thought long black and pattern dyed hair was the shizzle on me, but then realized i could chop it to avoid embarrassing my mom {just this once} and let it grow back.  result: short works, i probably won't be growing it out again.

Skullet! Skullet! Skullet!
For special occasions you can comb it up and over the top Donal Trump style.  :)

On the other hand if you give into the over zealous anti-skullet lobby on this board and decide to go with a full shave - your will save some money on shampoo.  :-\

If you go with the skullet though, you could pair it with a nice moustache. No beard. Just a moustache.  8)

Go to the skin bro. I shave twice a week and love it. Plus I don't have to hire a support crew to help me unvelcro my helmet from my head after a ride.

Just make sure you invest in some sunscreen until your scalp darkens up or you will regret it. Sunburnt melon sucks.

think about it..if given the choice who would you f with?

a guy that is obviously going bald so he shaves his head.

a guy that is obviously going bald and is throwing it in your face.

the choice is now clear. do the right thing. (but don't do the stupid skullet pony tail thing, let it flow free)

Coming to you live from a man with a full head of hair...

are any of the women bald? should they withhold their opinions because they haven't lived it?

that's very closed minded of you mom, i'm dissapointed. :'(

i'm merely expressing my opinion and you are being a jerk by discriminating.

although your female approach does have merit

it is disqualified due to the fact that the women are stating what they find attractive

would you find a woman with a skullet attractive?

would that not make you closed minded if you didn't find it attractive?

when have I ever alluded to being open minded?

i'm not saying i find men with a skullet attractive.
i'm saying that some look like badasses.

if i were to say that i find bald women unattractive that would be my opinion which is what the women here are doing. they just happen to like it, and you just happen to be a head shaver. it is not closed minded to state myt opinion. it would be closed minded of me to state that opinion and tell the people that disagreed with me to go away while embracing the people that agreed with me.

a couple of points

I never said that you should go away

I was just pointing out that you have a full head of hair

which could be seen as a negative angle when considering your opinion

however

I just wanted to bring into question your motivation on the skullet action

Also, I am only an occasional head shaver

the past 2 months I have been rocking my locks

i'm also laughing at the thought of you with dreadlocks.

Just make sure you invest in some sunscreen until your scalp darkens up or you will regret it. Sunburnt melon sucks.

I'll drink to that.  In fact I had to just last week as my sunburned pate demanded such self medication.  The peeling wasn't pretty.  Damned Seattle sunshine comes outta nowhere!

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......  :)

I keep mine buzzed to about 1/2" or so in length and it's great.

Also: Neatly trimmed goatee - check. Neatly trimmed sideburns - check.

I'm a pretty good sized guy too (6'1", 38" waist, 54" chest) and, well, as someone said before, if you wear dark clothes (and some cool shades) you're a Bond villain from the future.  ;)

I don't believe it. I think we need to see proof...

Dude,  take it from the bald guy in the pic you pilfered from DucatiFan  ;D.  I debated and procrastinated for a long time before finally shaving it off and will never let it get longer than a quarter inch or so again.  Just take guard off the trimmer then follow up w/ the razor.  [thumbsup]
