Title: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: howiroll on June 30, 2010, 08:09:07 AM Just got a new M1100 ABS and plan on doing some touring but mostly riding around town. I have read through most of the forum posts and can't seem to find a topic on occasional weekend warrior luggage. What does that mean? Something you can take off and put on quick. Most of the nice systems have mounting brackets and need something that more straps to the rear for a couple days of riding. Anyone have any advice? Saw Ducati has something but not sure how it mounts. Like the Cortech but does not look like it wont catch on fire with the pipes. Would be a huge help.
Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: ngk12 on June 30, 2010, 01:16:54 PM i believe someone did a post a while ago about custom making some brackets that avoid the exhaust. other than that the only luggage ive seen is the ducati performance tank or tail bags.
Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: ryandalling on June 30, 2010, 01:27:03 PM I have the hard bags from ducati performance... a tad spendier... but they are easy on and easy off... the only down side is the brackets remain when you take the bags off... and that detracts from the look of the bike a bit... but I love the bags themselves... work really well.

I don't like the look of most bags on the bike but with bags I could ride it to work more often. I've been looking at these; http://www.motostrano.com/giart4spbisa.html (http://www.motostrano.com/giart4spbisa.html) with this mounting bracket, but w/o the tail bag; http://www.monsterparts.com/pc/T681/Comfort-Touring/T681.html (http://www.monsterparts.com/pc/T681/Comfort-Touring/T681.html) Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: Amlethae on June 30, 2010, 04:33:50 PM with this mounting bracket, but w/o the tail bag; My problem with that bracket is that (from what I can figure out from pictures) if you don't have that stock beer tray and you don't have the stock rear sets, you're SOL. So I can't use it because I've got the CompWerkes eliminator and the Rizoma rears (w/passenger pegs too). I love the bags you're thinking about though!http://www.monsterparts.com/pc/T681/Comfort-Touring/T681.html (http://www.monsterparts.com/pc/T681/Comfort-Touring/T681.html) Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: hihhs on June 30, 2010, 05:16:06 PM Shit. You're right. I've got the CW fender eliminator too!
AND I am definitely gonna get rid of the passenger peg "wings" asap. Now I need another plan. Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: mstevens on June 30, 2010, 05:30:19 PM I have the hard bags from ducati performance. Could you provide a link to those? All I can find on the Ducati accessories site is soft bags, not hard ones. Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: Raux on June 30, 2010, 07:12:10 PM Givi has a system that is just a tail bag mount. look into them
Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: JEFF_H on July 01, 2010, 08:40:53 AM Givi makes a hard tail bag and mount
(http://www.giviusa.com/attachfile/content/prodotti_regionali_usa_com/39417/0.0.1.varc_780fz.jpg) i'd go for a strap-on soft tail bag if it were me. i really like the Cortech sport one. Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: Goat_Herder on July 01, 2010, 09:17:31 AM Givi makes a hard tail bag and mount +1 on a soft tail bag. Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: howiroll on July 01, 2010, 10:58:43 AM It looks like mounting brackets are a must for side bags. Looking to get away from that. Think this setup will cover weekend trips. I assume I would not have a problem with these.

They have a strapped and magnetic version. How well does the magnetic versions work on a Monster with plastic covers for the tanks? Thanks for the input. Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: Raux on July 01, 2010, 12:39:03 PM have to use a strap version. no magnetic bags
the givi tail bag doesnt need to be used, i was more thinking about the rack out the back. you could put a duffel roll or anything else on the rack. Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: r_ciao on July 02, 2010, 07:29:19 AM on my M696, I use Cortech's 14L strap tank bag matched with the Sport Tail bag. Both fit really well. I have a bungee strap net for the sleeping bag that I put on top of the tail bag. This rides high and would prohibit the use of a backpack. Am also considering the Kreiga line of backpacks for extra capacity. But back to the original topic... the Cortech sport tail bag is great!

Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: howiroll on July 04, 2010, 01:57:44 PM Just got back from a weekend trip and the cortech mini bag (strap version) and the sport tail bag worked fantastic. Would highly recommend. Only enough with that combination for a couple day trip but works well for the weekend warrior. Everyone thanks for advise and will post sooms picks to show how they look but look fine.
Title: Re: New - M1100/696 Rear Luggage Post by: r_ciao on August 10, 2010, 09:01:18 PM here's a few pics on my M696 with the Cortech Super 14 liter tank bag and the Sport tail bag.
good looking, functional bags. i like things that match. :) (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4075/4881059963_ea5ac826ed.jpg) tank bag width fits nicely on flat part of tank and it fits a spare visor. [thumbsup] (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4076/4881674972_c0de5b7d1b.jpg) tail bag secures well with four bungee hooks. it expands to hold a weekend's worth of clothes, YMMV. (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4123/4881061565_66d63e9138.jpg) any problem with scratches? no problems with scratches b/c of the soft, spongy liners.Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: ggemelos on August 11, 2010, 05:51:01 AM I did a 9 day trip with the DP tank bag and a waterproof duffel strapped to the back of the bike. This was more than enough space to pack cloths, camping gear, and tools. The duffel was strapped using the mounts for the pipes as one anchor point and under the seat as another anchor point. Putting the straps under the seat and around the latch was a little annoying. I was thinking of getting a new seat from Corbin, I am planning to ask them to sink four d-rings into the pile-on seat to use a anchors for the duffel. Ideally these would be completely covered by the cowl.

