Title: The NFL Thread
Post by: Desert Dust on August 06, 2010, 04:27:39 PM
Last year we had quite a bit of verbal jousting during the playoffs, so with the regular season only about a month away, well...... why not have an NFL thread?  [beer]

For starters, the two biggest disappointments this year will involve the Eagles & Redskins.

The Eagles will be disappointed after getting shot down by their former quarterback, Donavan Mcnabb. Two division losses for the Eagles this year.

The Redskins will be (and probably are) disappointed that they ever signed Albert Hanesworth. Albert Hanesworth will be disappointed that he didn't get his fat ass in shape while he watches the Redskins in at least the wildcard round of the playoffs.

By the way, I'm a long time Niners fan, so I am hopeful we get out of the cellar and at least make it to the playoffs this year. The NFC West (worst) shouldn't be as tough this year now that Warner has retired. 10 & 6?

New coaching staff. Revived defense. More experienced offense.

Hopefully will make Da Bears contenders again.

I've been a Brown's fan since 1960.

Yeah, pretty tough to admit and even tougher to swallow.

I'm hoping w, Holmgren as President and new faces on the field , the Team might get to .500 or better.

Don't know about Jake Delhomme, he's in his 16th season.

Still think Brady Quinn had the right stuff if he had a better line and receivers.

The Browns line was the best it's been since the late 80s, but Quinn made a lot of bad decisions. I can't blame the kid given how the team treated the QB position. Terrible mismanagement.

I was a Packers fan, and when Holmgren went to Seattle, I followed that team. Now that he's running the show with the local club, I'll be watching the Browns again. I'm excited about Seneca Wallace and Josh Cribbs in the backfield. Both can catch, throw and run. Both have QB experience and are listed as receivers.

The Browns will be good this year. With the Steelers starting the season with their star rapist on suspension, the whole division gets a head start.

This years season of "Hard Knocks" on HBO will be featuring the Jets. Starts Aug. 11.

If you haven't watched this show (you're really not an NFL fan  :P). It is excellent. It started in 01 with the Ravens. Then the Cowboys in 02. Series resumed in 07. Check it out.  [thumbsup]

Not a big football fan (especially college ball) but I do live in Dallas and I'm a native so I have been inundated with the Dallas Cowboys since they first existed. I remember my Dad taking me to games early on when they played at the Cotton Bowl on the grounds of the State Fair of Texas. He was a season ticket holder from day one at Texas Stadium.

Anyway, it was great seeing the TV news coverage last night of Emmitt Smith being inducted into the Hall of Fame. He is far and away one of my all time favorite Cowboy players. His work ethic on the field, what he did for the local community off the field and being the all time leading rusher made this a no brainer. Good example to young players. [thumbsup]

I don't think everyone will have a head start because Big Ben's out.  This division is stacked with Cinnci and Baltimore.  Those are the teams to watch out for.  Our Brownies have no chance this year.  I will say that I think Delhomme still has a couple of good years left and heard a nice interview with the guy who covers the Panthers who thought that Jake needed a change of pace and still has a lot left in the tank.

I  hope Cribbs gets an expanded role becuase that guy is unstopable.

While I'm a Browns fan, I wouldn't mind seeing Cinnci get a ring.

[laugh] OK  ;) Seneca Wallace isn't anything special...just ask Seahawks fans.

I'm hoping that Cutler and Martz will gel, and the Bears offense will be good enough to take the pressure off of their defense and let them play loose. I'm also hoping that the addition of Peppers will make their D-Line a serious force, making their mediocre defense actually a very good one. If the D-Line can do their job and free up the linebackers, while also pressuring QBs to take pressure off of the secondary, then the Bears could actually have a dominant defense again.

Here's to the start of a new year...we all hope our teams can kick some ass!  [beer]

Bradford and Sugh better enjoy it because they're the last rookies to get big contracts.  It makes absolutely no sense to me that these guys are making more than Brees and Manning.  The NFL is so messed up.  Enjoy this year guys because they'll be a lock-out next year. I think it sucks but it will end up making the NFL better long-term.

Seneca Wallace delivered in the preseason game against Green Bay tonight. He had 3 series and made 2 TD passes. His QB rating was 120. BUT it's just preseason and he's playing for cleveland, so there's plenty of time for him to blow it.

The Browns have made a habit of drafting a top QB, hyping him as the next franchise QB (which they have not had since 1985-1993) and then watching them wash up. Tim Couch was the same thing as Brady Quinn, and as Colt McCoy will be.

