Title: Mono (kissing sickness)
Post by: erkishhorde on November 11, 2010, 11:21:10 AM
I'm about to head back up to SLO for a meeting with my adviser and I'm planning on staying w/ my old housemate. Thing is, she's got mono this time. Anything I should be careful of? I have no intention of swapping spit with her and I'm not sure how I would do it unintentionally and get myself sick on accident. Can you get mono if the contaminated person coughs on their hand and opens a door and then you touch the handle and wipe your eyes? The new guy that took my room hasn't gotten sick yet and the girl's been sick for nearly a month now and just had a relapse so I'm not terribly worried. It's just that the couch I sleep on is the same couch that she likes the huddle up on and watch TV when she's not feeling well.

So, she's been sick for a *month*, and just had a relapse.

You're giving the idea of staying in that house serious consideration...why?

Iono, I thought it was hard to catch mono. I obviously don't know much about it. The relapse is because she keeps going to classes instead of staying home and resting.

just be sure that when she licks you that you don't accidentally lick in the same spot.

have you ever had mono?

it is not worth it. Stay somewhere else....a tent would be better. Its so much worse than you would even imagine.

Mono is terrible. A mild/moderate fever and EXTREME tiredness that lasts for WEEKS.

It just drags on forever and you want to eat a bullet after a while.

Still, if you're going to do it, do it right and get sticky.  [thumbsup]

From webmd-
QuoteMono can be spread through contact with saliva, mucus from the nose and throat, and sometimes tears. Because the virus can be spread through kissing, it has earned the nickname the "kissing disease." If you have mono, you can avoid passing the virus to others by not kissing anyone and by not sharing things like drinking glasses, eating utensils, or toothbrushes.

so not airborne
but this sounds rough-
Quotea common viral illness that can leave you feeling tired and weak for weeks or months.

I had mono in college...  It SUCKED!

I slept all day, got up at 5pm, ate, went back to sleep u 'til about 3am, up for an hour, then back to sleep.  For someone as hyper as me, it was torture not being able to have the energy to do anything.  Somehow, though, I managed to get laid... I guess I didn't have the energy to say no...   ;)

Seems pretty hard to get rid of it also.

Wait... did they know you had mono?  Maybe they were tying to get a pass on grades for the semester.

Yes, they did.  For the one hour I was awake at 3am I wandered the hall in my (co-ed) dorm.  Their door was open.  I said hi.  They invited me in, asked how I was feeling, etc... Small talk about how mono sucks, wish I felt better, blah blah.  They gave each other a look, said they wanted to help me feel better. (cheesy lines rule)   I wasn't really gonna say no, was I?

I lost 45lbs over a three week period with mono.
Avg'ed 21 hours a sleep a day. Barley had the energy to get up to use the bathroom or shower.

If you want to know what it feels like to be dead, get mono.

I think you have to be double-jointed to do auto-fellatio...or at least be in a car   ;D

who said anything about fellatio?  dirty person.

she might lick you about the anus.  much easier to reach than attempting to overcome the animus of fellating oneself.

My 13 year old step son got mono right before the end of school this last May. Too bad it wasn't from kissing all the girls in school!! [laugh] We have no idea how he got it. Apparently it tends to hit teenagers more than adults. An adult getting it is fairly rare according to his pediatrician. By the time we hit adulthood we have developed most of the immunities to keep from contracting it. You can be exposed by drinking out of the same glass or water bottle, which seems the most likely way my step son got it. And you can actually have it and show no signs and still give it to others. It takes weeks to actually show the symptoms so there is no telling who he drank after 4-6 weeks previous.

It did wear his ass out. He's a Boy Scout and went to the 100th anniversary Jamboree in the DC area so we had to keep him indoors and inactive for the weeks preceding Jamboree to make sure he could attend. Once you have it and get over it you can easily have a relapse by over doing it and stressing your immune system out. Saved his ass from doing any yard work in the heat of the summer, lucky stiff!!! [laugh]

I asked everyone's opinion the morning I was heading up. Got there, evaluated the situation myself before reading everyone's posts and decided it would be adequate risk.
