Title: After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike? Post by: Cher on August 22, 2010, 04:59:43 AM As many of you know, I've been on the hunt for a good after-market exhaust for my 2004 "base" model 999. There are of course a bazillion manufacturers who make exhausts for the early generation 999 (2003 - 2004 bikes) but they also tend to cost a bazillion dollars... So! I've treed a set of used Remus cans that APPEAR to be compatible but I would like to know if anyone can for sure verify that this set will fit my early-gen 999: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DUCATI-999-749-03-REMUS-CARBON-EXHAUST-CANS-MUFFLERS-/300457564087?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DUCATI-999-749-03-REMUS-CARBON-EXHAUST-CANS-MUFFLERS-/300457564087?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories) As always, hugs, kisses and TIA, Cher [evil] Title: Re: After-Market 999 exhaust... Post by: junior varsity on August 22, 2010, 09:57:20 AM I found this picture on ca-cycleworks site of a full system, looks like the cans stick out way past the tail All the 999 exhausts stick out way past the tail on a monoposto model. They appear to fit more appropriately on the Biposto. Its the nature of the seat shape on Mono's. Title: Re: After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike? Title: Re: After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike? Post by: Cher on August 22, 2010, 02:17:42 PM Yep, this lil' Q & A has been awesome; thanks for the replies [thumbsup] I think if my bike had the two-seater subframe, the Remus pipes would look OK. Mine is a single-seat subframe though (which I inconveniently forgot to mention) so any after market pipes would stick out way too far. I guess the OEM solution on the mono is not that bad... Aside from the TOTALLY lame sound [roll] And just for the record from the CA Cycleworks website: ZARD complete exhaust system (they do not make slip-ons): $2,799.00 Leo Vince complete exhuast system (also no slip-ons available): $2,159.00 Staintune slip-ons: $1,199.00 Unfortunately, my bike is worth about 8 grand so I see no point in spending a third of its overall value on an exhaust system that still would need a Power Commander or DP ECU to run properly. Will this fit my bike? Post by: Cher on August 23, 2010, 03:58:29 AM Yeah and the problem only gets more complicated because I LOVE by bike. I don't want to sell it because it does everything else I need it to do extremely well and with style. I've talked to two seperate "car guys" about trying to cut the cat out of the lower mid pipe and both said they could try it but knew I would probably not be happy with the results; getting the pipe to marry up at both ends after a new section of pipe has been spliced-in to an area of critical bends would be next to impossible, plus the pipe would still have to flow well ... Big can of worms neither were too happy to try. Hacking the cat out of the box muffler under the seat is done all the time. That is definitely a job for a dremel and I've looked at doing that myself many times. It's that second catalytic converter stuck down in the mid-pipe that's the killer. Anyway, I'll keep at it on ebay and thanks for the replies! I may just try and find a cheap mid pipe and see if I can dremel a "window" into the area of the cat and remove/grind smooth the interior of the pipe then find a good welder who could put the window back in place. That way the overall length and angels of the mid pipe will not have changed and should go right back in place. That's the theory anyway [laugh] Title: Re: After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike? Post by: junior varsity on August 23, 2010, 05:29:28 AM chew on a Spark full system. Price is much better at only 2k rather than the 3-4k for everybody else's full systems.
http://tinyurl.com/2a49en8 (http://tinyurl.com/2a49en8) With the "leftover" money, you could look into a DP or Microtech or Nemesis ecu. I can get you a DP ecu separately if that's what you end up needing. Title: Re: After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike? Post by: Cher on August 23, 2010, 05:35:31 AM O.K. that is good to know. On a related note; has anyone EVER heard of anyone being pleased with a Power Commander? On any bike. Doesn't have to be a Duc. From what I can tell, nobody is ever 100% glad they went the PC route; never quite lived up to expectations or it wasn't enough to make a modded bike run 100% properly. There's plenty of reputable shops around here that specialize in Power Commander tuning but it seems the results from using one are mixed, at best... Title: Re: After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike? Post by: muskrat on August 23, 2010, 05:51:35 AM Absolutely no complaints on both version 3 and 5. Love them both
Title: Re: After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike? Post by: junior varsity on August 23, 2010, 05:55:05 AM with a dp/microtech/nemesis, you'll have one computer doing the job of controlling fueling, etc. Just like the system was designed for.
with a power commander, you'll have two computers trying to work together doing the job of controlling fueling, etc, where a single computer used to control the system. therein seems to lie the problem on getting things "perfect". A friend back home in Nashville has not been satisfied with the setup/maps for his RC51 after lots of tinkering. of note, a guy came in the shop the other day asking about bazzaz. Unfortunately not available for the 999, it will be interesting to see if it can work better than the PC as a less expensive tuning alternative. Title: Re: After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike? Post by: ♣ McKraut ♣ on August 23, 2010, 07:41:57 AM I have PCIIIs on both my 750 and 1000 GSXRs and on my old 'Busa. Steve Upchurch programed the 750 and 'Busa and Randy McCarter downloaded one for the 1000. All work(ed) perfectly. Zero problems. I also have a Dan Kyle tuned PCIII on the Hayden Rep RC51 with Sato exhaust... also works perfectly. I have a PCV for the new 'Busa but it's not installed/tuned yet. Friends at Action Kawi/Suzi have steered me toward a PC/dyno genius at North Dallas Honda/Suzuki on the I-35 service road but I can't remember the dude's name. When I get around to having it done I'll get his name from Action. Don't know anyone who has one on a Ducati. Maybe PC doesn't speak Italian? [laugh] when i put a pc3 on an s2r800 several years back i took it to honda/suzuki north initially for a tune, since they were a certified shop. picked it up and it ran like crap...wouldn't even idle, and popped worse than when i brought it to them. i took it back, and they basically told me tough shit, they had tuned it properly and that was that. after a bunch of back and forth arguing i was able to get some of my money back for the tuning, but it was a crappy experience. not sure if it's most of the same staff there now; maybe the service crew now is better with PC3s. i do know that after taking it to them, i then took it to jim sabin, and he treated me right and got it all sorted out for me; very cool guy. Title: Re: After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike? Post by: muskrat on August 23, 2010, 11:28:34 AM if you go the PC route Lisa I got the right guy.......unbelievable experience and he's NEVER, I mean NEVER failed me through all my bikes. He's honest and makes it right.

Title: Re: After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike? Post by: Cher on August 23, 2010, 12:04:27 PM I'm 99% sure the Guzzi had inconsistent voltage delivery; sometimes 13's other times MAYBE 14.2 but not for long. No ECU could work well in that environment. Eventually, all things electrical were replaced and I just gave up on the beast. Life's too short. Which brings me back to my favorite bike in the world; my banana yellow, stickered-up, go-fast 999... that just sounds kinda lame [laugh] Title: Re: After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike? Title: Re: After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike? Post by: Ronr on August 23, 2010, 04:38:15 PM I had a Dan Kyle-tuned PC III on my 1098 and loved it. It was good all over, and never had any problems with the setup. Is a single computer setup optimal? Probably. But if you have a good map on a PC III, you should be good to go.
I assume the 999 is like the 1098, in that the PC III is only effective above a certain RPM threshold, like 5k or so. So you'd still probably need the "race" ECU, and the PC would just be for fine tuning. Title: Re: After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike? Title: Re: After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike? Post by: junior varsity on August 23, 2010, 06:07:16 PM I kind of agree. I mean, then at least you have it while you figure out how you want it tuned, etc.