I have a small tank bag from them but it's magnetic. Works on the 620 but not my 1100. The tailbag will be perfect size though for making the trip from PHX to LA for DIMBY. Along with my Kreiga Hydropack/10L bag.
How did that big Northface do with the wind? I see someone else had a similar bag/setup. Title: Re: New - M1100/696 Rear Luggage Post by: IZ on April 03, 2011, 10:35:18 PM here's a few pics on my M696 with the Cortech Super 14 liter tank bag and the Sport tail bag. good looking, functional bags. i like things that match. :) (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4075/4881059963_ea5ac826ed.jpg) [thumbsup] I saw both the Ducati Performance and the Cortech yesterday. I liked the DP looks & mounting setup but the Cortech price is right! I'm actually thinking about getting it now for daily use. The Tumi backpack I carry is usually full and doing a number on my back since I'm doing a lot of miles between sites. Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: jeeves on April 04, 2011, 05:37:48 AM I struggled with the same luggage issue for my 1100. I chose the Bags connection Cargo bag. http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/922/340/ (http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/922/340/)
It fits great, does not slide around and holds alot. Plus with the waterprooof liner it keeps everything nice and dry. If you have a rear fender eliminator you will need to be creative with the straps for the rear of the bag, and I had to fashion some brackets for my rear indicator lights so they would extend out past my exhaust. I used this bag on a 11 day 3500 mile trip last summer. The photo below is of my bike with the cargo bag, a sleeping bag, ground pad, and an extra duffel bag with some camping gear.. It looks a little like the truck from the Beverly Hillbillies but it actually worked great and did not effect handling too much. In fact I rode Deals Gap with my bike loaded like this. they may not "look cool" when parked at starbucks so you won't get all the guys at starbucks asking you about your motorcycle. if that is something you will miss then maybe the topbox is not for you. [cheeky] but seriously its great for everything else, you can literally go in a store or mall, etc and put your helmet and gloves in it and lock it for a few hours and come back with a bag of stuff and not have to wear a backpack or such the entire time. well if you pack right and get the larger topbox you never need to wear a backpack and can put all your weekend clothing on a trip in the topbox. its awesome. and that bracket it is hwoing is not that bad alone when you want to take off the top box. the topbox looks goofy for the first week you use it then after that you literally wonder how you did without it. now if you are someone that only rides for an hour or 2 in the twisites on teh weekends then its really not for you, as you don't need that type of carrying but even then if you stop someonewhere you can alsways put your stuff somewhere so its really convenient. Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: jvax on April 05, 2011, 11:12:05 PM There is a Kiwi company called Ventura (http://www.ventura-bike.com (http://www.ventura-bike.com)) that does bike luggage racks and bags. They have fitment kits for many makes/models. They have resellers in many countries/regions, including north america: http://www.ventura-mca.com/. (http://www.ventura-mca.com/.) Their kit for the M1100: http://www.ventura-bike.com/fitments.aspx?modelid=1023 (http://www.ventura-bike.com/fitments.aspx?modelid=1023) (http://www.ventura-bike.com/images/models/1052.jpg) (http://www.ventura-bike.com/images/models/1053.jpg) (http://www.ventura-bike.com/images/models/1054.jpg) (http://www.ventura-bike.com/images/models/1056.jpg) Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: IZ on April 05, 2011, 11:35:31 PM :o That'll fit 10 days worth of clothes, gear, etc.
Something to consider in the future. Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: Raux on April 06, 2011, 09:15:00 AM not sure if this was mentioned before
Hepco and Becker has a tail bag mount and new side mounts the side mounts are some of the cleanest looking ones i've seen. Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: IZ on April 07, 2011, 02:09:51 PM Nice! Just happened to be at ducati and all tank bags and tail bags on sale. $60 for the Cortech tail bag.
Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: IZ on April 07, 2011, 07:40:01 PM Wow! This thing fits a lot more clothing than I thought it would! Went for a dry run on packing it up and nearly gave a weeks worth of clothes. Toiletries and tire repair kit fit easily into the small Cortech tank bag. Its magnetic but I'm going to rig it so it will stay out on the 1100s tank.

Quality seems very good, but what I likes most about the Nelson -Rigg bags are their triple threat mounting system, when ordering you can choose from suction cup, magnet, hooks, or strap mounts.
(http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn165/dsamRus/IMG_2045.jpg) (http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn165/dsamRus/IMG_2046.jpg) The front bag I ordered with the solar kit which has a panel that charges a lithium ion battery to power/ recharge a phone, GPS, etc.. (http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn165/dsamRus/IMG_2047.jpg) Both bags are expandable, and there is enough space to carry a couple sets of clothes and toiletries. ;) Title: Re: New - M1100 Rear Luggage Post by: IZ on April 13, 2011, 07:28:44 PM Nice! The solar panel on the tank bag is a great idea! I may have to look into that too! [thumbsup]
