Here's a question that may seem obvious to some people, but not I - what's the significance of the logo on the tank?

It's a very old Ducati logo

Just a guess, Mostro is Italian for Monster.

I wasn't refering so much as to what is says, but as to what the logo represents - a bird? and how that fits into Ducati history.

It dates back from 59-67.

The logo represents a bird or an eagle.  I'm not sure which, but I'm pretty sure its a bird.  Or it could be an eagle.

I agree and would like to add that It could also be a "gold" bird or a "gold" eagle.

I just read that if it faces towards the left, then it represents a bird, and if it faces towards the right, it represents an Eagle.  But this was on Wikiwhogivesacrap.com so it may not be accurate.

Alright, after digging and digging, I discovered the origin of this logo.

It turns out that this logo was originally a "Moto Ducati Eagle" logo and labeled as such during the 1960's and used on the singles:

It was first used on the 1961-1965 250 Monza single:

It was also used on th 250 Scrambler for the 1962-1967 production years as well as the 250 Mach 1 and Mark 3

Use of the Moto Ducati Eagle logo ended use with the 1967 production year.

Near as I can tell, the Mostro Logo that we're discussing was a mod to the original because Ducati didn't used this logo on any production model. Don't get me wrong, I really like it and it's a cool logo - it just wasn't used by Ducati (from what I can find).


Notably, the use of a gold eagle is a direct reference and national symbol of the Italian Air Corp. This symbol was first integrated into a logo and used by Moto Guzzi and later adopted by Ducati. At that time, the eagle was used as a symbolic reference of national pride and has remained a part of the Guzzi logo to this day.

I thought that since Ducati is in Italy, that maybe the eagle had something to do with this.

Clearly this is what led US Desmo to organize their annual Ducs Fly South event each fall.  This year it's happening September 17-19.

Threadjacking aside, where did you get the Ducati Eagle logo? I've been thinking about actually introducing my bike to some paint and that logo would be perfect...

The logo is painted.
So it isn't a sticker

Even better. Although that begs the question - What did you (or the painter) use as a template?

Maybe your painter has a vinyl machine.

For masking you need a different vinyl.

That really is an incredible looking machine.

The headlight bucket does a really nice job of tying in the color scheme and keeping everything flowing.


One question... did you change something with the exhaust since the first pic you posted back on page 2 of this thread?  It looks like the angle of the can is slightly different.

In this picture your tank and headlight appear to be baby blue in color.  Did you repaint it again or is this just a funny picture?  Or maybe my computer is not showing color correctly.  Anyways I think it looks good in baby blue.  It's not a color I would have ever imagined on a Monster until now.

I think I liked it a bit better how it was in the first pic.  It ran parallel to the tube under the seat.

OK, I went back and looked at the pics on pages 1 and 2.  I thought it was white in those pics, but I can see the greyness of the paint job in those pictures now. 

Glad to see you are back to the classic headlight.  It is good to experiment, but the painted headlight bucket of the classic headlight along with custom two into one exhaust is what really sets your bike off.

Nice bike - out of curiosity though, why is it idling at 3k RPMs?

It's idling at 1200 revs but i had the (how is that think on the left called) a bit on (bike was cold)

choke/fast idle lever...

How in the world did they come up with that name for it?  That's just loopy.  They shoulda called it the, "Maybe It's A Bird" logo or something cool like that.

Re the Moto Guzzi logo, the eagle was used by remaining founders of the company to commemorate the other would-be founder who was a pilot and who died before the company was formed.
