It helps solidify my position that we are becoming such a whiny, sad, weak little species.

How can I give the "Dustbowl" virus to everyone playing Farmville?

If I made a game in which people collect garbage or work in a waste water treatment plant, do you think it would be just as popular?

I don't use it, don't understand it's draw, other than vanity.  Seems that the privacy concerns are moot.  If you are so concerned about privacy, don't use Facebook.  I also don't understand it's business model.  How does Facebook currently bring in revenue?  The 60 MINUTES interviewer said the company was worth about 40 billion.  Where are the earnings?

Companies are always looking for relationships, and facebook has that data.  Me and Jim and 50 thousand both like the Packers, and Briar Creek Beer - maybe we should do a marketing campaign together - etc etc.  Companies are buying that information today, so with 500 million users, it is better than any survey or census you could put together.  Also they can see 2nd and 3rd orders of relationships not just 1st.  I believe the 40b worth, but I don't believe it will be around for 5 years.  Look at MySpace and Friendster...  There is room for improvement.

I will never understand Farmville.

Then again, I look up at the upper left corner of this site and see that I've lost 12 days of my life browsing through these pages, many of which focus on modifications to a perfectly good motorcycle, etc.  Most posts are just are looking for validation, including mine.

It's fun. So I do it.  We should hardly throw stones, eh?

People who only communicate using facebook are equal in my book to the people who REFUSE to talk on the phone.  I only get 200 texts a month people, and even if I DID have unlimited texts I'd rather get a 5 minute phone conversation with you, my friend and possibly loved one, out of the way than spend the next 6 hours wishing I had a better prescription staring at this little make the beast with two backsin screen.  Pick up the phone and call someone!  Write a damn letter!

/Rant

Myspace was ok back in college just because it was an efficient communication device for professors and colleages, but it was just that.  Ok.  In moderation, plus you could go listen to bands and such.  The only thing I find more infuriating than Facebook: is Twitter.

Ok Steve, I got this idea.  Lets take the most irritating, nonsensical, and ultimately USELESS portion of Facebook, and give it it's own site.

Steve: you mean....

Yep!! make the beast with two backsin status updates!  That way, when you have to drop the kids off at the pool, or when you have to drop the kids off at the pool, people can leave comments bantering back and forth to try and figure out whether you meant it literally or fecaly.  The entire world can know what you had for dinner and that you're absolutely exhausted after your hard day at that retail place you work at!!  Who needs pictures that you can share with your friends?  Why would an email-esque communications device be of any worth?  Need to find new music?  Go buy a CD!!  Yep.  It's gonna be huge.

Steve: I don't think.....

HUGE

Ok, now /rant.

I'll admit it - I have a Facebook account. Which rarely is accessed.

Why I set it up originally was to get in contact with an old friend whom I hadn't seen in the better part of 20 years, and had no idea how to contact. Cool. A bunch of old classmates friended later, OK, whatever.

But I never go on there for more than maybe five minutes a month (if that) because I have better things to do than mention that my socks got dirty out in the shop and I don't know how I'll get them clean and really give a shit how someone might suggest I do so. WTF - don't people have real lives and actual things to do??

But the best yet was this week, when I got an e-mail from FB that a college roommate "answered a question about you". Huh?? Question? So I clicked the link.

Apparently you have to accumulate coins or points or some stupid thing somehow to uncover how people answered questions about you and who they are. Things like "do you think he's cute?". Are we in make the beast with two backsing first grade again?? Look, if you want to suck my balls, look me up in the phone book and give me a call.....

I reiterate my comment above.....  [roll]

(and yes, I'm in a hell of a mood today)

I totally agree with this. I have become so jaded towards texting that I have it blocked on my cell phone. It drives me nuts that people have become so far removed from actually interacting with people in the real world. What's even worse is that some people actually perceive the "real world" to be what they find online.

Step away from the text messaging...and log off Facebook!!! It's for your own good!!!