Browns STARTING QBs since 1999 -- Detmer, Couch, Pederson, Holcolm, Garcia, Dilfer, Frye, Anderson, Quinn, Delhomme. (they also had Wynn, McCown, Dorsey, Gradkowski start due to injuries).

Post by: DoubleEagle on August 15, 2010, 11:43:18 PM
The Browns looked pretty good against the Packers 1st string but mainly on Offense.

The Browns did win the game 27-24.

The Brown's Offensive line looks better.

Delhomme looked sharp, Wallace looked real good at QB for Cleveland.

McCoy didn't do too well in the throwing dept. , he was blitzed a lot although he did pickup 2-3rd downs w, 2-15 yrd. scrambles.

He went out of the game after he hurt his hand when he hit a players Helmet as he released the ball.

Robiskie dropped a couple of passes he should have caught early but then made just a spectacular corner of the end zone catch getting both feet down as he went out on his head.

Bruce on " All Bets Are Off " said that Mike Holmgren, the Brown's new President, always likes to draft a QB each year.

If nothing else McCoy will be good to trade in the future for some needed players .

IF Seattle could have gotten a really solid third string QB and allowed Wallace to play more options, they would have never let him go. Holmgren had big plans for that guy.

I went to school w/ Charlie Frye at U of Akron and hoped he might be that backup QB the seahawks needed. No such luck.

Watched some preseason 49ers vs Minnesota Favres. Best part: watching Favre get sacked. Favre reaction shots may have had as much air time as the actual game. Jeez am I tired of that dude.

Predictions:
Brady gets his groove back this year - Pats beat Denver in AFC matchup and win it all against Arizona. This is after Lienart loses the starting job to rookie Max Hall.
Raiders come oh so close to .500. Al Davis continues to morph into Montgomery Burns.
Ravens make the playoffs.
Cowboys lose playoff berth due to Romo hang nail issue aquired during Cabo boating incident with a Cardashian, maybe two Cardashians.
SF makes the playoffs.
Terrell Owens - sorry, couldn't type I was laughing too much. Then I dropped my keyboard.
Ocho Cinco wins Inaugural Twitter Tweet of the Year award.
Minnesota loses to Packers and Bears at each matchup, despite Chicago using 4th string quarterback, punter Kickya Bootee.
Jets can't handle running game of Baltimore, lose first round of AFC playoffs.
Favre throws for more interceptions than touchdowns on the year. When training camp looms in 2012, says he is on the fence for the new season. Then he falls off the fence and is run over in a freak John Deere accident. Severely injured, he retires from football. A tearful John Madden lobbies the NFL to make him a Hall of Fame candidate after only 6 months of retirement. Request denied, while rushing to Favre's side, Madden is killed when a plane flies into his bus. Several  deep fried turduckens and some grilled tri-tip in a light Mesquite sauce are recovered from the scene. Favre then comes back to sign with Cleveland in 2013 and leads them to .500. He wins the Blanda award, but no one is really sure what that is, just that it's old.

Also:
Matt Spies: MotoGP champion in 2012, but Rossi sells more Ducati t-shirts than Yamaha, the Dallas Cowboys, and Slipknot combined.

Scary, huh? I know, it's like I've got a Crystal Ball.

Oh, I can answer this. Because a great deal of what he has done in his career has been done at the expense of my Chicago Bears.

Sure, he's a great quarterback. Sure, he's Hall of Fame bound. I still want to see him planted in the turf like a tree on Arbor Day in a prison yard.

;D

...and FWIW Kop, Favre hasn't done all that great against the Bears in the last few years. Finally.

"No player of Favre's generation continually dominated the Bears as commandingly as Brett did."

"To take the dominance of No. 4 even further, it is hard to think of any athlete that has punished any professional team in Chicago like Favre did."

"Though the team has had some success against the future Hall-of-Famer since Lovie Smith came in as head coach, Brett Favre recorded the most wins against the Bears of any quarterback in the teams storied history."

I was never convince that Tebow's playing would translate very well to the NFL. I'm still on the fence considering that he really hasn't faced a real #1 defense.
Title: Re: The NFL Thread
Post by: metallimonster on August 31, 2010, 05:57:05 AM
To me, Tebow is a hard one to figure out.  He's definitely a baller and a great leader but he just didn't throw it that much in college.  I think that he has tremendous upside and if he works hard (we know he will) I think he can become a really good NFL QB.  He's got to be better than Leinart, Russel, etc.

