"Los Feliz Charter School for the Arts (LFCSA) is pleased to announce a charity raffle with the grand prize being the last brand new, team liveried, fully 3-year warranted, never before registered, Ducati Desmosedici in North America. This charity raffle will raise money to benefit LFCSA. The Desmosedici winner will be announced at this summer's Laguna Seca MotoGP event. Tickets for this raffle are $40 each. The MSRP of the Ducati is $72,500. The D16RR was provided by Bill Nation, owner of Pro Italia Motorcycles (Glendale, CA) and the parent of a student at LFCSA."

I just saw this on my fb page. Checking with my insurance company to see how much I will have to pay when I win it. ;)
well thanks for checking for me. you can pay my insurance if you want, but i'll be the only rider [laugh]
but i just tried Pro Italia's website and it isn't on there.
Ohhh I am so there! I've heard from DR16 owners that insurance is not that much as it's based primarily on the bikes CCs - which was surprising to me because of the value of the bike... but that's what they said.
Wow, nice!!
That's gonna make me a sweet track bike! ;D
They're only taking phone numbers now for tickets...can't sell them until tomorrow morning apparently.
hellz yea, i'm in
I just read the email for this from ProIT. [drool]
If my math is correct, $40 for a $72,500 bike...that's a terrible return on your investment......
... I'm stopping by after work to buy my ticket !! [thumbsup]
got my two tickets. now I'll dream until drawing and wish, wish, wish.
got the one :D
of course you all can buy one, but I already have the winning one :P
Forget about the insurance. Just wait until you get the tax bill [evil].
Nice! Just keep in mind everyone that you'll need to pay the taxes on it prior to delivery as the IRS doesn't consider it a gift ... But still, a $20k D16RR? Sign me up ;D

Can you just NOT register the bike?

This has nothing to do with sales or registration tax. IRS treats it as "income" fyi, so ... 25% (28% backup withholding if you don't produce ID)

Pro-Italia just picked up a DMF sponsorship btw. I wonder if that knocks all the flounders out of the raffle....hmmmmm.
If I win the bike I'll get DP to put a big DMF logo on the side. (and I promise to not raid the DMF operating fund to cover the taxes....honest).

I saw not long ago a very low mileage Desmo for $42,000.

I called these guys on Wednesday, bought a ticket, gave them my info. Haven't received a confirmation email yet, and they haven't charged my credit card yet. Anyone have a similar experience? I will call them tomorrow when they are open, but just kind of curious about it.
Yes, me too. I have heard nothing and have not received anything via USPS. Maybe too soon. I still have faith something will show this week.
I called last Wednesday also, the guy at pro italia said they are waiting to receive the raffle tickets before they can charge your card.
Doesn't matter for you guys anyways, the bike is mine! Hehe :D

Pretty sure this would fall under gambling winnings. . .

If I remember correctly, I don't think you can take a direct loan out to pay federal taxes.
However, I suppose if you put an equity line on your house, they would have no idea where the money was going.
but then again, is it worth shelling out 18k for a bike that has such limited use other than saying own one?

You got it right there.
Donate it to the Good Will or any other charity.
That 75,000$ tax credit will exceed what you pay on it.
I did the calculations for a friend a year ago if he hit a hole in one, he'd win a lexus, which was valued about the same.
You make out much better donating it.
then
go buy a 1098R
It performs better anyway.
Only if you're not already maxed out on writeoffs.
I'd take the S1000RR over the 1098R-far cheaper to buy.

Well yeah, that true on the write-off part. It depends what you donate each year.
I was just using the 1098 as an example since it is a race bike like the D16RR.
I personally have no interest in either of them. They are uncomfortable for me to ride as are most crotch rocket style bikes.
I'd rather have a GS1200.
OK explain this to me.

Just a note of clarification.
Since I own both the 1098 R and the S 1000 RR I will say they are 2 entirely different animals so to speak.
The " R " has so much mid range torque it will flat knock you off the bike , the RR , well I haven't opened it up yet but if the 1st 7,000 rpms are any indication about the next 7,000 rpms .............I don't know if I want to go there.

You wouldn't pay the taxes on it as you immediately donate it to a group and at the end of the year, you claim this as a contribution on your taxes and acts as a positive cash flow. So if you owe money, it will come out of there first or if you are clean and owe nothing (proud on you for having your affairs set up ideally) then you get a nice check in the maily after April 15 or whenever you file.

it surely is
to me at least.
To me it is far from a bike that has limited use. I'd be one of few, if any, to put 5000 miles a year on it.
I'd ride it to DIMBY. At the track. In the rain. To get ice cream. And for any other reason. It would also get put on my annual bike washing routine.
Area of application is in the eye of the beholder.
I guarantee someone would be beholding me on that thing with luggage.
And and my garmin
:D
gotta agree. i would love to ride the heck out of that. ride it to work. bring my lunch to work and sit and each lunch staring at it.
Coke is easy to find in South Florida.
I reckon that I would choose to ride the crap out of it as well, albeit rather nervously at first. And I would surely park it in my living room, so that I could see it and stare at it everyday. However, the thought has crossed my mind that I might sell it. Financially, if I kept it I could only have one bike. And a POS car. But if I turned around and sold it, I could have a stable. Buy a SC1000, SS1000, and another monster. You know, a little variety. Don't know what I'd do, guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. 8) I wonder how much the D16RR would cost to insure. And how much do you reckon it would cost to adjust 16 valves? I did my own valves on my M900, and that was enough!
D16 used to come with a service plan included in the purchase price--dunno if that's still true?
BTW, I had this great idea where everybody on the board could give me $40 (but no more than $100--I don't want to be greedy) and I could buy my own D16.