I do a lot of texting. With 2 people only. My one buddy has an international phone in Afghanistan and his limited talk minutes are used with his wife and kids. But he has unlimited texting. My other buddy has been unemployed for a few years now and all they can afford is a really minimal plan with unlimited texting and very few minutes.

And I'd say those are totally justified and understandable as examples go.

i text all day.. i work long hours and usually in peoples houses and moving from job to job i can't really be on the phone.. but it works for me cause i actually don't like talking on phones much..  never did.. I'd rather email or write a letter.. texting is just a smaller form of lettering writting.. so me n the wife will text back n forth some days less then others or with my friends who also can't really be on the phone much..  facebook i have but use as a means of pics and sharing with family that are far.. other then that, i hate all the little games and such on it..

It helps solidify my position that we are becoming such a whiny, sad, weak little species.

I'm a middle school teacher...  Want me to comment on that?

Does your school still issue grades or has it become too upsetting to the students?

My father is an old school, old world, off the boat guy.  He just started leaving messages on our answering machine.  And if he leaves a message it’s got to be important.  He has a cell phone but it’s only for extreme emergencies.  It’s funny to see him and my younger brother together.  My younger brother seems to spend hours on “sit-on-my-facebook”.  I think it’s the only way he communicates with people.  I’ve stopped responding to my brother on “sit-on-my-facebook”.  I told him if he had something to say he could email or call me.  I haven’t heard from him in since before Christmas.

Now there's a novel idea. When was the last time that anyone actually received a hand written letter - more than 1 page, saying more than "thank you for the Christmas present"....more over, when was the last time anyone actually received a hand written "thank you" letter??

I'll admit, I don't do it as often as I feel I should, but ironically I just put a 2 page letter in the mail to my family yesterday...and my hand hurt like hell!!  [cheeky]

I dig facebook. It lets me inundate the grandparents with daily, mundane info about their grandkids.

It lets me check-in on the daily goings on with friends who live around the country, but thanks to having two kids, I don't have the time to call and chat with on a frequent enough basis.

Frankly guys, 12 years ago fellow motorcyclists were asking me "Why do you spend all that time on that internet thing talking about bikes? Why aren't you going to monthly swap meets to find parts like we are? The internet is stupid."

And yet, 12 years later, here we all are.

Now, would I set up the DMF as a facebook group if I were setting it up today? Hell no. Wrong tool for the job.

But as a voyeuristic time-waster that lets you know what folks you don't have time to see in person are up to, it's pretty good at that. It reminds me of the small-town gossip that was a huge time-waster back when I lived in rural VT.

It's not the most high-minded of pursuits, but it's sure as shit better than following celebrity gossip.

And BTW: I still send actual letters to people. Birthday / Holiday cards via email are teh suxxor.

I like it. I use it. I really don't care if others do or don't. I don't post up the random stuff I do all day. I do post up things I'm doing if I want people to join me (and then delete them after). Works really well for that. I don't play the games or shit like that. I'll hang pics on it as it's easier that emailing it to 20 different people. And, they can check whenever the hell they want. The "msg" function is easier than emailing 1/2 the time as it's less likely to have crap attached to it. Their IM function has just about taken the place of AIM, YIM, etc. When it goes video, it'll completely replace it.

I'll leave it open on my home computer if it's on. It's also on my phone. I don't spend a lot of time talking on the phone. So, between that and text messaging. I get what I need without having to deal with the pleasantries and formal stuff when you call. In fact, the only people I call are generally the parents and family or when I need to give real time directions and don't want the delay. I don't answer my phone at the bar or when I'm with people socially unless I'm expecting something. But, I will steal away 5 seconds to send a reply to a text if I get one.

Umm.. not quite. "Woman runs over cousin over guy" - Which prolly happens quite a bit. Only reason she knew was that she found out on FB. And because it's "facebook" it made the news.

I think that's it. The article wasn't about divorce rates going up. It was about evidence farmed from social media sites being used more often in divorce proceedings. It's the same as the idiots who get binned from work for ranting within a few mouse clicks from their employers. Don't put it on the internet if it'll come back to bite you later.
