Title: Anyone add fairings to a Monster? Post by: bunnyman666 on September 20, 2010, 03:42:50 PM I am not talking a full-on set of race fairings. I am talking more like a larger nose fairing or even an upper fairing.
Part of me wants to use the nose section of a later SS. Airtech makes one, and it's a pretty cool piece. I am also thinking in the direction of something like a Aprilia Tuono or something like that. I have a Thruxton fairing, and I want it to switch back to when I want to switch it up. I don't want to do the typical plastic streetfighter fairing/headlight, as I am getting bored with those, as well. I just want to further separate my Monster from everyone else's. Title: Re: Anyone add fairings to a Monster? Post by: xcaptainxbloodx on September 20, 2010, 03:52:28 PM ive heard of people getting sport 1000 half fairings to work but ive never seen it.
anything can fit if you put enough time or money (or both) into it. If you have something definite that you like, try and find one then see what it would take to mount it. you will need to weld on tabs to mount the fairing as well as the forward mount/stays. nothing beyond a windscreen (like the thruxton one you already have) is gonna bolt right up. He might have some pointers
Title: Re: Anyone add fairings to a Monster? Post by: muskrat on September 20, 2010, 05:25:38 PM Duc Cutters website had some at one point but I can't find them. Send them an email but they had several previously.
Title: Re: Anyone add fairings to a Monster? Post by: Raux on September 20, 2010, 06:38:46 PM the way the fairings mount you will either have to weld onto the head tube a mount (permanent) or create a bracket custom (removeable)

Newbs ;) Yes, several Monster owners have. Do a search for Monster Challenges (especially in Europe) over the past several years. A lot of different looks out there. I wonder of a more angular fairing will work better... Title: Re: Anyone add fairings to a Monster? Post by: Raux on September 21, 2010, 08:30:07 AM Do you mean like this?

Post by: M900 on September 21, 2010, 09:21:00 AM Generally speaking, I like the cafe-type fairing bette, but I prefer yours for the Monster. If you can make the bottom edge of the fairing parallel with the upper edge of the knee indent in the tank, it will flow better, but that might be too much trouble for what its worth.

Post by: bunnyman666 on September 22, 2010, 01:12:17 AM Okay- so the answer is yes.
On the Duc Cutters website, I saw a Monster to Superbike conversion. Not exactly what I had in mind, but interesting concept, none the less. A Sport Classic fairing would probably be ideal for a more retro faired look, as it's lines look like they would complement the angular, yet softly curved tank of the Monster. I have to say, comparing my SS tank and the Monster tank, the SS tank looks almost like a loaf of bread in spots, whereas the Monster tank is just a great shape. Raux- I like your concept, and it is amongst the contenders for where I am going with mine. Motomonster- I almost bought one of those fairings (Bultaco Metralla), but instead got the Thruxton that is currently on my bike. It looks a lot similar to one somebody is selling, and it's shown on a SV650. www.caferace.com (http://) has this piece, and they say (oddly enough) that it's based on an old 750SS. Thanks for the neat pics!!! I guess I am not looking hard enough at search results, nor am I typing in the correct phrases. Title: Re: Anyone add fairings to a Monster? What kind of work did you do to mount it? Would you mind terribly giving me a few hints? Who sells 999 bodywork? Title: Re: Anyone add fairings to a Monster? Would you mind terribly giving me a few hints? Who sells 999 bodywork? its actually not hard; welded tabs onto frame made a front clamp to hold a vortex999 fairing bracket the tail is a 00-02 R6 piece and the bodywork was bought from yoyodyne. which is the best fitting race bodywork i've ever bought. the only problem is that the bottom flops a little at speed so its saftywired to the pipes and burnt through in a few spots. luckly belly pans are cheep. fwiw that bike will have the CRA #7 on it next season. [bacon] Title: Re: Anyone add fairings to a Monster? Post by: muffinman on September 29, 2010, 06:50:21 AM That looks amazing... so you took the Vortex 999 fairing bracket, and then purchased a set of Ducati 999 fairings and slapped it on? Outside of welding on the tabs for the Vortex 999 fairing bracket, did you need any other modifications?
Thanks.. your bikes (and your racing team) are an inspiration on what can be done on our little Monsters Title: Re: Anyone add fairings to a Monster? Post by: atomic410 on September 29, 2010, 10:16:35 AM it requires a little fairing cutting so that the bars can turn and the gages can fit under the screen and some simple mocking up for wheel clearence its all in all pretty easy. i will say that the fairing adaptor bracket is the most tech thing because you need it machined so that it clamps around the headtube then a tab is welded to the clamp so the fairing bracket can attach. my teammate did the hard work of welding and clamp faberacation, he's the brains behind the bike, I just ride it[bacon]
Title: Re: Anyone add fairings to a Monster? Post by: muffinman on September 29, 2010, 10:52:52 AM Cool, thanks, now only if those 999 fairings weren't so damn expensive.

[bacon] Tell me more about the R6 seat. DO you use ANY of the stock seat? DId you use the one-piece seat and put foam on that? DO you think I could adapt a road seat for use with the R6 seat? BTW- I LOVE the way the R6 seat looks on your steed!!! Title: Re: Anyone add fairings to a Monster? Post by: atomic410 on October 05, 2010, 12:13:36 PM its just a 02 R6 race tail with the sides cut off and i made a bracket that bends around and screws into the stock monster seat via the cowl screw holes on the bottom. I made some little sides for the front of the tail hump with fiberglass sanded it down and mounted it up. it flopped alittle so i filled it with expanding foam. It holds up well, its been crashed on each side and flipped once. stock monster seat with R6 tail hump no other parts than a little fiberglass and elbow greese. it would work on a street monster because the light still would be in the same spot and there is plenty of clearence for the light under the seat. I think. [bacon]
Title: Re: Anyone add fairings to a Monster? Post by: bunnyman666 on October 06, 2010, 02:14:55 PM I may draw flames here, but the Duc cowl just leaves me a bit cold. I don't hate it, but there's someting I don't quite like about it.
I may end up doing a different tail light with this tail. But I am thinking at least the exhaust won't make the seat look so stumpy if I used this tail... Title: Re: Anyone add fairings to a Monster?
