"know your back drop"

It's Alaska!  There's nothing or no one in the horizon for miles except for Russia.

(sorry Mitt, I couldn't resist!)   ;D  If my response is over the line or too tempting for others let me know and I'll remove it.

True.  How about "know your gun" and the five misses she let go?

If you need more than 3 with that style of rifle, then you need to find another job.

it's easy to miss standing like that. if she really wanted to hit it she should take a knee and properly support the weight of the rifle.

It's a tough shot for someone that is out of practice. I'm surprise it didn't bolt after the first shot.

...and why can't she operate the bolt herself?  ???

My M1A1 did someting simular to me.
The scope mount was moving during recoil, not every time, just often enough to drive you nuts.
We finally covered a 4' sq pallet with white butcher paper, stapled 1 target to it, and set it out at 100 yds.
Lloyd spotted for me with a 50x spotting scope.
3 shots nice group......make adjustment.....3 shots.....and then out of the blue 2 ft high and 1 ft right.....WTF
After cleaning the appropiate area with brake clean and appling a liberal dose of red locktite, the problem went away.

So my wild ass quess is during transport the scope was damaged. You always assume that a miss is your fault, if the scope is off it will drive you nuts, especially if the rifle in question has been a tack driver in the past.

didn't her Dad shoot the rifle at the camp after they returned swearing it was dead on?  their buddy placed a paper plate and the guy missed as well.  don't know if Sarah can shoot for shit but six total shots by two people and no target hit.  the rifle is off.

At the range between Kenai and Soldotna, we had to cease fire and wait, a small herd of Caribou walked over the berm and slowly walked between 5 of us and our target on the 50yd pistol range.
Caribou do not associate gun fire with danger. People smells are a whole different matter, if you're upwind, they will take of 100's of yards away, as soon as they get the scent.

I have to assume that they know the area and that they know there were no stuctures over the hill, but you can't be sure there wasn't a person on the other side. I don't know, I wasn't there. Maybe they did know.

IIRC it was said that they were north of the arctic circle, if so not much other than miles and miles of miles and miles. An area about the size of the state of California with maybe 30k people.
Google maps..... look ~ 150 miles north of Fairbanks.

nearest neighbor is over 100 miles away.  If there was someone over the ridge they were lost.  ;D
When I went to Prudhoe Bay and surrounding area I couldn't believe the vastness of the place.  Went in winter and summer both times seeing a Polar Bear......scary as hell.

I understand that, but showing it on a national TV show is bad form.  It is text book wrong.  So is taking 6 shots to kill your prey and using a borrowed gun.

And Mutual of Omaha specials along with National Geographic showing lions and crocs slaughtering prey is ok as opposed to this?  I watched the whole episode and it was very tame IMO.

Sometimes people miss, sometimes people borrow rifles, sometimes people get buck fever......what do you want?  At least they were clean misses before the shot that did the job.

I am not opposed to showing killing animals on TV - that isn't my message.  It is my message you should be able to kill what you are shooting at on the first or second shot and use proper hunting technique if you are going to show it to the masses.

I take it a lot of people on here haven't ever taken a hunting class?

The perfect shot doesn't just hit the animal, it hits a spot that results in instant death. That way the animal does not suffer.
A shot that hits but does not instantly kill but instead causes the animal to run off wounded and suffering, is a miss.

Compare to a slaughter house, their "stun guns" are not 100%, and as dumb as cows are they can sense that good things are not happening.

But when you are "clean" missing, you have shown the ability to not have perfect shot, so you are more likely to have a wounding shot, like blowing the animals jaw off or an ass shot.

That is why I don't think there is any such thing as a clean miss.

The first deer I shot, I hit it just above the leg or in the upper part of the leg (not into the chest cavity) It had tried to circle around and behind our group but I had gotten slowed down in a cedar thicket so it ran into me. The shot was only 150' away and the scope was useless, In my inexperience I tried to use it anyway and I had a bit of Buck fever. I must have been about 14 then.

So the deer ran down the hill just about a mile away, we followed the blood trail to some brush it had layed down in. My Uncle killed it (He got there first) That is kind of not the way to do it....

What I found amazing though was that Sarah needed help working the Bolt. I think you should be completely familliar with the rifle before you ever go out hunting for something.

Shit happens.  Variables come in to play.  Sometimes bolts arent as smooth as they could be. It sucks that not every shot is an on/off switch.  Even seasoned hunters with decades of experience miss.  People that take motorcycle classes make mistakes.  Thats how we learn.

I think its cool that she was out there, Im sure contrary to what her "press secretary" recommended.

Couldnt agree more that a Presidential candidate should know how to work a bolt.......and run a company for that matter....and never, ever give an interview in front of a turkey slaughterhouse....

Sarah Palin pardons a Thanksgiving turkey as others die around her. The Political Pop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJd_vm9VhpU#normal)

Its just like watching people on motorcycles.  People that are smooth and comfortable with their bikes opposed to a newer rider that is not comfortable or competent.  Its obvious that these people are trying to portray themselves as experienced shooters and hunters and just as obvious from this performance that they are neither.

Much to their credit, it's obvious that they are not doing a lot of "creative" editing.
What is filmed is what we see, warts and all.
I find the honesty refreshing.  Can you image if Al Gore did a simular program.  [laugh] (100 + hours of film edited down to 42 minutes, kinda of like 'Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom")

I think this thread is going down hill, IBTL. Just because she's a political figure, it does not mean that everything she does should be taken in the political context. I would say that more than 60% of "reality" shows out there have much more moronic personalities at the helm.