Wonder what the value would be over time if it remained in its current condition.
Say 10 years, so 2020
Value same, lower, higher and at what price point. A collectable for sure.
Lower , there is one for sale in the Netherlands (with 1500 km on it)
New price in the Netherlands was about 65000â,¬ , asking price for the used on is 42000â,¬
Lower I'd say for some time, until maybe collectible status.
The performance attraction will fade as newer bikes get more impressive, for a fraction of the cost.
S1000rr...
Just a thought.
I saw where the used price for a D16RR a month ago was $43,000.( MCN used price guide )
So , if you pay $40 for the ticket, win the bike , pay like $20,000 in taxes and then it becomes a used bike as soon as you take ownership.
So you could end up selling it for only $23,000 more which isn't going to buy you much of a stable unless you are buying used .
Dolph
God, I'd hate to make only 23k off a $40 dollar investment. The horror.
Yeah.....makes me want to buy ANOTHER ticket! [thumbsup]
Just sayin' in case sombody thought they could turn around and get $70,000 for it !
Dolph :)
What if you win it and just not register it, and put it up for sale as soon as you get it. sell it for say 50k and then give your GF a 50k gift and she turns around and buys you a few toys with it... would that be a loophole or fraud?
I'm no expert but I think it would come off the Dealer's MSO so then it would have to be titled to someone.
Dolph :)

Exactly... MUST be registered to someone. *BUT*, if you
sold the ticket to someone... then you'd only be on the 'hook' for the income of the sale of that ticket. The buyer would have to be responsible for registration, taxes and such so you couldn't sell the ticket for MSRP, but I figure you could get like $20K for it easy...
I'm no expert on this and I'm not advocating fraud here, but if that person wrote you like 3 checks to cover the $20K so that the amounts were less then the $10K that the IRS looks for... One to you, one to your Mom, one to the G/F...
i love 4000 brains collectively working together to get over on this!

Here's the Deal.
If you win the Bike in the USA , you must report the MSRP as income on your 1099.
Some States will allow you to not pay Sales Tax.
If the MSRP is $72,500 then your reported income to the IRS will go up by $72,500 for Federal Income Tax purposes.
That would surely bump most people into a higher tax bracket , but you get a D16RR for $40 plus the amount of Fed. Tax.and possibly State Taxes.

Correct - except the organization raffling off the bike is required by federal law to collect the taxes (25%, or 28% if you don't divulge your information)
prior to delivery of the bike. It outlines this very clearly on the IRS web site as well as on the raffle's web site.
Cheers,
Adam

On Ducati.ms they said it was "Jeffrey Jones" and that made me hope they mispronounced my name (Jeffrey Giles.)
Drawing was 2 hours ago. TONS of people where there. Hayden pulled Jeffrey Jones of San Luis Obispo, CA. He wasn't there so Hayden called him on the phone - didn't answer so Nicky left him a message. Pretty good message, "Hey man, this is Nicky Hayden. You just won a Desmosedici! This isn't one of your friends messing with you either!"
The high def video is being edited now and will be up before morning.
From my vantage point.

Sucks they couldn't get the winner on the phone. Sort of anti-climactic if you ask me.
"and the winner is, this guy, he's not here and we can't get him on the phone. Ok bye everyone"
It worked out pretty good though. He was at the track and saw his name on the winning ticket at the PI booth. He owns a 1098S so he is "one of us". I just posted a video of the whole thing. He was happy!
We will post some more info shortly - like how large the donation to the school was (that was what this was about after all!). We'll post up on August first about a little thank you to everyone who participated. [thumbsup]

You beat me to it - thanks! We thought this would be a good way to say thank you to everyone who participated. Basically you can get your money back in the form of a discount or if you need an exhaust you can get 10x your money back!
Example - Termi Exhaust= $2150 - your discount for participating in the raffle is $430! Not bad for giving to charity and hopefully having some fun dreaming about winning a desmo!
ha ha no prob! You should have posted here before facebook i guess ;)

What, no gear? Please tell me it was not loaded onto a truck.
dude, my money says he isn't keeping it. what, like $25,000 in taxes?
only if you claim and register it ;-)
if its a raffle, they will know.
Does he have to pay California State Sales Tax also which is what 11% plus State Income Tax on top of Federal Income Tax ?
Dolph
Is there anyway for the guy to not register it and just use it as a track bike? I can't believe taxes are so high on it that is ridiculous. Is it really $25k in taxes? In NY there is just 8% sales tax i didn't think anything else applied to buying a bike.

Yes. It's treated just like any other lottery winnings, it's not a sales tax issue - it's an issue of getting 70k$ for free, and the IRS wanting their cut as it's considered income.

The pregnant dog of it is that you are being taxed on $72,500 income, when those bikes are struggling to fetch $60,000 on ebay (with very little mileage.) Seems kinda lame like that. Still, congrats to the guy and good for him. I am still in partial denial that I didn't win. Only tore up my tickets about 2 days ago.
dont they base the tax on the Blue book value at the time of raffle and not the sticker price from when it was made a fews years ago?

It's a brand new bike, I would be suprised if they valued it like that.
This is the IRS, remember ;D
Cheers,
Adam
PS: Honestly, who cares? A D16RR in the wrapper for 20-ishK? And honestly, if you have a bunch of deductions or own a business ... do do do
