Title: No more 2 strokes
Post by: DarkMonster620 on August 14, 2010, 01:43:50 PM
The Grand Prix Commission, in a meeting held on August 14 in Brno (Czech Republic), unanimously decided on a number of issues, ... "from 2012 the 125cc class will be replaced by Moto3, this has been approved in principle by all the members. The MSMA gave a majority approval and the rest of the members – the FIM, IRTA, and Dorna – have all approved. The basic concept is a 250cc, 4-stroke, one-cylinder engine with a maximum bore of 81mm. The aim is to make this category more competitive and cheaper. Our idea now is to make it a multi-engine category and not a single-engine class. Many things are still to be discussed but it is to be implemented for the 2012 season."

81 is the number...

Yes, it wasn't broke and I will also miss the very distinctive sound from 2 strokes, at least I can purchase a Suzuki AX100 2 Stroke for less than $1K...

Good riddance.

Where were you guys when they stopped making two strokes for the US market?

Also, I am bitter. And if I can't have a two stroke, nobody can  [evil]

what I love is that the engines are to be less than 10K euro's and yet have to last 3 races....

so...do they want these guys to ride a rolling grenade or what?...

no, they don't.. hence "have to last 3 races".

It was only a matter of time -- so many countries have banned 2 strokes for road that the market is just not there.  I don't think anything over 50cc is legal in the US anywhere, and California even that is gone.

Enjoy them while you can...

There is a Mito 125 for sale on CL in S Carolina if anyone wants.. Looks very fun....

Dunno and Dunno. I may pop in there in the next few days though, and I'll ask.

Moto2 gave me the motivation to get my own 2 stroke.  A 1975 550 Suzuki needing some TLC.  I just got the crank back today from Bill Bune up in MN.  Freshly rebuilt, this 2 stroke will be on the road for years.   Thanks Moto2!
