On the way to class today, bike was warm running as usual. I pulled up to a stop sign went to drop into first and the shifter went to the floor and stayed there. I killed the bike and hopped off. Tried to roll but stuck in gear. Clutched it and rolls fine so clutch appears to be working properly.
Started bike back up and I can hear sort of a whining. It is a new sound and not something that was there previously.
Tried to man-handle the shifter back to neutral but it will not budge at all. Pushed the bike back to the house down the road and headed back to class in the car.
I have not had a chance to check anything yet but I can tell you in the 10 minutes I spent troubleshooting there appears to be quick fix.
I am second owner and bike was purchased dec of 08 so 2yr warranty is still in effect.
Please help!
search tech.. i think i remember another person having a similar problem.
Sounds like the shifter drum over rotated.
It could be a broken spring or just an adjustment.
...and yes there are several threads and pics on the forum.

Grazi
Had the same problem. Pulled the cover on that side of the engine. The mounting for the shifter arm is slotted allowing adjustment. It was installed too "tight" from the factory so when it wore a slight amount, it got stuck in the down position. I re-adjusted it, installed the cover, re-filled with oil. Been fine for 4000 miles.

Shit, it sounds super simple.... unfortunately I'm back at school and my garage and tools are hours away. Hopefully under warranty I'll be able to get roadside assistance and have it taken to a dealer. Nearest one is an hour away.
I had the exact same issue with mine, at mile 26!! I downshifted into 1st came to a stop, started off to merge onto a 4 lane highway, went to shift into 2nd...nope, stuck! Got it back to the dealership, and long story short there was a faulty detent spring, and apparently it allowed the shift linkage to travel past the stop and get stuck. I'd start with that. [thumbsup]
I hate having bike issues on the way to class...sits on your mind all day.

^ yep, Could not focus one bit. Bike was picked up today and taken to the dealer. I have not heard anything from then yet.
Well good luck. Let us know what the deal is
Update on the bike. This is a crazy story....
Bike was at dealer for 2 weeks before it was looked at.
tech opens up the side case and says no springs were broken but an adjustment needs to be made which was causing the shifter to travel beyond the stops and get locked in position. Dealer fixes the bike and tells me there is a parts kit from ducati that permanently fixes this issue. He then tells me it will take 2 weeks to get here but gives me the bike for the mean time saying "it will probably never happen again but lets install the kit just in case"
So we order the kit and I ride the bike home. A nice 50 minutes on the highway (I81S) and I'm back at my apt.
Bike sits for one day until Sunday when I hop on to go for a nice ride. About 1.5 miles from my apt. the bike breaks again in the exact same fasion. Shifter locked completely down, unable to budge it. This time it's in neutral so I can't limp it home..... I would push it but it's all uphill...
So now my bike is sitting in a public parking lot at the end of the college party street. 2 years ago I watched a drunk guy kick a gsxr600 over to look "tough" in the very same spot. I'm sitting here shitting myself waiting for the bike to get stolen or vandalized.
Called the dealer to arrange ANOTHER pickup at 12pm today. Never called me back.... no telling when they will come get it . My guess is wednesday.
This has been one amazingly huge headache. I have had the duc for <6 months and it has broken twice....
Needless to say my friend on his ZX6r has never had an issue in 4 years.... WTF
Figured this was worth another post....
Sunday after the bike breaks down I get a lift from a stranger back to my apt. so I can take the cage.... LO AND BEHOLD someone SLASHED both of my rear tires..... $200 later I have a car again and no bike still...
I really have the worst luck known to man...It's a fact.
Sorry to hear about your troubles! I was at the dealer yesterday and heard them talking about picking a bike up from Ship again; I figured it must be yours. I had the shift kit installed on my bike under warranty. In typical Ducati fashion it took a few weeks for the parts to come in. Granted, my bike wasn't having the same issue as yours; I was getting false neutrals.
That's pretty funny they were talking about it... They probably hate me for having to tow it a second time.
Lets hope I get it back in less than 2 weeks. I have now been without a bike for 3 weeks and it really sucks. I am missing out on the best weather of the year.
Hmm... If karma has been kicking your ass this bad perhaps you should play the lotto. It has to balance out eventually :)

Nah, I think they were just arranging the tow or something.

I feel ya. Your bike can hang out with my bike. It's been sitting there waiting for parts from my wife's little mishap for 3+ weeks. I think the rest of the parts will be in this week, so hopefully I'll be back on the road early next week.

Haha, I'm sure they are keeping each other company..
Do you know if they store service bikes indoors? When I got my cover back from them it had bird crap on it.

Yeah, they do.
Today I had the same problem. Trans stuck in second gear. It was raining.. so after the trans. stuck i pulled over and waited the rain. I was already calling Ducati but since my 696 have no longer assistance road I just waited the rain. After 20 minutes i checked the pedal and magically was fine! I presume that the bike overheated even though the temp. was normal and the pedal stuck down.
Well, im happy that I came back home safely and with the bike riding fine but I will change the oil and filter anyway.
Weird that it worked after a few minutes. I was not so lucky. Got the bike back today and it has been running GREAT> so far no more shifting issues.
After a "recall kit" was installed to correct the over-travel issue of the shifter and everything was adjusted my bike no longer jumps when dropping into first. It is also more quiet when shifting.
Hopefully this problem is solved.
My wife got a shift kit installed on her M796 and I thought this problem is unique to that particular model (it was difficult to shift gears and at times the neutral lap didn't work in the cockpit although shift was in neutral). Now, the kit fixed it all. Do all new monster models have the same problem? I am happy with the shifting on my M1100 - do I need to get an update installed as it is still under warranty?

From what the dealer told me this is much more common on older monsters. He had never seen this on a 696, though it was a small dealer.
To be honest I would probably call your dealer and ask them to install the kit. It takes 45 minutes to do once the parts come in from Italy. I asked if the rider can contribute to the problem and was told definitely not, it just "happens."
I find it difficult to understand why Ducati has had the same problem with their bike for years and never created a permanent solution.

Bro, Is the shift kit free (kind of recall) or you paid for it? If yes, how much?
Thanks

Bro... hha
Yes it is free and covered under warranty. The question is will they do the warranty install of the kit if no problem is present? That may be your issue.
Specifically, what is in this 'recall kit'?

You know, I looked up the recalls for my bike and this issue was not one of them. The dealer used the word "recall" to describe it as well as "just a parts kit."
He kept saying something about the shifter rotating too far downward past the "stops" and getting stuck. Somehow this kit prevented that. The install of the kit tok <45 minutes and I never got to see the parts. The whole thing seemed a bit off.
This is exactly what my receipt says with product numbers and descriptions (in italian)

Does this mean that as a recall it can be done w/out having the issue present as a precaution?
[thumbsdown] <- I just wanted to use this.

googled that recall and it came up with a recall relating to an electrical fault

If they billed the labor to that recall I hope they did the repair associated with that recall as well so you don't have a problem getting the recall specific repair in the future.
Any wayto find out which models they started putting the revised parts on?

Not that I know of. Maybe call your local shop, they can look up your vin and check bike specific bulletins.