He threw it plenty in college. That's why we know that he's historically an inaccurate passer with a low and slow delivery. By inaccurate, I mean that seldom was the ball delivered into tight coverage or where a reciever could take it in stride in Tebow's college career. I can understand making a project out of the guy. I'm just not sure why one burns a 1st round pick on a project.
Oh well, if he fails, maybe we get to see him cry like he did against Bama in the SEC championship game  [evil]
Title: Re: The NFL Thread
Post by: duccarlos on August 31, 2010, 09:17:31 AM
he can't be worse than Russel. Leinart is a good QB. Look at his stats from this past weekend's game. 9 for 10 with a passer rating of 135? His issue is his arm strength. The cardinals want a QB that can through it up for Fitzgerald. I would put Leinart to run a west coast offense where the deep ball is not as important.

Tebow was pretty much a running back that could occasionally through the ball. What made him such a good QB in college and will most likely kill him in the NFL was that the linebackers could just not fall back into coverage and when they did, he would simply run the ball. Beyond the fact that if he runs in the NFL, they will remove his head, the secondary is much better and the linebackers are much faster. If he studies the game as Peyton and becomes a cerebral QB, then he might do well.

it also shows that he attempted far less passes than Peyton and what it doesn't show is how many times he would run vs. pass. 99% of the time Peyton would throw it if he went back to pass.

Watching Kolb this week and Vick a couple weeks ago, I see why.

Who Dat, got beat by the Cleveland Browns.  :D
The Browns actually looked like a NFL team.... both offense and defense were impressive.

Offense -no turn overs, Defense- 4 turnovers.

Colt McCoy starting in only his 2nd game in his rookie 1st year.

Stats otherwise favored the Saints but not the score.

I give them the chance to break even since you never know if the backup will come in and win them the last 4 games. It will take them a while to get usedto not having Romo, but they do have talent. They need to run the ball and the defense needs to wake up.

I don't know man, they're 3-7 for a reason. The Raiders hung 59 on them...59! Their defense is pathetic...which makes San Diego look good.

Kyle Orton sucks. His numbers are decent this year, but put a little pressure on him and he's done. He sucked it up in Chicago as well...although he is defintely playing better for Denver.

So anyone have thoughts on Andre Johnson not getting suspended?  If that happens in game one he gets at least a game suspension.  To me the "competitive advantage" theory is bullshit.  The only reason he didn't get suspended is because he was going to be on the NFL network's Thursday game.

The NFL needs to get their shit together.  The owners are delusional.  The league keeps handing out fines to "keep the players safe" but wants to add two games.  Tell that doesn't mean more hurt players.

They think they are too big to fail but a lockout will hurt them.  Just ask the baseball owners.
Title: Re: The NFL Thread

Andre didn't get suspended because he's a thug from the "U". They be afraid of him.

Post by: metallimonster on December 03, 2010, 12:49:02 PM
Never thought of that Carlos, you're probably right!

Weird thing is, he's not a bad guy. I would say he and Roddy White are the least "diva" out of all the good WR's.

It just doesn't make sense to me that he can throw repeated blows to the back of the head (something he would DQ'd for in MMA/Boxing) and not get suspended.  Yeah maybe Finnegan deserved it but oh well.

Here's to hoping Delhomme throws less than 3 picks this week.
Title: Re: The NFL Thread
Post by: duccarlos on December 03, 2010, 01:28:09 PM
Andre was considered humble when he played at the U. I guess Finnegan got under his skin somehow. He should have been suspended.
Title: Re: The NFL Thread
Post by: superjohn on December 03, 2010, 01:37:36 PM
Finnegan has been fined 3 or 4 times already. He apparently doesn't care and should be suspended. I just find the arbitrary fine amounts absurd. Beating the crap out of each other apparently isn't as bad as wearing sparkly shoes in the NFL's eyes.

+1.  Also, the Jets seem to get away with more crap than any other team.  As proof, in this game alone:
1) Fair catch interference was NOT called despite the Jets' gunner running into the Fin's return man prior to the arrival of the ball.
2) Edwards basically tried to pull down the Dolphin's DB from behind to prevent him from making the INT- no call.
3) The pathetic makesthebeastwithtwobacksing Jets staffer who intentionally stuck his knee out to trip the Dolphin's gunner on a punt late in the game.  - no call.  That guy should be fired and the Jets need to be fined.  That type of sh*t doesn't have a place in the NFL.  He could have caused catastrophic injury with that dirty shot.

As a Bears fan that game was tough to watch.  :'( The Pats are unstoppable right now...and Brady is hands down the best QB in the league. I don't think anyone else is even close (including your buddy Vick). They haven't just beaten good defenses this year...they've spanked them...with severly undersized receivers.

