Title: Front chain guard - what is it good for?
Post by: stopintime on August 03, 2010, 11:28:28 AM
Frankie goes to Hollywood?

It looks ugly, hides my ERV3 chain, makes it harder to clean that area. Anything else?

Will it in any way actually protect me from a broken chain?

I think it's more so you don't get anything(body parts included) snagged and pulled through the sprocket.

I see people run without one all the time though

...what is it good for? ... absolutely nothing.....

I took it off because it looks much cooler without it.

Get a prettier one.

I like mechanisms as much as the next guy, but exposed hard moving parts so close to my parts doesn't appeal to me.

I took the rear one off, and wanted to take the front one off also; however, I noticed that every once in a while the inside of my heel hits it, or it hits the inside of my heel.  If it wasn't there...

I'd like to change it to one that lookes better though, but if it make contact with the inside of my heel, it can't be CF.  Amuminuim sure, but that's not too common.

My rearsets came with a large metal heel guard, which btw doesn't protect my heel. If my heel hits anything, it's the swing arm.

if you go down and get your toe pinched and the wheels still spining, it will save whatever your wearing from getting caught.

aside from that nothing. i only put mine back on because i hit the track this year. otherwise i would not have it.

you don't need it at the track....

I have a DP carbon fiber front chain guard that has never fit right.  I trimmed it a bit and it still rubs the chain.   >:(  I think I'll remove it one of these days.

Chain lube sling

As the chain turns around the sprocket, the change in direction causes sling.

Your leg will be covered in lube after you do the chain.

Cleaning the chain harder?  It's that hard to use a hex wrench?

I raced NHRA drags 2 years ago. Without chainguards you won't pass tech. It is required at the track here in Portland Ore.

???  Hex wrench?  Maybe you ride around backward, but 98% of my sling ends up on the cases around the drive sprocket.

hex to remove the guard

and yes, 98% of the sling goes there

the other 2% will go on your leg.

Chain guards on the swingarm are required at the track here.

the "front chain guard" otherwise known as a sprocket cover, however is not, at least at NJ Motorsports Park

I've got the same problem, just thought it was good old DP carbon... [bang]

Has any body tried one of Shift-Tech's carbon front chain guards... ???

[laugh]  Well, I haven't cleaned the underside of my front chain guard in 40,000 miles and there's exactly zero chain lube under there.  YMMV

that's interesting, what do you use to lube your chain?

mine looks like a pelican off the Louisiana coast

[laugh] [laugh]  I use Chain Wax.  I get a little fling on the rear wheel, but the majority ends up around the drive sprocket (and down onto the rear-set bracket).

i use the same thing and get a LOT more fling.. maybe i'm using too much...

I follow Ca-Cyclworks Chris' advice: lube (Chain Wax) a warm chain, let sit a few seconds and wipe off the excess.  This will lube and clean the chain at the same time.

Also, I have a Scottoiler* on my Bandit that uses 80-90 wt gear oil and I have NO chain guard and I get no fling on my leg (or any other body part).   ;D

*I have the eSystem (e for electronic) which is accelerometer-equipped and only oils the chain after the bike is in motion.  It works beautifully:  I haven't adjusted my chain in over 8000 miles, and I've only wiped off the excess oil/dirt 2 or 3 times!!

FWIW my bike came without a cover and I havent noticed any chain lube fling on my clothes at all (the inner wall of the sprocket insert is a total mess though.)

also never had a toe sucked in or a boot rubbed by the spinning sprocket.