Cutler...wtf...you play for the Bears, not the Pats.  [roll]

Yeah Tom is the number 1 rated QB in the league. Michael is number 2. Brady and the Pats are on fire. For those keeping
score at home, in the past 2 games the Pats have outscored their opponent's 81 to 10.  :o

Also their defense has stepped up to the plate big time.  [thumbsup]

Da Bears!  ;D

Some horrible calls in that game...Favre not fumbling because he was supposedly in the grasp  [roll]...any other QB in the league and that would have been a fumble (maybe Manning and Brady would have gotten the call as well). Cutler's helmet to the chin no-call. The bogus PI call that led to the Vikings second touchdown. The crap holding call on Kreutz that tool away a Bears touchdown.

Oh well...40-14 isn't bad.  ;D Hopefully the good Cutler shows up at playoff time.

...and Hester.  [bow_down] Set the record in only 5 seasons!

Terrible game from Vick...he should have been picked off 3 more times if the Vikings DBs had any hands. Oh well though, it's just one game and I'm sure he'll bounce back in the playoffs. Hell, even Brees has 21 or 22 INTs this year.

Good showing by Webb  [thumbsup] ...Bears fans would like to thank the Vikes for finally stepping up and winning a game...just in time to give the Bears a 1st round bye!  ;D ;D

I'm really looking forward to the playoffs this year.  Seems like no team really is that much better like in recent years.

Bears, Saint, Falcons, and Eagles all have a shot at making it in the NFC.

Pats look really good but you can never count out Gomer and Big Ben and the Ravens are looking strong too.

Jets could beat the Pats if they can run the ball and keep Brady on the sidelines.

A Bears-Packers NFC title game should be fantastic.  [thumbsup] Those games are almost always good even whem one of the teams suck.

As a long time Bears fan, the Pack worries me...but I think (or hope) they can pull it off.

I was also glad to see the Pats lose. Not because I don't like them, but because I didn't want the Bears to have to face them in the SB. I think the Bears can beat the Steelers or the Jets...although both would be tough.

I'm gonna say Bears - Steelers in the Superbowl. Bears win, 24-17  ;D

A Bears-Packers NFC title game should be fantastic.  [thumbsup] Those games are almost always good even whem one of the teams suck.

Well unless you were alive in 1941 you've never seen it.

2-2

Next week:

Jets, if Rex Ryan can find someone for his team to hate ("When I was in Pittsburgh in '83, the hotdog man didn't give me exact change. It's personal")
GB looks like they can just about destroy anyone, so I'm going with them.

Bears - Packers   There will be blood   [bang] [bang]

Might be the best game of the year and it certainly will be the hardest played.

Playing at home in Soldiers Field will be a big advantage for the home team.

Hester, Pepper, and Urlacher will play big and if Cutler keeps the mistakes to a minimum, dah Bears move on.

Bears defense played well...didn't look good early, but holding GB offense to 14 is good. Plus, they were out on the field A LOT.

Cutler sucked. I'm a Bears fan and I just can't get behind that asshat...and I've tried. Sure, his O-line was lacking in the 1st half...but it looked to me like he quit on the team. Pulled himself out...no knee brace, no ice pack, sulking on the bench then later walking on the sideline. Seems to me if you can walk then you can play in the friggin' NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME! WTF. Hell, Favre played with a broken ankle! It'll be interesting to see what his injury is...

Congrats to the Pack. I still hate them though.

The Steelers really didn't get much pub during the post season. All the talk seemed to be about the Colts, Patriots, and Jets. Good job Steelers!

That being said, I'll still go with the Pack attack for the big game.

Speaking of..did you all notice Christina's less-than-stellar performance?

I thought that it sounded strange.  We'll that's because she left out a line.

Don't worry though..Deion Sanders has come to her defense with this little nugget..

Y'all leave Christina alone i was just informed that was the remix. The nfl was running behind so she was sweet enough to help us out.

Deion Sanders

The NFL was behind so she shortened the Star Spangled Banner, eh?!  [roll]

Boring from DFW, TX! This is why I always go for rides when the Cowboys play and the weather is nice. Takes a bunch of yahoos off the road. Is it just me or was that the worst half time show ever? BEP's kinda suck and the Slash and Usher thing redefined limp dick. Yuck. Can't wait for WSBK and MotoGP to start and knock this nasty taste out of my mouth. Ugh... :P Goodbye NFL season at last!!! I kept waiting for Axl Rose to jump out.....all we got was usher with his canned hip hop moves and no costume malfunctions.  Vanilla.

The game did not disappoint!
